You can use OBS Studio to send a podcast to YouTube Live by connecting OBS to a YouTube stream key, routing your audio and video into OBS, and matching the encoder settings to your internet connection. That gets the stream online; it does not, by itself, guarantee unattended 24/7 operation. You also need a plan for computer, power, network, playback, and stream interruptions.
How do I set up OBS for a 24/7 stream?
Work through the setup in this order: confirm YouTube eligibility, create the live stream in YouTube Studio, connect OBS, configure your program and output, then test the entire chain. YouTube’s published instructions describe the encoder connection and streaming recommendations, but do not establish a guaranteed OBS restart or failover design for continuous operation.
1. Check that your channel can go live
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and its general eligibility page states streamers must be at least 16. Check your channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before scheduling. Requirements and interface details can change; consult YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
2. Create or schedule an encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live.
- Create or schedule a stream, then open its Live Control Room details.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select the applicable service if available, or enter the server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as the encoder’s password and address. If the key is exposed, use YouTube’s stream-management controls to reset it.
Labels may vary slightly with OBS and YouTube interface updates. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance if your screen differs.

3. Route the podcast audio and picture into OBS
For a live-hosted podcast, add the microphone or other audio input you plan to use and speak at a normal level while watching OBS’s audio meter. YouTube’s encoder guidance identifies microphones and preamps as examples of audio hardware used with an encoder. A USB microphone is an optional equipment category for live narration, not a requirement or a specific model recommendation.
For a prerecorded episode loop, add the playback source that contains your episode and confirm OBS captures both the intended audio and any visuals. A host microphone is not needed for prerecorded-only playback unless you plan to speak over it. Check the source and mixer levels before streaming so the audience hears the program rather than a silent or unintended input.

What bitrate and output settings should I use?
YouTube’s standard encoder guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Resolution and bitrate depend on your chosen resolution and frame rate, so use the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
OBS output checklist
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS, as supported by the YouTube connection settings you are using.
- Video encoder: H.264.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3.
- Resolution and bitrate: choose values from YouTube’s current table for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, while keeping within your upload capacity.

How do I test the stream before leaving it on?
- Start streaming from OBS while the YouTube event is open in Live Control Room.
- Wait for the preview or incoming stream status to appear.
- Check that the episode or live program has the right picture, audible and undistorted audio, and the expected motion and scene changes.
- Use YouTube’s Go Live controls as appropriate for the event, then watch the stream as a viewer if possible.
- Run a representative test long enough to exercise the playback behavior you intend to use, and monitor stream health rather than assuming a successful connection proves long-term stability.
YouTube recommends testing encoder setups, previewing before going live, and monitoring quality. Its streaming tips also advise checking outbound upload capacity and leaving 20% headroom: the total stream bitrate should remain within available upload bandwidth with that margin. What does OBS need for unattended 24/7 operation?
OBS can encode and send a stream while its host computer and connection are running, but a working encoder connection is not a complete recovery plan. The official guidance cited here does not specify an automatic restart strategy, power-loss recovery, or a failover architecture for an unattended OBS deployment. Plan and test those pieces in your own setup rather than treating the initial test as proof of uninterrupted service.

- Host computer: decide how OBS and the episode playback will resume if the computer restarts or OBS closes.
- Power: account for outages and what happens when the computer loses power.
- Internet: test the actual upload connection and consider what you will do when it drops.
- Playback: verify that a long-running episode or playlist continues and returns to the intended start point when needed.
- Alerts and checks: decide how you will notice a stopped encoder, missing audio, or a YouTube-side interruption.
- Recovery: test what happens after OBS or the network disconnects; do not assume a restart or reconnect will happen automatically.

How do YouTube archives and stream keys affect a podcast loop?
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will produce a complete replay archive. If a complete archive matters, plan separate recordings or shorter scheduled sessions as part of your workflow.
