Use OBS Studio to compose your story broadcast from separate scenes, then send it to YouTube Live Control Room using the stream URL and key. A looping file or playlist can keep content playing, and Fade or Cut transitions can move between an opening, story, and break screen. But OBS’s documented playback controls do not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream: test the full setup, monitor it, and plan for disconnections and YouTube’s archive boundary before treating it as always-on.
Before you build: confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s live-stream guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person going live must be at least 16 years old. Check the channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio before spending time building scenes.
Also decide whether the stream is made for kids based on its actual audience and content. YouTube says creators should set this themselves rather than rely on automated detection. That choice affects available features; it is not simply a way to enable or disable chat.
Build the OBS scene collection
Scenes are the layouts OBS sends to the stream. Sources are the items inside a scene, such as story video, illustrations, text, or audio. A straightforward collection for a children’s story channel might use these scenes:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Welcome: channel title or opening illustration, with quiet introductory audio if you have the rights to use it.
- Story: the story recording or a prepared sequence of story images and narration.
- Break: a still or short intermission screen. Avoid leaving a silent or blank scene on air unintentionally.
- Closing: a closing card or end screen for a planned end to a broadcast.
In OBS, create each scene in the Scenes dock, then use the Sources dock’s add control to add the relevant image, text, or media source. Arrange and size sources in the preview canvas. Give sources and scenes clear names so that the on-air choice is easy to identify during a long session. These are suggested layouts, not a tested or required template.
Choose a transition and set its duration
OBS includes Fade and Cut scene transitions. Select the transition in the Scene Transitions dock and set its duration there. A Cut changes scenes immediately; a Fade blends between them over the configured duration. Check the result in the preview before using it on air, especially when changing from a bright illustration to a dark break screen.
Studio Mode lets you prepare or edit a scene in preview before transitioning it to the live output. This is useful when you want to check the next layout and its sources before viewers see it. It does not automate a schedule of scene changes: someone must operate the transition, or the material must be prepared as playback content.

Set up looping playback
Loop one story file
For a single local recording, add an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop option. Test the final seconds and beginning of the file together: check whether the picture, narration, and any music start cleanly at the loop point. The loop control provides repeated playback, but it does not promise a gap-free transition or unattended 24-hour operation.
Loop a playlist
For a sequence of files, OBS’s VLC Video source provides a Loop Playlist option and requires VLC to be installed. Add the files in the intended order, enable playlist looping, and test every boundary. Confirm that the next item appears, its audio is audible, and no source unexpectedly covers the scene. A playlist’s successful test is not proof that it will recover from a computer, network, or platform interruption.
If you want OBS scene transitions between story segments, test how your chosen source setup behaves when playback advances. A playlist source and a scene collection solve different problems: the playlist controls media playback, while scenes control the broadcast layout. Do not assume a playlist automatically triggers a Fade between OBS scenes.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- In OBS, open Settings, then Stream. Select the service and enter the server/stream URL and stream key as appropriate for the YouTube connection.
- Keep the key private. It authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your stream. Do not show it in a screen recording, share it publicly, or include it in a scene.
- Start the OBS stream and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the expected scene, picture, and sound arrive before starting the broadcast in YouTube if the workflow presents a separate start control.
Use the preview as a real check, not just a connection indicator. Look for cropped text, black frames, silent narration, unexpected desktop capture, and mismatched aspect ratio.
Choose output settings for the actual connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingest; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. Use a compatible encoder and protocol offered by your setup, then compare the chosen resolution and frame rate with YouTube’s current bitrate table.
| Setting | What to use or check |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, as supported by the encoder and ingest option. |
| Rate control | CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; no more than 4 seconds. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3. |
| Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate | Choose a matching combination from YouTube’s current encoder table and test it against the connection’s reliable upload capacity. Do not select a bitrate solely because it is the highest value listed. |
| Ingest protocol | Prefer RTMPS where supported. |
For a long broadcast, leave headroom in the upload connection rather than designing around its best-case speed. A connection that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate can cause poor stream health even if OBS accepts the settings. Run a test with representative narration, movement, and the most demanding visuals in the actual location and on the actual connection.

Test the broadcast and plan for continuity
- Run a private or unlisted test. Use the same scenes, playback sources, audio levels, and output settings planned for the public stream.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health. Watch for dropped or unstable delivery, missing audio, freezes, and unexpected transitions.
- Let playback cross its boundaries. Test the end of a single file or each playlist handoff, then verify that looping behaves as intended.
- Monitor the computer and connection. OBS is running locally, so the computer, encoder, power, and internet connection all remain part of the broadcast path.
- Write down who responds to a problem. Decide who checks the stream, what to do if OBS stops, and how the YouTube broadcast will be restarted. The cited OBS and YouTube setup guidance does not certify autonomous recovery or guarantee continuous 24-hour operation.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how to maintain one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast across archive limits, disconnections, or restarts. Do not promise a single continuous stream without a separately tested continuity plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set the audience correctly and clear the story rights
In Live Control Room, choose the audience designation that accurately describes the stream. For a Made for Kids stream, YouTube disables live chat and live chat donations, Super Chat, and personalized ads; contextual ads may appear. Other restrictions include comments, cards and end screens, notifications, and some channel features. Plan the channel’s format and revenue expectations around those limits rather than promising interactive chat or personalized-ad revenue.
Check the rights for each story text, translation, illustration, music bed, and recording you stream. A story being old, familiar, or available online does not by itself establish that your particular edition, translation, artwork, or recording is free to use. Verify the exact materials and territories where you will stream them before broadcasting. YouTube’s copyright rules and any rights-holder claims can affect a live stream or its archive.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no picture | OBS is not sending to the intended stream, or the URL/key is incorrect. | Compare the OBS stream settings with the server URL and key in the correct Live Control Room stream. Keep the key private. |
| The preview is connected but shows the wrong scene | A different scene is selected, a source is hidden, or another source covers the content. | Check the selected scene and source visibility/order in OBS, then inspect the YouTube preview again. |
| Audio is missing or cuts at a loop point | The source or audio routing is wrong, or the media file has a discontinuity at its boundary. | Check OBS audio meters and the source’s audio settings, then listen through a complete playback boundary in a test. |
| Video stutters or stream health degrades | The selected bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the computer may not sustain encoding. | Test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate combination from YouTube’s guidance and check performance on the same computer and connection. |
| A playlist does not advance or repeat | The VLC Video source may be misconfigured, or VLC may not be installed. | Confirm VLC is installed, verify the playlist entries and Loop Playlist setting, and test the full sequence. |
| A stream ends or does not resume after an interruption | The local OBS session, computer, connection, or YouTube stream may have stopped. | Use the monitoring and recovery plan to identify which part stopped and restore it. Do not assume OBS playback settings provide automatic recovery. |
