To run binaural beats on YouTube Live around the clock, send a true stereo audio feed and a visual through an encoder to a YouTube Live Control Room stream. Keep the left and right channels separate, choose settings your computer and upload connection can sustain, and monitor the stream. The main operational catch: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a single 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable full-length archive.
Before you start: channel eligibility and equipment
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. An encoder is the practical route when you want to combine audio with a static or animated visual and leave the feed running. You can use software or hardware encoding; YouTube describes both, but a hardware encoder is not established as necessary for a simple audio stream. Check YouTube’s current live streaming requirements before planning your launch.
You will need a binaural audio source, an encoder, a stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity, and a visual to accompany the audio. If a complete recording matters, also arrange local recording and enough storage for it.
How to create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Choose Go Live, then create or schedule a stream. Add a title and description, choose its privacy setting, and review the available stream options. Scheduling can make a watch page available in advance.
- Copy the connection details. In the Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is compromised, reset it through YouTube’s stream settings. - Configure your encoder. Select the copied server URL and key, add the binaural audio and visual, and set the audio to stereo. Use the conservative settings described below as a starting point, then test the actual feed.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that the Live Control Room receives the feed before you make the stream public. Check both audio channels and listen for silence, clipping, dropouts, and abrupt loop transitions.
How to preserve the binaural effect
Binaural beats are perceived when different tones are presented separately to the two ears; the perceived beat corresponds to the difference between their frequencies. The audio path therefore needs to preserve left/right separation from the source through the encoder to playback. Do not collapse the source to mono. The 2023 review describes headphones as typically used to keep the tones restricted to their intended ears; headphones can also help you check stereo separation while monitoring, but they do not create the tones. Avoid unnecessarily high listening volume.

Check the encoded stream itself, not only the source file: listen to the live watch page and confirm that the left and right parts remain distinct. Stereo preservation here follows from the described binaural mechanism; it is not a claim that a cited study tested YouTube’s entire encoding pipeline.
Encoder settings: audio, video, and bandwidth
YouTube’s published live encoder settings list RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz stereo audio and 128 kbps stereo audio. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular encoder or network will remain stable.

- Audio: Preserve stereo and use a supported audio codec. Check the result in the received stream for channel separation, clipping, silence, and unwanted noise.
- Video: A static visual does not call for a high frame rate for editorial reasons, but the feed must still meet YouTube’s ingest requirements. Select a resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate using the current official table for your codec and encoder.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate and upload capacity: Match the bitrate to the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, and ensure your upload link can sustain it. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; account for the combined bitrate if you send primary and backup streams. See its current bitrate recommendations rather than reusing an unqualified number.
Keep the encoder workload modest enough for the computer to run continuously. Test with the real audio source and visual, including any movement, before relying on the setup.
Test the stream before going live
YouTube advises setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before the planned event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. Allow time to check the received feed and correct issues before the intended start.

- Start the encoder and confirm the Live Control Room preview appears.
- Open the channel’s watch page and verify playback there and on a mobile device.
- Listen for left/right separation, clipping, silence, dropouts, and errors at loop transitions.
- Check stream health and verify that any local recording is being written and its file is growing.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. This is a test procedure, not a guarantee of seamless takeover in every configuration.
YouTube also recommends monitoring stream quality continuously and maintaining a reliable network. The official guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime: power loss, internet outages, encoder failures, and source or loop problems can all interrupt a broadcast. Plan how someone or something will detect a failure and respond.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It cautions that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on a single continuous 24/7 broadcast to produce a complete YouTube archive.

- For a complete recording: Record locally, confirm the file is growing, and plan storage and recording rotation.
- If the YouTube archive matters: Consider shorter scheduled events under 12 hours. This can make archiving more practical but changes the uninterrupted-stream experience.

A 2019 meta-analysis pooled 22 studies and 35 effect sizes across cognition, anxiety, and pain outcomes and reported an overall effect size of g = 0.45. It also found variation by frequency, exposure duration, and timing. That pooled result does not show that an individual stream treats anxiety or pain, or that a particular frequency produces a guaranteed mental state. See the 2019 meta-analysis.
Troubleshooting a 24/7 binaural stream
The Live Control Room does not show a preview
- Confirm the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key, and that it is actively sending a supported feed.
- Check the encoder’s connection and YouTube stream health. If the key may be wrong or exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.
The stream sounds mono or the tones are on the wrong sides
- Check that the source is stereo and that neither the encoder nor a downstream audio setting is summing channels to mono.
- Monitor the received stream with stereo headphones and confirm the left and right tones stay distinct.
The stream buffers, drops, or loses quality
- Check whether your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Reduce the target bitrate or video workload using YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Test again and monitor stream health.
The encoder or broadcast stops unexpectedly
- Check power, network connectivity, encoder process status, and whether the source or playlist has reached an error.
- Use a tested backup plan and arrange monitoring so a failure can be noticed and addressed. A backup encoder test does not guarantee seamless failover.
The YouTube recording ends early or is missing
A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use local recording for a complete archive, or schedule shorter events if YouTube’s archive is important.
