The service sends the media from the cloud, so a playback computer does not have to remain on. Set up the channel in advance: first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, according to Restream’s YouTube setup help.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A cloud playout service that supports scheduled or continuous playback and YouTube as a destination. A live-stream relay and a cloud playout system are not necessarily the same thing: confirm that the service can schedule uploaded media, not just forward a live encoder feed.
- The media you intend to broadcast, arranged into a playlist or schedule.
- A plan for stream metadata, audience visibility, copyright, monetization eligibility, archives, and what should happen if playback or the destination disconnects.
Choose the stream’s visibility in YouTube Studio—public, private, or unlisted—and finish the initial live activation before your intended launch. YouTube’s current controls and interface labels may change, so confirm them in your account as you work.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the cloud service
1. Create or schedule a stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Use the Stream tab to create a stream, or open Manage to schedule one.
- Review the title, description, visibility, and other stream details. A scheduled stream can be promoted in advance, and viewers may be able to set reminders.
Keep the stream open in Live Control Room while you configure the playout service; you will need YouTube’s ingest details.
2. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key
In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password: enter it only in the intended service, do not publish it or share it, and reset it if it is exposed or needs replacing. YouTube describes the stream key as the value to enter in the encoder or sending service.

When both YouTube and the cloud service support it, prefer the RTMPS URL. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Its controls may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; use the lock control in Live Control Room to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy that URL and the key into the compatible service. 3. Add YouTube as a destination
In the cloud service, add YouTube as the publishing destination. Depending on the service, you may be able to authorize your Google account and select a YouTube event, or manually enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. For example, Castr documents both connection approaches; it notes that if you use its manual key route, you must edit the stream description in YouTube Studio. Build a continuous schedule
Prepare and arrange your media
- Upload the recordings or other media files you are entitled to broadcast.
- Arrange them into the service’s playlist or schedule in the desired order, including any repeat or transition behavior the service offers.
- Set the service to continue between scheduled items if that control is available. Check what it does at the end of a playlist, during gaps, and if an item fails to play.
- Enable the YouTube destination and confirm that the schedule is assigned to the intended channel and event.
Castr describes its cloud playout as scheduling uploaded videos, recordings, and live streams into a continuous channel delivered to destinations including YouTube. That is a vendor-documented service capability, not a guarantee that every cloud streaming product offers the same workflow. Start the playout and verify YouTube receives it
- Start or activate the cloud schedule according to the service’s controls.
- Check the service dashboard to confirm the schedule is active and YouTube is enabled as a destination.
- Return to YouTube Live Control Room and verify that the stream appears and the preview is playing before you rely on it.
- Once live, check available health indicators. Castr documents dashboard metrics including bandwidth, viewers, bitrate, resolution, codecs, and audio bitrate; other services may expose different measurements.
Choose a service that actually supports continuous playout
For a YouTube channel that needs prerecorded media to keep playing around the clock, compare services on their playout functions, not just their ability to relay a live feed.

Archives, outages, and operational limits
Plan archive handling
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise automatic archiving for a longer continuous broadcast, so do not rely on a single long-running stream becoming a complete VOD. Consider service-side recording or segmented YouTube events, and verify archive behavior in your current setup. Plan for a dropped source or destination
Check whether the playout service can resume playback or reconnect to YouTube if the input or destination drops, and whether it provides alerts, a backup source, or recording. Castr documents backup options including a second-encoder takeover or backup VOD when a live input drops. Confirm how the selected option behaves and whether it applies to your plan; a feature description is not an uptime guarantee.
Keep the key and event aligned
If you create a new YouTube event or replace a stream key, update the service’s destination settings and verify the new event in Live Control Room. A stale key, mismatched event, or disabled destination can leave the cloud schedule running without a usable YouTube broadcast.

Copyright and YouTube monetization
Having a continuous schedule does not make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy expects monetized material to be original and authentic; repetitive or mass-produced content can raise inauthentic-content concerns, and reused content is assessed separately. Permission to use material or the absence of a copyright claim does not by itself settle a monetization review. These policies apply at channel level and include live streams. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and use media you have the rights to broadcast. A loop of third-party or minimally varied material is not guaranteed to qualify; this is a policy risk, not a legal determination about any particular work.
Before going live, check the copyright safety checklist and confirm rights for the video, music, artwork, and other included material. Rights to a video do not necessarily include rights to every element inside it.
Common problems and fixes
- You cannot start a live stream: confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and allow time for first-time activation. Restream’s YouTube help says initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the playout: confirm the destination is enabled, the correct server URL and stream key are saved, and the schedule is active. If the key was reset, replace the old value in the service.
- The stream appears under the wrong event or has stale details: check the selected YouTube event and edit metadata in YouTube Studio when using a manual server/key setup, as required by the service’s workflow.
- The schedule runs but playback stops between items: inspect playlist order, gaps, end-of-playlist behavior, and whether continuous or repeat playback is enabled.
- The stream disconnects or fails over unexpectedly: inspect service monitoring and confirm which recovery, backup, or recording controls are enabled. Do not assume a documented option is active by default.
- A long broadcast has no complete archive: streams longer than YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive scope need separate recording or event planning.
- Monetization is limited or denied: review the channel-level reused and inauthentic-content rules; a lack of copyright claims does not establish monetization eligibility.
