You can run a continuous cartoon stream from a spare PC by playing a rights-cleared video or playlist in an encoder, connecting that encoder to a YouTube livestream, and keeping the computer and a reliable internet connection running. First verify that your channel is eligible and that you have permission to livestream every cartoon and soundtrack. Then test the complete setup before relying on it around the clock: YouTube may not archive a stream longer than 12 hours, and a PC’s ability to encode a chosen resolution depends on its actual hardware.
Before you begin: eligibility, rights, and a test plan
Check whether the channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a planned launch. See YouTube’s livestreaming enablement guidance and encoder livestream instructions.
Clear every cartoon and audio track
Having a video file—or access to a cartoon through a subscription—does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it publicly. Confirm that your rights cover livestreaming, the intended territories, and the soundtrack. YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a match is found, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the material remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed content, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID: a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. Assess the PC and network you actually have
There is no safe universal resolution or bitrate for an unspecified spare PC. Its processor or graphics encoder, cooling, stability, video source, and ability to play, encode, and—if needed—record at the same time all matter. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate. Use a reliable wired connection if available, measure your upload capacity under realistic conditions, and choose encoder settings the PC can sustain rather than guessing from its age or label.

Create and connect the YouTube livestream
- Enable livestreaming. In YouTube Studio, complete channel verification and livestream activation if you have not already done so. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a livestream using the encoder workflow. Open the stream’s settings and copy the server/stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube labels can change; follow the current encoder setup in YouTube Studio’s encoder instructions.
- Keep the key private. Enter the stream URL and key only in your chosen encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not publish it or include it in a recording or screenshot.
- Choose a supported connection method. Use the protocol and settings that YouTube presents for your stream and that your encoder supports. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS encoder workflows; it also supports HLS for compatible encoders. HLS has higher latency than RTMP and additional transport and segment requirements, so a 24/7 schedule alone is not a reason to choose it. See YouTube’s HLS livestreaming guidance.
- Set up the cartoon playback. Open the video or playlist in your playback/encoder setup and confirm that the intended material plays continuously. The exact playlist and restart automation depends on the software you choose; YouTube’s platform instructions do not prescribe a particular application or guarantee seamless looping. Test transitions, audio, and what happens when the playlist ends before treating the setup as unattended.
- Set the audience accurately. In the stream details, answer the made-for-kids audience question based on the content and intended audience. Do not choose an answer merely to retain features: YouTube disables features including live chat and personalized ads on made-for-kids livestreams. See YouTube’s guidance on content made for kids.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Begin sending the feed, then wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that both picture and sound are present, the correct cartoon is playing, and the stream status is healthy. Start the public livestream only after the preview is right.
- Monitor the first run. Watch the broadcast and encoder for dropped connection, playback stopping, overheating, or audio/video problems. For a long stream, YouTube advises monitoring quality and checking that a local archive file continues to grow if you are recording one.
Make the stream sustainable without assuming the spare PC is capable
Use a settings test, not a guessed preset
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the source video, encoder options, PC performance, and measured upload capacity. The available information about your particular PC is insufficient to recommend a specific value. Start with a conservative setting the machine can hold, check the YouTube preview and stream status, and test for long enough to reveal heat or stability problems before leaving it unattended. If performance degrades, reduce the encoding load or output setting and test again.
Plan for archives separately
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24-hour broadcast is therefore not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube VOD. If preserving the full program matters, make a local recording and verify that it is being written. Check available disk space first; recording alongside playback and encoding also adds work for the PC. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup: livestream archiving guidance.

Do not assume unattended recovery
A long-running stream needs a plan for more than the initial launch: a playlist can finish, the PC can restart, the encoder can stop, or the internet connection can drop. Test how your chosen playback and encoder software behave in those cases, and decide who will notice and respond. YouTube’s setup guidance does not specify a universal playlist automation, automatic reboot, or failover recipe.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Livestreaming is unavailable: Confirm that the channel is verified, meets the age requirement, and has no restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that the encoder uses the stream URL and key for the correct Studio stream, that the key has not been mistyped, and that the selected protocol matches the encoder setup. Keep the key private while correcting it.
- The preview is black, silent, or showing the wrong video: Check the source player, selected video/audio inputs, playlist state, and encoder preview before starting the public stream. Confirm audio as well as picture.
- The stream buffers or loses quality: Check that the PC is not overloaded and that real upload capacity leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Use a more stable connection where possible or lower the stream load, then retest.
- The broadcast is interrupted for a copyright match: Stop using the flagged material and resolve rights with the owner. If the material is licensed, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID; do not assume the license prevents the automated match from interrupting the stream.
- The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a checked local recording when a complete archive matters, and monitor its file and available storage during operation.
- Chat or personalized ads are unavailable: Check the made-for-kids setting. YouTube restricts features including live chat and personalized ads on livestreams designated as made for kids.
