How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Stream on DigitalOcean

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. Run a media process on an always-on DigitalOcean Droplet to generate or relay video, and send its output to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. For a simple prerecorded loop, FFmpeg can repeat a prepared file with -stream_loop -1. You do not need Nginx-RTMP just to publish FFmpeg output to YouTube; it is an optional intermediary for a different server setup.

How the setup fits together

A 24/7 stream has two separate parts: a process that keeps producing video on a host that stays on, and an encoder connection that delivers that video to YouTube Live. A DigitalOcean Droplet can keep the process running without leaving your home computer on, but it is rented infrastructure with an ongoing hosting cost.

The source pipeline depends on what you want to show. A prerecorded stream reads video files and may loop them; a live-camera stream captures a live source and requires a production/capture workflow. These are not interchangeable configurations.

Check YouTube Live eligibility first

Before building the server, confirm that the channel is eligible to stream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. You must be at least 16 years old to live stream. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. For encoder setup, obtain the stream server URL and stream key shown there. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to publish to your channel. Do not place it in public code, screenshots, or logs; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.

Choose the DigitalOcean approach

Approach Best fit What it does Trade-offs to consider
FFmpeg on a Droplet Repeating prepared video with a relatively simple pipeline Reads media and sends the encoded stream onward; DigitalOcean’s tutorial describes looping a file with -stream_loop -1. Plan for media compatibility, whether transcoding is needed, process restarts, logs, and monitoring.
OBS Desktop production or capture from a local workstation A desktop application that can send a stream to a custom RTMP destination. YouTube also lists OBS as software for recording and live streaming. A workstation-based workflow depends on that machine and its connection staying available. DigitalOcean’s OBS example targets an Nginx-RTMP server, not YouTube directly.
SRS Marketplace image A media-server layer with broader protocol or management needs DigitalOcean documents SRS support for RTMP, SRT, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, authentication, restreaming, recording, virtual streams, and FFmpeg transcoding. More components mean more configuration and maintenance. Check the image’s software versions, resource needs, security, and licensing for your use case.

DigitalOcean’s SRS documentation includes a 4 GB Droplet in an API creation example; that is an example value, not a recommendation for every stream. The cited sources do not compare performance or total cost for the same workload, and there is no responsible universal Droplet size without knowing bitrate, resolution, codec, transcoding, region, and concurrency needs.

Set up a prerecorded loop with FFmpeg

DigitalOcean’s Nginx-RTMP tutorial demonstrates an FFmpeg prepared-file workflow and the loop flag. Nginx-RTMP is useful when you need your own RTMP server in the middle, but the tutorial’s OBS-to-server example should not be confused with a direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube configuration. The essential YouTube destination is the server URL and key from Live Control Room.

  1. Prepare the video. Put the file on the Droplet and confirm that FFmpeg can read its container, video codec, audio codec, and streams. Decide whether it can be sent as-is or needs transcoding; the right choice depends on the file and destination requirements.
  2. Get the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
  3. Configure FFmpeg to read and loop the file. The loop option documented in DigitalOcean’s tutorial is -stream_loop -1, which repeats the input indefinitely. A complete command must also specify the actual input path, output format, codecs or copy behavior, and YouTube destination. Those details depend on the media and are not a single universally safe command.
  4. Send output to YouTube. Configure the publishing destination with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Do not send the key to an intermediary or expose it in a shared command history or public logs.
  5. Check the result in Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed and that the intended video and audio are present before starting or scheduling the public stream.

The cited DigitalOcean tutorial is useful for understanding components, but it is not a complete production recipe for unattended YouTube streaming. It does not establish a current systemd unit, alerting, key rotation, reconnection policy, storage plan, or tested failure-recovery procedure. Build and validate those operational pieces for your deployment rather than assuming the loop flag alone makes a service self-healing.

When OBS or an RTMP server is useful

OBS is appropriate when the source is a desktop production or local capture setup. DigitalOcean’s tutorial shows OBS publishing to a custom RTMP server, specifically its Nginx-RTMP setup. That example describes the first leg of a relay architecture; it does not by itself configure the final delivery to YouTube. For direct YouTube publishing, use YouTube’s encoder destination details.

Nginx-RTMP is optional for a simple prerecorded FFmpeg stream. Add an RTMP server or a broader media server such as SRS when you need an intermediary for routing, protocol support, management, authentication, recording, or transcoding. Each extra service also adds configuration, resource use, security work, and maintenance.

Keep the stream compliant and operational

  • Follow YouTube rules. Continuous playback does not exempt a stream from YouTube’s Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. Make sure you have rights to the video and audio, and that the content complies with platform rules.
  • Account for stream limits. YouTube’s current guidance states a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Platform policies can change, so check the current YouTube Help guidance when planning multiple streams.
  • Plan for failure detection and recovery. A running process can fail, lose its input, or stop reaching YouTube. The cited setup material does not supply a complete alerting or recovery design; decide how you will inspect logs, detect a missing feed, and restart or repair the service.
  • Protect the host and credentials. Limit access to the Droplet and keep the stream key out of public repositories and exposed logs. Review the selected media server’s security and maintenance requirements.
  • Budget for the actual workload. Hosting cost depends on the selected Droplet and deployment. The cited material does not establish a current price, bandwidth allowance, or workload-specific plan size; check DigitalOcean’s current plan and transfer terms directly.

Common setup problems

YouTube does not allow the stream to start

Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether the channel has had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. If live streaming was enabled for the first time recently, activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours.

YouTube receives no encoder feed

Verify that FFmpeg or OBS is using the server URL and stream key from the correct Live Control Room stream. For an OBS-to-Nginx-RTMP setup, check which destination OBS is actually configured to use; that local RTMP server is not automatically the YouTube endpoint.

The video plays once and stops

Confirm that the FFmpeg input is configured with -stream_loop -1 and that the process remains running. The flag repeats media; it does not provide process supervision, alerting, or recovery if FFmpeg exits.

The video or audio is missing or incompatible

Inspect the input file and FFmpeg output configuration. Confirm that the intended streams are selected and that the chosen copy or transcode approach produces a feed YouTube accepts. The right settings depend on the source media and are not established as universal values by the cited setup guides.

The stream stops after running unattended

Review server and encoder logs, input-file availability, network reachability, and the YouTube feed status. A 24/7 design needs an independently planned restart and alerting strategy; the cited tutorials do not provide a tested all-in-one recovery configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without operating a Droplet and encoder process yourself, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
