How to Set Up a Continuous YouTube Stream of Recorded Classes on a Cloud Server

A practical guide to streaming recorded classes continuously on YouTube from a cloud server, including Live Control Room setup, RTMPS, FFmpeg pacing, monitoring, and replay planning.

To stream recorded classes continuously as YouTube Live, create a stream in YouTube Studio, run an encoder on a cloud server, and have it send your recordings to YouTube at live playback speed. With FFmpeg, the -re input option handles real-time pacing; a separate playlist process and service supervisor are needed to manage what plays next and recover a failed process. For a managed alternative, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud without a computer running at home.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio.
  • A cloud server with your recorded classes available on local or attached storage.
  • An encoder such as FFmpeg, plus a way to choose the next file and restart the encoder if it stops.
  • A reliable way to protect the YouTube stream key and monitor the stream.

There is no universal cloud-server size or monthly cost for this setup. The right resources and bill depend on file compatibility, whether the server must transcode, storage, region, and outbound bandwidth pricing. Check your cloud provider’s current rates against those requirements rather than assuming a generic VM will suffice.

1. Create the YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to set up a new stream. For an event you want to schedule, use Manage → Schedule stream.
  2. Set the title, visibility, and event details. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility; choose deliberately, especially while testing.
  3. In Live Control Room, open the stream details and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter these into the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to publish to your stream.
  4. For a scheduled stream, create the event before starting the encoder. YouTube’s documented sequence is to connect the encoder, wait for the preview, and then select Go live.

Use the ingest address shown in your current YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on an address copied from an older tutorial. For transport, prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; its requirements specify port 443 and a valid YouTube endpoint and application path. The server hostname is also needed for authentication via SNI during the TLS handshake. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.

2. Prepare the cloud server and recordings

Make files available to the server

Place the class recordings on storage the server can read, and confirm that the streaming process has permission to access them. Check the files you intend to play for duration, video and audio tracks, codecs, frame rate, and aspect ratio. Those differences can affect whether FFmpeg can pass a file through as-is or must transcode it.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Install and test the encoder

Install FFmpeg using the method appropriate for your server’s operating system, then test a representative recording before building a continuous schedule. The exact encoding settings depend on the input files and the stream profile you choose; no single bitrate, resolution, or server configuration fits every class library. Test privately or with an unlisted event before broadcasting publicly, and check both the YouTube preview and the sound and picture at file transitions.

For a starting point on pacing a file as live output, FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. Its command-line documentation notes this is useful when output packet timing matters, such as live streaming. -re controls input pacing; it does not create a playlist, supervise the process, or guarantee recovery from every failure. See the FFmpeg documentation.

3. Connect the encoder to YouTube securely

  1. Configure your encoder with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Use the RTMPS URL YouTube supplies where supported.
  2. Store the key in a protected configuration file or secret store with access limited to the streaming process. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or repository.
  3. Start the encoder and check Live Control Room for a healthy preview before clicking Go live on a scheduled event.
  4. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the server’s protected configuration.

When using an API-based encoder, Google documents RTMPS ingestion address fields returned by the LiveStreams API. Its documentation also describes stream health status and configuration issues that can help with diagnosis if you implement API monitoring.

4. Make the broadcast continuous

Separate pacing, playlisting, and recovery

A continuous broadcast needs three distinct jobs: pace each file at live speed, determine which recording plays next, and restart or alert you if the process fails. FFmpeg’s -re addresses the first job only. Use a playlist runner or another file-sequencing approach for transitions, and configure a process supervisor such as the operating system’s service manager to restart a failed encoder. The details depend on your server and file library; test the chosen setup rather than assuming a single FFmpeg command will cover every case.

Monitor the stream and transitions

  • Check that the encoder process is running and producing logs.
  • Confirm Live Control Room receives the expected preview and reports no configuration problem.
  • Watch at least one transition between recordings for gaps, silence, unexpected aspect-ratio changes, or a stopped stream.
  • Test what happens after a network interruption or process restart, and decide how you will be alerted if the stream does not return.

A process that is running does not by itself prove that viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast. Monitor the encoder and YouTube’s receiving status separately.

5. Plan class replays separately

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a much longer continuous broadcast will become one complete automatic replay. If preserving a replay matters, keep the original class recordings independently, consider splitting the broadcast into shorter events, and verify the resulting archive on your channel.
