To configure a YouTube backup encoder, set up the same stream on a primary and standby encoder, use the correct ingest details for the selected protocol, and test failover by stopping the primary. For HLS, YouTube explicitly provides a Backup server URL in Live Control Room; do not assume that field or URL applies to other protocols. A backup reduces the risk of losing the broadcast when the primary encoder fails, but YouTube’s published archive guidance for streams under 12 hours does not guarantee one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast or a complete single archive.
Before you start: choose the stream protocol and backup arrangement
You need two encoders capable of sending the same program feed: a primary and a standby. They can be software or professional hardware; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but does not require a particular model. Confirm that both encoders support your chosen ingest protocol and can use the required video and audio formats. If continuous operation matters, also consider whether they have independent power and network paths: two encoders sharing one failed connection or power source may fail together.
RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
Choose a protocol both encoders support. YouTube lists RTMPS as an option when the encoder supports it. HLS may be useful when you need HDR or codecs unavailable through RTMP, but YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. HLS also disables the Ultra low-latency option and has specific segment and playlist requirements. The explicit Backup server URL instructions below are for HLS, not a general rule for every protocol. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance describes supported protocols and requirements.
Create or select the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- On the Stream tab, create a stream or select the scheduled stream you plan to use. For a scheduled event, the Manage tab lets you schedule or reuse settings.
- Confirm the selected stream and protocol before copying ingest details. Do not mix credentials or destinations from a different stream.

Copy the ingest details to both encoders
YouTube’s stream key works like a password and address: it identifies where the encoder should send the feed. Enter the YouTube stream URL as the encoder’s server and the stream key in its key field, unless an encoder’s YouTube preset fills these settings for you. Configure both encoders for the same stream and matching output settings. Keep the key private; do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your stream.
If you are using HLS
- In Live Control Room, open Select stream key and create a new key.
- Select HLS as the stream protocol.
- Copy the displayed HTTPS Stream URL into the encoder’s server or destination field.
- For the backup encoder, copy the displayed Backup server URL into its backup destination field, if the encoder provides one.
YouTube says the HLS stream key is embedded in the URL, so it does not need to be copied separately. Follow the fields shown for the selected key and protocol; do not apply this HLS procedure to RTMP/RTMPS without confirming YouTube’s current settings and your encoder’s documentation. The HLS requirements include TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. Size the upload connection for both feeds
Measure available outbound bandwidth at the streaming location; a download-speed result is not a substitute. YouTube recommends capacity for primary bitrate + backup bitrate + 20% headroom. For example, if each encoder sends at bitrate B, plan for at least 2B plus 20% headroom, rather than sizing the connection for only one feed. Actual usable upload can be lower than a service’s advertised speed, particularly on a shared home or office connection. YouTube’s recommendation appears in its streaming tips.
Bring both encoders up and test failover
- Set up the encoders at least two hours before the event, as YouTube recommends, so there is time to resolve configuration issues.
- Start both at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the expected picture and sound.
- While monitoring the stream, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable. Confirm that the player rolls over to the backup feed; then restore the primary and verify that the system behaves as intended for your workflow.
- Check the stream on the channel or watch page and on mobile devices. Monitor audio and video quality, and verify that local recording or archive files are being created where you need them.
YouTube’s failover test is to stop the primary encoder (or unplug its Ethernet) and make sure the player rolls over to the backup. Its advance setup and start-time recommendations are event-preparation guidance, not a guarantee of zero interruption. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Plan separately for 24/7 continuity and archives
A backup encoder addresses failure of the primary feed; it does not by itself establish that a single YouTube stream session can run indefinitely or that an entire 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one video. YouTube’s encoder article states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That cutoff does not promise archival of a stream lasting 12 hours or more. Check YouTube’s current duration and archive behavior before deployment, and plan a recording, retention, or restart workflow if you need a complete record. Troubleshooting common backup-encoder problems
- The backup never takes over: Check that it is sending to the correct destination for the selected protocol and the same intended stream, then repeat the test by stopping the primary while watching the player. For HLS, verify that you used the displayed Backup server URL rather than assuming the primary URL is sufficient.
- YouTube does not show a usable preview: Recheck the stream URL, protocol, stream key or HLS URL, and encoder output settings. Confirm that the encoder is actually sending and that its connection has enough outbound capacity for both feeds.
- The stream stutters or drops when both encoders run: Re-measure outbound throughput and compare it with the combined primary and backup bitrates plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Investigate shared-network congestion as well as the nominal connection speed.
- HLS ingestion is rejected or unstable: Check the required TS segment length, playlist limit, no-byte-range rule, HTTPS POST/PUT method, and encryption restriction against YouTube’s HLS requirements. Confirm the encoder supports the selected codecs and protocol.
- The stream key may have been exposed: A channel owner or manager can reset the key in Live Control Room; update the encoder configuration with the replacement. YouTube’s guidance says editors and viewers cannot reset it. See YouTube’s encoder setup help.
- The broadcast ends but the expected full archive is missing: Do not infer a 24/7 archive guarantee from the under-12-hour statement. Check current YouTube policy and rely on a separate recording and retention plan for material that must be preserved.
