The server replaces an always-on desktop, but it does not configure or supervise the encoder for you: you must test the feed, arrange process restarts, and monitor stream health. This guide covers the do-it-yourself setup and its limits.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A Hetzner Cloud account and a virtual machine with outbound internet access.
- A media file or feed and an encoder that can read it and send a valid stream to YouTube.
- A way to supervise the encoder and notice when it stops or YouTube reports a stream-health problem.
There is no universally sufficient Hetzner server size for this job. Sending already encoded media without transcoding can use much less CPU than encoding or converting it in real time. Your source format, output settings, and encoder determine the load, so monitor resource use and size the server for the actual workload.
1. Prepare YouTube Live
Check channel eligibility
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meet the minimum age requirement of 16. Eligibility is channel-specific; check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before building the setup.
Create a stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then create or select a stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder. YouTube describes the key as the credential/address mechanism the encoder uses to connect; follow its encoder setup guide.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in public tutorials, screenshots, repositories, or shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
2. Create and secure a Hetzner Cloud server
Choose the VM configuration
- In Hetzner Console, create a server and select its type, location, OS image, networking, and SSH key. Hetzner lists Ubuntu among its Cloud OS choices; see its server creation guide.
- Add your SSH key during creation if you can. Hetzner notes that adding one later through the Console is not available, although other tooling can add a key.
- Choose a location based on your operating needs and network path. Hetzner recommends closer locations for larger projects, but its documentation does not specify a best location for YouTube ingest.
- Start with a server appropriate to whether you will stream-copy or transcode. There is no stream-specific size benchmark here; monitor CPU, memory, and network usage and resize if the workload warrants it.
Connect and set firewall rules
Connect to the server over SSH using its public IP address and a command-line SSH client, as described in Hetzner’s connection guide. If you use a Hetzner Cloud Firewall, its default blocks inbound traffic unless allowed and permits outbound traffic unless outbound rules are configured. For an encoder sending video to YouTube, retain the required outbound connectivity and limit inbound access to administration. You do not need to open inbound media ports just because YouTube receives your feed. Do not rely on a fixed YouTube destination IP or port unless current YouTube ingest documentation specifies it.

3. Install and configure an encoder
Install a media encoder that supports your chosen input and can publish to YouTube’s ingest URL. FFmpeg is one possible implementation, but a command that works for one file or codec may not suit another. Confirm the encoder’s current documentation and test your exact input, looping behavior, timestamps, and reconnect behavior rather than assuming a loop command will run forever.
Match YouTube’s ingest settings
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance as the source of truth. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that match the current YouTube table for your intended output and that your source and server can sustain.

- Stream-copy or pass-through: avoids real-time video encoding when the source is already compatible with the ingest settings. It may not be suitable if the source’s codec, dimensions, frame rate, or timestamps do not match what you need.
- Transcoding: can adapt the source to the chosen output, but increases compute demand. Validate that the server can encode continuously without resource exhaustion.
- Protocol: prefer RTMPS where supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current stream configuration.
YouTube transcodes incoming live video into playback variants, but that does not make an invalid or unstable input acceptable: the encoder still needs to send a valid stream consistently.
4. Test the feed before relying on it
- Start the encoder with a representative section of the intended media, including audio and visible movement if the stream has them.
- Open Live Control Room and check the preview and stream-health messages before treating the feed as ready.
- Verify that the watch page plays as expected and that the source does not end, freeze, or drift out of sync during a longer test.
- Measure the server’s sustained outbound throughput. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth above the total stream bitrate with 20% reserved headroom. If you send primary and backup feeds, budget for both.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. A process that has not exited is not proof that the stream is reaching YouTube successfully.

5. Keep the encoder running and monitor it
For a continuous installation, configure process supervision so the encoder can restart after a crash or server reboot. Add monitoring or alerting for encoder state, resource exhaustion, and YouTube stream health. A system service manager, watchdog, or monitoring product can be used, but none is prescribed by the cited YouTube or Hetzner setup guidance; choose and validate the mechanism for your operating system and encoder.
Supervision can recover from some process failures, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Server, network, encoder, or YouTube ingest problems can still interrupt the feed. Test restart behavior deliberately and confirm that the encoder can reconnect and resume the intended media without exposing the stream key.

6. Understand the archive limit for long streams
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish archive behavior for an indefinitely running 24/7 event. Do not assume one continuous event will produce an unlimited replay. Check YouTube’s current live stream archive guidance before deciding whether to use shorter scheduled events or preserve a separate local recording.

Hetzner’s server type and public IP are separate considerations, and prices can change. Its Cloud overview, last changed 2022-06-28, listed Primary IPv4 at €0.50 per month excluding VAT; treat that as dated provider documentation, not a current quote. Check Hetzner Cloud’s current pricing for server, traffic, and IP costs before provisioning.

Choose settings around the workload
- Higher resolution, frame rate, or bitrate requires a suitable source, encoder configuration, and stable outbound capacity.
- Transcoding generally demands more compute than sending compatible encoded media without re-encoding.
- A shared server may have less predictable resources than a dedicated configuration; the cited Hetzner material does not provide a streaming-specific benchmark for either.
- One long event and multiple shorter scheduled events have different operational and archive implications. The under-12-hour automatic archive guidance does not settle the behavior of an indefinite event.
Common problems and fixes
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Confirm that the stream is active in Live Control Room and that the encoder uses the matching server URL and current key.
- Check that outbound connectivity is allowed by the server’s firewall and any network rules.
- If the key may have been exposed or reset, replace the encoder’s saved value with the current key.
Live Control Room reports poor stream health
- Check the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guide.
- Compare sustained outbound bandwidth with the stream bitrate and preserve the recommended 20% headroom.
- Check CPU and memory use, especially if the encoder transcodes in real time.
The stream stops after running for a while
- Check encoder logs and server resource usage to identify a crash, exhausted resources, or an input file reaching its end.
- Verify that looping and timestamp handling work for the actual media, and test reconnection behavior instead of assuming it is automatic.
- Confirm process supervision restarts the encoder after a crash or reboot, then verify the resulting feed in Live Control Room.
The replay is missing or incomplete
Do not use the automatic archive statement for streams under 12 hours to infer what happens to an indefinite event. Check YouTube’s current archive guidance and plan separate recordings or shorter events if preserving a replay is essential.
Or let it run in the cloud
If configuring a VPS and supervising an encoder is more work than you want, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube stream from its cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube.
