How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream with OBS on a Rented Windows Server

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run OBS on a rented Windows server to keep a YouTube stream live, provided the server can run OBS reliably, has compatible graphics support, and can sustain the required outbound bandwidth. The basic process is to enable YouTube Live, configure OBS with your stream key and encoder settings, test the stream, then arrange and monitor restarts. A scheduled OBS launch helps with startup; it is not, by itself, a 24/7 reliability plan.

Before you start: check YouTube and the server

Enable live streaming on your channel

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and enable live streaming if it is not already enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned start. In Live Control Room, create a stream and choose whether it should be public, unlisted, or private. YouTube’s instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming and Manage your stream settings.

Confirm the Windows server can run OBS

OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements. That is not a certification of every Windows Server image, remote-desktop setup, or virtual GPU offered by VPS providers, and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee a particular stream will work. Before renting, ask the provider:

  • Which Windows image and edition will be installed, and whether it is compatible with the OBS version you plan to use.
  • Whether the machine provides graphics support compatible with OBS and how it behaves in a remote desktop session.
  • Whether logging off or closing the remote desktop session leaves desktop applications running.
  • How server restarts, Windows updates, and recovery after a crash are handled.
  • What sustained outbound bandwidth and traffic allowance are included.

OBS’s requirements are listed at OBS System Requirements. Ask your provider about its own Windows Server and session behavior; those details are provider-specific.

Choose bitrate and network capacity

Set the video bitrate according to the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then verify that the server can sustain it. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include:

Output YouTube-recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3–8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5–14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6–17 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 7–21 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended ranges, not a guarantee that a rented server can encode or deliver the chosen setting. The right value depends on the video’s motion, source quality, frame rate, OBS scene complexity, and stable upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom over the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and network requirements for current guidance, including settings for other resolutions and frame rates.

Configure OBS and connect it to YouTube

  1. Install OBS on the server. Use the OBS installer appropriate to the provider’s Windows environment, then open OBS in the session that the provider confirms will remain available for streaming.
  2. Build the broadcast. Add the scene, video source, and audio sources you need. Verify that the content is visible and audio meters move as expected.
  3. Copy the YouTube connection details. In Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, go to Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, or enter the server URL and stream key using the custom-server option.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not paste it into public messages, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the value in OBS.
  5. Set the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers, CBR rate control, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 ingestion, up to 60 fps. For a broadly compatible first setup, use H.264 unless you have confirmed that your OBS build and server can reliably encode another supported codec.
  6. Set audio and color deliberately. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for stereo audio and recommends 128 Kbps audio bitrate. For SDR, use Rec. 709. Keep the chosen OBS output settings consistent with the source and the available server bandwidth.
  7. Start a private or unlisted test. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Let representative motion and audio run long enough to expose instability before switching to the intended visibility.

YouTube’s live encoder specifications and ranges can change; consult its encoder settings page when configuring the profile.

Make OBS start automatically—and plan for failures

OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. For a Windows scheduled task or other automated launch, OBS says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. A launch parameter does not ensure that the server restarts after every failure, that Windows updates will not interrupt service, or that OBS recovers from every network or application problem. See OBS Launch Parameters.

Before relying on automation, test the full sequence: reboot the server, confirm the correct Windows account and desktop session are available, verify OBS opens the intended profile and scene, and check whether streaming begins as expected. Separately decide how you will detect a dropped stream, restart OBS or the server, and receive an alert. Those behaviors depend on your provider and automation setup, so verify rather than assume them.

Understand what happens to a 24/7 archive

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not guarantee an archive for one uninterrupted event that stays live for 24 hours or longer. A continuous feed and an accessible replay are separate requirements: if retaining a recording matters, arrange a separate recording or a segmented-event workflow and check YouTube’s current documentation before depending on a replay. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Common problems and what to check

  • OBS cannot connect: confirm the stream URL and key were copied correctly, the stream is enabled in Live Control Room, and the server can reach YouTube over the required connection. Reset an exposed key and update OBS.
  • Stream health reports instability: lower the video bitrate or output workload, then check sustained server upload capacity. Preserve YouTube’s recommended bandwidth margin for the combined primary and backup bitrate.
  • Black preview, missing audio, or an OBS error: check that the selected scene and sources work in the active server session, and ask the provider whether its graphics configuration supports the OBS workload.
  • OBS stops after disconnecting from remote desktop: confirm with the provider whether applications persist after logoff or session closure. A remote desktop window closing is not proof that OBS will remain running.
  • The stream does not resume after a restart or crash: check the scheduled task’s account, trigger, permissions, executable path, and working directory. Test recovery by rebooting; the --startstreaming switch alone does not provide restart monitoring.
  • No replay appears after a long broadcast: a 24-hour-or-longer event is outside the stated under-12-hour automatic-archive condition. Use a separate recording or segmented-event plan if replay retention is important.

Ways to keep a YouTube stream running

  1. StreamNeo: keeps uploaded video or playlists live on YouTube from the cloud, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and the first day free.
  2. OBS on a rented Windows server: gives you direct control over scenes, sources, audio, and encoding, but you are responsible for server compatibility, bandwidth, updates, monitoring, and recovery.
  3. Another managed service for prerecorded video: YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video live streaming. That listing establishes the use case, not compatibility with every OBS scene-based production or a comparison of price and service quality. Find it in YouTube’s encoder directory.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that plays uploaded video rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo avoids keeping a Windows server or computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the video. The stream runs at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year.
