A CNAME record alone will not make a custom address open a YouTube Live page. A CNAME aliases one hostname to another; to send viewers from an address such as live.example.com to a YouTube watch page, you also need an HTTP redirect configured at a service that handles web traffic. The redirect is separate from the stream URL and key your encoder uses.
First, identify which address you want to customize
This guide covers a branded viewer address for a particular YouTube Live watch page—for example, live.example.com redirecting to an event. It does not create a custom domain for your YouTube channel or change where your encoder sends video.
If you mean a custom URL for the channel itself, YouTube says, “New custom URLs can no longer be set up and existing custom URLs can no longer be changed.” YouTube handle URLs are generated when a channel owner chooses or changes a handle; existing legacy custom URLs continue to work. See YouTube’s Custom URL overview.
What you need before setting up the redirect
- A domain and a DNS/web provider that can handle requests for the hostname and issue an HTTPS redirect. Provider features and record requirements vary.
- A YouTube Live event, created or scheduled in YouTube Studio, with the viewer watch-page URL you want the custom address to open.
- Your encoder’s YouTube Stream URL and stream key, copied separately from Live Control Room. Do not use the watch-page URL as the encoder destination, or put the stream key in a redirect.
- Live streaming enabled for your YouTube channel. YouTube’s live streaming help explains eligibility and setup.
Set up the custom viewer address
- Create or schedule the live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the stream and copy its viewer watch-page URL. Confirm the event’s visibility and access settings match your intent; a redirect does not make an otherwise restricted event public.
- Choose a hostname. A dedicated subdomain such as
live.example.comis usually easier to isolate than changing the root domain. Check your provider’s support for the hostname you want before altering DNS. - Configure the provider’s DNS record. Create the record the provider requires so requests for that hostname reach its web/redirect service. A CNAME destination is a hostname—not a URL, scheme such as
https://, or URL path. Do not guess a universal target: use the exact record target and proxy requirements documented by your provider. - Add an HTTP redirect. In the provider’s forwarding, URL redirect, or redirect-rule feature, set the source hostname and the destination to the exact YouTube watch-page URL. Choose deliberately whether the rule preserves paths or query strings; for a single event link, the destination should resolve to the intended watch page rather than an unintended appended path.
- Test the address. Open the custom hostname over HTTPS in a browser and verify it lands on the correct watch page. Check the event’s visibility as a viewer would. DNS propagation depends on provider behavior and caches, so completion time is not fixed.
Cloudflare example: proxied DNS plus a Redirect Rule
Cloudflare documents one implementation for redirecting a domain: a DNS record for the hostname resolves through Cloudflare’s proxy, and a Redirect Rule sends the browser to the destination URL. This is a Cloudflare-specific example, not a YouTube setting or a universal CNAME recipe. Follow Cloudflare’s current domain redirect documentation for its record and rule setup. Its example also covers preserving paths and query strings; for a YouTube event link, confirm that the final destination is the exact watch-page URL you intend.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the encoder connection separate
The custom domain is for viewers’ browsers. It does not relay video, ingest an encoder feed, or change your YouTube stream key. In Live Control Room, copy the Stream URL and stream key YouTube provides, then enter them in the encoder’s corresponding server and key fields. If using RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use an RTMPS-compatible encoder. YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol” in its RTMPS help page.
Choose a redirect approach that fits your domain
| Approach | What to verify |
|---|---|
| DNS/web provider forwarding | It supports HTTPS redirects for your chosen hostname, provides the required DNS/proxy setup, and lets you set the destination behavior you need. |
| Separate web host or redirect service | The hostname resolves to that service, the service can issue HTTPS redirects for it, and its configuration points to the exact YouTube watch URL. |
For either approach, check whether you need to preserve a path or query string. A root/apex hostname such as example.com has different DNS constraints from a subdomain; use the provider’s documented method rather than assuming an apex CNAME works everywhere.

DNS and HTTPS caveats
- A CNAME generally cannot coexist with other record types at the same hostname. Do not overwrite records used by an existing website or email service when adding a redirect hostname.
- Root/apex support varies by DNS provider. Cloudflare documents CNAME flattening for apex configurations; that behavior is not universal. See its CNAME flattening documentation.
- DNS by itself does not issue an HTTP redirect or guarantee that HTTPS certificates cover the custom hostname. The redirect service must be configured to serve HTTPS for it.
- For the DNS record and hostname conflict rules, consult your provider. Cloudflare explains its own DNS records with the same name behavior.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The custom hostname shows a DNS error or does not resolve. | The record target is wrong, the required proxy is off, a conflicting record exists, or DNS changes have not reached the resolver being used. | Compare the record and proxy state with your provider’s instructions; remove only a confirmed conflicting record, and allow for provider- and cache-dependent propagation. |
| The hostname resolves but does not redirect. | The HTTP redirect rule is missing, does not match the hostname, or points to the wrong destination. | Check the rule’s source hostname, enabled state, and exact YouTube watch-page destination. |
| HTTPS gives a certificate warning or fails before redirecting. | The redirect service may not have certificate coverage or HTTPS handling configured for the custom hostname. | Check the provider’s HTTPS/certificate setup for that hostname; DNS records alone do not provide a browser redirect or certificate. |
| The wrong YouTube page opens or extra URL text appears. | The destination may be wrong, or the rule may be preserving/appending a path or query string unexpectedly. | Set the destination to the event’s exact watch-page URL and choose path/query behavior intentionally. |
| The custom link works, but the stream will not ingest. | The viewer redirect is unrelated to encoder ingestion; the Stream URL, key, protocol, or encoder settings may be wrong. | In Live Control Room, recheck the YouTube Stream URL and key, select the matching protocol, and use YouTube’s RTMPS guidance if applicable. |
Or let it run in the cloud
