You can use a Mac mini and an encoder such as OBS Studio to send a continuous lofi stream to YouTube: prepare rights-cleared audio and visuals, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder with the stream URL and key, then test and monitor the broadcast. A 24/7 stream is not guaranteed by the setup: home power and internet, the Mac and encoder, YouTube, account status, and copyright enforcement can all interrupt it.
What you need before you start
- A Mac mini connected to reliable power and an internet connection. Apple publishes model-specific hardware details on its Mac mini technical specifications page; no particular model is established as required for this workflow.
- An encoder, such as OBS Studio, to combine and send your video and audio. OBS’s Knowledge Base links to its current getting-started, streaming, troubleshooting, and audio documentation. The exact interface can vary by OBS and macOS version.
- A visual loop or scene and lofi audio you have the right to use in a YouTube livestream.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.
Clear music and visual rights first
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to use the entire broadcast worldwide, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and can interrupt a stream. A music license may not prevent that if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Check the license terms for YouTube livestream use, territories, duration, monetization, archived-video use, and Content ID handling; keep written records. A “royalty-free” label alone does not establish permission for every use.
See YouTube’s livestream terms and its guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Rights are still your responsibility whether the encoder runs on your Mac or in the cloud.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live to enter the Live Control Room.
- Create a stream and choose its visibility and other stream details. If your channel already has a configured stream, YouTube may let you reuse its settings.
- Find the stream URL and stream key in the Live Control Room. In OBS, you can connect through a supported YouTube service option or enter the server URL and key in the streaming settings. Follow the current OBS and YouTube screens, which may change.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
YouTube’s current encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Prepare a loop in OBS on the Mac mini
- Install OBS Studio from the official OBS Knowledge Base and open it.
- Create a scene for the broadcast. Add the visual and audio sources that make up your lofi presentation, and arrange them as intended for viewers.
- Configure the media or playback workflow so it continues through the material and returns to the beginning as needed. OBS’s documentation index links to current media-source and audio guidance; verify the exact controls for the version you install rather than relying on an assumed menu label.
- In OBS’s streaming settings, select YouTube or enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. Set a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your actual connection can sustain.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal with representative audio and visuals. Check that the sound is audible and clean, the image is correct, the loop behaves as expected, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream before launching publicly.
The official documentation does not establish a Mac mini-specific unattended-run recipe or reliability level. Test the exact Mac, macOS, OBS version, media, and connection you intend to use.
Choose encoder settings and test the upload
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its listed video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; encoder and YouTube compatibility can depend on the selected workflow. For a straightforward OBS setup, use settings supported by both your encoder and YouTube, then verify the received stream in Studio. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates for the listed SDR resolutions and frame rates, not minimum internet-plan speeds or independent measurements. The 1080p30 minimum is shown separately because it can help explain the lower edge of YouTube’s guidance.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps; 5 Mbps minimum |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
For a mostly static or lightly animated lofi scene, 1080p30 is a reasonable starting point, not a required setting. If your connection cannot sustain it consistently, try a lower resolution or frame rate and test the resulting picture. The bitrate is the encoder’s video data rate; your upload connection needs additional headroom for network overhead and other household use. Test from the location and at the time you plan to stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than assuming a speed-test result guarantees stability.

Start the broadcast and manage continuity
- Keep the Mac mini awake, powered, and connected to the network. Review macOS energy settings so the computer does not sleep during the broadcast, and test the behavior before relying on it.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health; complete the YouTube go-live step if your selected stream mode requires it.
- Monitor the stream and the Mac during an overnight test. Confirm the audio and visual loop continue, the network remains connected, and YouTube shows no warnings.
- Plan how you will notice and respond to a failure. Wired Ethernet, a UPS, backup internet, remote monitoring, or an automatic relaunch process may help with particular risks, but none is established here as required or as a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
A Mac-based encoder depends on the home computer, power, network, software, YouTube’s service, and the channel’s standing. A stream can stop even when its settings are correct. Treat “24/7” as the intended operating schedule, not a promise of uninterrupted uptime.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours becoming one automatic replay. If archived sessions matter, schedule shorter sessions that end before the limit, restart deliberately, and verify the resulting archives in Studio. Ending and restarting changes the live session and watch page, so plan how viewers will find the next stream. Keep a local recording if your encoder workflow supports it and you need a separate backup.

Copyright compliance and monetization are separate questions
Having permission to stream music does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies also apply to live streams and assess whether content is original and authentic. Generic, repetitive, or mass-produced content can be ineligible; a loop format by itself does not determine the outcome. Consider the originality of the music, visuals, curation, and presentation, and do not assume a simple loop will qualify for the YouTube Partner Program. Check YouTube’s channel monetization policies for the current rules.
Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live stream: If this is the channel’s first broadcast, activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours. Enable live streaming ahead of launch and check YouTube Studio for account or stream notices.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder: Confirm the selected YouTube service or server URL, the current stream key, and the network connection. If the key was exposed, replace it and update OBS.
- The stream health is unstable: Reduce resolution or bitrate, check upload capacity at the actual streaming location, and retest with other household traffic considered. Confirm the encoder is using CBR and the recommended keyframe interval.
- The stream is interrupted for copyrighted content: Review the rights for each audio and visual element, confirm that live use is covered, and ask the rights owner about channel allowlisting when applicable. A license does not ensure uninterrupted transmission if the channel is not allowlisted.
- The Mac stops broadcasting while unattended: Check power, sleep behavior, internet stability, OBS status, and any system or application alerts. Rehearse the full unattended workflow before relying on it; the setup alone cannot guarantee recovery from every failure.
- You do not see one replay for the full broadcast: Check whether the continuous stream exceeded 12 hours. For future sessions, plan shorter broadcasts and verify each archive in Studio.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded lofi videos playing without leaving the Mac mini on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera.
