1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo stream 4K at 60 fps from OBS on a Mac, enable live streaming on your YouTube channel, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, set the video output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, and choose a supported encoder and bitrate. YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 50 Mbps for H.264, at 4K60; those are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that your Mac or internet connection can sustain the stream. Test your complete setup before broadcasting.
This guide covers how to stream 4K 60fps on YouTube with OBS on a Mac, which encoder to use on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and how to check the result. YouTube’s recommendations can change, so consult its live encoder settings when configuring a broadcast.
Before you start: can your Mac and channel go live?
OBS lists macOS 11 or later and an Intel or Apple Silicon processor as its basic macOS requirements. That means OBS can run, not that every qualifying Mac can render and encode a complex 4K60 scene reliably. Performance depends on the Mac, source video, scene complexity, encoder and other workloads.
If the channel has never streamed live, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio well before the broadcast. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Its encoder setup guide explains channel activation and encoder streaming.

Install OBS
- Download OBS Studio for macOS from the official OBS installation guide.
- Open the downloaded DMG and drag OBS into Applications.
- Launch OBS and grant any macOS permissions required for the sources you plan to capture, such as screen capture or microphone access.
Check OBS’s system requirements for the current minimums. They are not a 4K60 performance certification.
Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream, then open its stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube. You can use a custom key and reuse it where appropriate; YouTube documents these controls in Manage live stream settings.
- In OBS, open Settings, then Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter or connect the stream key using the available fields. Use the stream URL if your configuration asks for a server address.
- Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send an encoder feed to your channel. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
YouTube recommends RTMPS where available. Confirm that OBS is sending to the intended stream before starting a public broadcast.
Set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps
- In OBS, open Settings, then Video.
- Set both the Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160.
- Set Common FPS Values to 60.
- Check that the camera or capture source, scene, and Mac can actually supply the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Upscaling a lower-resolution source to 4K changes the output dimensions; it does not restore detail that was not in the source.
If OBS struggles, simplify scenes and overlays or test a lower output resolution or frame rate. Change one major setting at a time and repeat the test so you can identify the cause of improvement or failure.

Choose an encoder and bitrate for 4K60
In OBS, open Settings, then Output, and configure the streaming encoder and rate control. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends a two-second interval and sets a maximum of four seconds. Its current live-encoder guidance gives these 4K/2160p60 ingest figures:
| Ingest codec | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not independent Mac performance measurements and not bitrate guidance for uploading a prerecorded video. The minimum is not the target for a dependable high-detail broadcast; use the recommended rate if your encoder and stable upload connection can sustain it. Leave headroom for normal network variation rather than choosing a rate that sits at the connection’s practical limit. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as ingest codecs, but codec availability depends on the encoder and OBS options on your particular Mac. Do not assume an encoder menu exposes every codec listed by YouTube.

Apple Silicon: use a supported hardware encoder
OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming with H.264 on Apple Silicon. A hardware encoder can reduce CPU workload, but it does not guarantee that the Mac can render every 4K60 scene without dropped frames. In OBS Output, choose the available VideoToolbox H.264 streaming option and configure the bitrate and CBR settings above.
Intel Mac: use x264 for streaming
OBS says Apple VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported on Intel Macs because that path lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. OBS directs Intel Mac users to x264 for streaming. x264 uses the CPU, so test the actual scene and watch OBS’s performance indicators; if it cannot keep up, reduce scene complexity or output demands.
Recommended Free Tools
OBS’s guidance is in its hardware encoding reference. No universal Mac model threshold can establish that a given 4K60 workload will work: source hardware, chip, cooling, overlays, browser sources and concurrent applications all matter.

Configure audio and SDR color
- Stereo: AAC audio at 44.1 kHz is a straightforward choice for a stereo stream.
- 5.1 surround: YouTube lists 48 kHz for 5.1 and supports 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC.
- SDR color: YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color space with 8-bit depth.
Use the relevant audio and color controls in OBS and verify the actual output in a test. HDR requires separate format and encoder configuration; it is not part of this basic SDR setup. YouTube’s supported values are listed on its live encoder settings page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the stream before the event
- Schedule or create an unlisted or private test stream if that suits the channel and audience.
- Start OBS and send a representative feed: use the same scenes, movement, audio, overlays and capture sources planned for the real broadcast.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview, stream health messages, picture, sound and stability at the selected bitrate.
- Monitor OBS and YouTube while the test runs. If you see dropped frames, instability or poor audio, adjust the connection, encoder load, scene or output settings, then test again.
YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its live encoder guidance also recommends monitoring stream health. Start early enough to resolve connection, audio and encoding issues rather than treating the first minutes of an event as a test.
Expect normal latency at 4K
YouTube says 4K/2160p live streams use normal latency; the low-latency option is unavailable at that resolution. If the broadcast depends on rapid audience interaction, explain that delay to viewers or consider whether 4K is more important than a lower-latency format.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming feed | The channel is not enabled for live streaming, or the stream URL/key is incorrect. | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation; verify the stream selected in Live Control Room and copy its current URL and key into OBS. |
| Unstable feed or stream-health warnings | The upload connection cannot sustain the chosen ingest rate, or is varying during the broadcast. | Test at the intended bitrate on the actual connection. If it remains unstable, lower the bitrate or output demands and test again. |
| OBS drops frames or the Mac struggles | The encoder or scene may exceed available system capacity. | Reduce browser sources, overlays or other scene complexity; close unnecessary workloads; try a lower resolution or frame rate. Retest the complete scene. |
| Image is not as detailed as expected | The source may be below 4K, or the chosen bitrate may not suit the content and connection. | Confirm the capture source’s native output, inspect the test preview, and ensure the connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended ingest rate for the selected codec. |
| Audio is missing, distorted or out of sync | The wrong input, format or scene audio routing may be selected. | Check the source and OBS audio meters, confirm AAC output, and review the test recording or live preview with representative audio. |
| Video looks wrong despite a 4K setting | Output dimensions do not necessarily match source detail or color handling. | Confirm canvas and scaled output are both 3840×2160, check the source resolution and SDR Rec. 709 configuration, then verify in the YouTube preview. |
Optional gear for a console or camera source
A screen-only stream does not require physical video accessories. If you want to bring a console or camera with HDMI output into OBS, an HDMI capture card may be relevant; verify that the specific device supports your Mac and the resolution and frame rate you need before buying. A capture card is not needed for ordinary screen capture.
Or let it run in the cloud
