You can use Streamlabs Desktop to send a YouTube live stream, but it does not by itself make that stream reliably 24/7. For the do-it-yourself setup, your computer, Streamlabs, video source, power and internet connection all need to keep working. This guide covers eligibility, the YouTube event, Streamlabs setup, encoder settings, testing and failure points—and explains where a cloud service fits if the stream must run unattended.
Before you start: what a 24/7 stream requires
Streamlabs Desktop is an encoder: it sends the selected scene from your computer to YouTube. A continuous broadcast therefore needs a source that keeps producing content, a computer that stays awake and online, and a stable connection. YouTube warns that network disruptions can interrupt a stream; the official Streamlabs guidance cited here does not establish a specific local-video looping control or automatic recovery after the app, computer or network fails.
For a game channel, that distinction matters. A live game capture or a scene with a camera is not the same as repeatedly playing a prerecorded video. Use only content you have permission to broadcast, and confirm the current Streamlabs app provides the source and loop behavior you need before relying on it for unattended playback.
1. Make sure your YouTube channel can go live
- Verify the channel and check that it has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days. YouTube may take up to 24 hours to enable live streaming the first time, so enable it well ahead of launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Sign in to the YouTube account that will host the broadcast. Check that the account and channel are the intended ones before creating an event or sharing its link.
2. Install Streamlabs Desktop and prepare a scene
Install Streamlabs Desktop and sign in to the intended YouTube account. Streamlabs’ quick-start documentation lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimum operating systems; software requirements can change, so check the current Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide before installing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In Desktop, create or select the scene you want to broadcast.
- Use the Sources panel to add the visual source—such as a game capture, display capture, camera or other intended content—and arrange it in the preview.
- Check the audio mixer. Confirm the intended microphone, game audio or other sound is present, and mute sources you do not want broadcast.
- Inspect the preview for notifications, private information, unintended windows and other material that should not be on stream.
The cited Streamlabs instructions cover general scene and source setup, but do not verify a current local-file loop control. If your plan depends on a prerecorded video repeating, check the current in-app controls and test a full playback cycle before treating the scene as a continuous source.
3. Create or schedule the YouTube live event
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set the title, description, thumbnail, category and privacy, then review any stream settings available for the event. You can also use Streamlabs’ scheduling flow; its guide is older than the current quick-start, so labels and steps may have changed. See Streamlabs’ scheduling guide.
Scheduling creates the YouTube event; it does not keep a source or encoder running. A scheduled event can be shared in advance, and YouTube says viewers can opt into reminders.

4. Connect Streamlabs to the correct event
Streamlabs documents two routes: sign into YouTube in Desktop and create a new event there, or create the event first in YouTube Studio and select it in Desktop’s Go Live flow. If configuring an encoder manually, retrieve the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio and enter them in the appropriate Streamlabs settings.

If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. Consult YouTube’s live stream settings help for event and key details.
5. Choose stable video and audio settings
YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video and constant bitrate encoding (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it; YouTube describes it as the secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the current bitrate table by resolution and frame rate.

There is no universally best bitrate: select a resolution, frame rate and bitrate the computer can encode and the upload connection can sustain. A higher resolution is not useful if it causes dropped frames or an unstable feed. Test the content you will actually broadcast, including fast game motion and audio, rather than judging by a static preview.
6. Test the broadcast, then go live
- Start the encoder from Streamlabs and confirm the correct YouTube event is selected.
- Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the picture, audio, event title and privacy setting.
- Check stream health and resolve any warnings before relying on the broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance and checking the preview.
- When the event is ready, go live in Live Control Room if YouTube requires that confirmation for your event.
- During operation, monitor stream health, audio/video quality, connection stability and the computer’s state. For a long-running local stream, also keep track of local recording or archive storage if enabled.
Keeping a local stream alive around the clock
Plan for the entire local chain
For Streamlabs Desktop to continue sending a feed, the source, application, computer, power and internet connection must remain available. Check sleep and restart behavior, operating-system updates, storage and application stability before leaving a stream unattended. The cited Streamlabs sources do not establish automatic recovery after a failure, so plan how you will notice an interruption and restart the broadcast.
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends keeping the combined bitrate of streams below available upload capacity with about 20% headroom. Check upload speed—not just download speed—and account for other household or office traffic. If you configure both primary and backup stream bitrates, include both in the total. A wired Ethernet connection may make the local link more dependable than Wi-Fi, but it is optional and cannot prevent an ISP outage. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.

Understand the archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise that a single 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one complete archive. If you need a full recording, plan and test a separate recording or archive workflow rather than assuming the 24/7 stream will be preserved intact. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Do not mistake event controls for recovery
YouTube event settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls. Those controls do not establish that a video source will loop, or that an encoder will restart after a computer, application or network failure. Treat those as separate problems to test.

Use gameplay, music, overlays and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permission. A game’s availability for streaming does not automatically grant rights to every soundtrack, cutscene or third-party asset included in it. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules, and check the game publisher’s streaming policy where relevant. Do not assume that looping a prerecorded video makes it eligible for monetization: YouTube’s channel monetization policies assess content under their own rules, including reused-content considerations.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Streamlabs will not connect to YouTube | Wrong account or event, stale stream key, or encoder connection issue. | Confirm the intended YouTube account and selected event. Recheck the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance also suggests signing out and back in, restarting Desktop, and refreshing the custom ingest/server selection for applicable connection errors. See Streamlabs Desktop troubleshooting. |
| YouTube preview is missing or stream health reports a problem | Encoder output, event selection, bitrate or upload stability. | Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm the encoder is sending to the right event, then lower output demands if the connection cannot sustain them. Compare your total bitrate with available upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| Picture appears but audio is absent or wrong | Muted or incorrect source in the Streamlabs audio mixer. | Check the mixer and source routing, then test again in the YouTube preview before going live. |
| Stream stops when left unattended | Computer sleep/restart, application failure, power loss, network interruption or an exhausted content source. | Check power, sleep settings, source continuity and connection stability. The cited sources do not establish automatic Streamlabs recovery after these failures; arrange monitoring and a restart plan, or use a cloud-based option designed for unattended streaming. |
| Expected video does not repeat | The required local-file loop behavior may not be available or configured as expected. | Verify the current Media Source controls in Streamlabs and test the end of the file through the start of the next cycle. The cited official Streamlabs guidance does not confirm a specific loop control. |

If you want prerecorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo plans, or start the free day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Streamlabs Desktop for a live camera or gameplay stream?
Yes. Streamlabs Desktop acts as an encoder for a scene built from sources such as camera or game capture; this guide’s setup applies to sending that scene to YouTube.
Does scheduling a YouTube stream make it run continuously?
No. Scheduling creates the event; the encoder and its source still need to send video.
