You can use an old PC to send a stream to YouTube with MediaMTX, but whether that PC can also encode video depends on its hardware and your source. The basic route is source or encoder → MediaMTX → YouTube over RTMPS. If the PC only relays already-encoded audio and video, its job differs from encoding a camera or screen feed. Test your actual setup before relying on it for a live broadcast.
How the stream reaches YouTube
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy for routing real-time audio and video. It supports Linux, Windows, and macOS and is distributed as a single executable; Docker is another documented installation option. See the MediaMTX introduction and installation guide.
For this setup, a source or encoder publishes to a MediaMTX path. MediaMTX then forwards that path to YouTube using RTMPS and your YouTube stream key. The old PC may run MediaMTX, perform the encoding, or do both; identify its role before choosing settings.
Check YouTube eligibility first
YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check your channel’s status and current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help.

No separate India-specific encoder setting or setup exception is established by the official guidance cited here. Your ISP’s upload speed and your channel’s eligibility need to be checked for your individual setup.
Install MediaMTX on the PC
- Identify the PC’s operating system and architecture, then choose the matching standalone MediaMTX binary from the official installation guide. Docker is an alternative if the host supports it.
- Start MediaMTX using the instructions for the chosen installation method. If you need repeatable behavior across updates, pin a release rather than relying on an automatically changing version.
- Decide whether MediaMTX will receive an already-encoded stream or whether this PC must encode a camera or screen feed. The cited documentation does not set minimum PC specifications for either workload, so no model-specific performance can be assumed.
Get the current YouTube stream URL and key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current ingest URL and use the stream key associated with the broadcast. YouTube describes the key as the password and address for the feed; keep it private. The MediaMTX forwarding example uses an RTMPS destination with a # separator before the key, but the documentation says to verify that its example URL is still current. Follow the URL shown in your own Live Control Room rather than assuming a fixed ingest address. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guide and MediaMTX’s forwarding guide.

Configure a MediaMTX path to forward to YouTube
Add a path with a forwarding destination to the MediaMTX configuration. The documented pattern is:

- dest: rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#streamKeyReplace the example destination with the current RTMPS URL from YouTube and replace streamKey with your actual key. Treat the line above as a pattern, not a guarantee that the example URL remains valid. The MediaMTX documentation’s example has also included a certificate fingerprint because of a certificate-validation issue reported at the time that documentation was updated. Do not copy an old fingerprint blindly; check the current forwarding documentation and your current connection conditions.

Configure your source or encoder to publish audio and video to the MediaMTX path you set up, then start the source and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects a video-only stream, so confirm that audio is present in the outbound feed as well as video.
Choose encoder settings for the PC and connection
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (not more than four seconds), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use a combination your encoder actually supports. The following H.264 bitrate values are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that an old PC can encode reliably.

These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026. The same guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. A higher resolution or frame rate can demand more from an encoder and a connection; choose settings based on what the PC can encode and what your upload can sustain.

Run a speed test on the same connection the PC will use. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom and warns that other network use can constrain a stream. A result from a speed test is not a promise of sustained capacity during a live broadcast, so test with representative motion and audio and monitor stream health before relying on the setup. If the connection is unreliable and the PC can use Ethernet, a wired network connection is worth testing. It cannot guarantee bandwidth or fix an ISP-side limitation.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- YouTube receives no stream: Check that the source is publishing to the MediaMTX path you configured, that the forward destination uses the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, and that the stream key is correct.
- YouTube shows video but no usable stream: Confirm the outgoing feed includes both audio and video. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams.
- The stream key appears in a public place: Treat it like a password. Replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the MediaMTX destination.
- The stream is unstable or drops frames: Measure sustained upload speed, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check whether other devices or applications are using the connection. Test a lower resolution or frame rate if the PC is encoding or the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
- The old PC struggles: Separate encoding from relaying. If it encodes the source, reduce resolution or frame rate, or use hardware encoding only if that PC’s GPU or CPU supports it. If it only forwards already-encoded media, test CPU, memory, and sustained network behavior with the real stream; the documented guidance does not provide a universal minimum specification.
- RTMPS forwarding fails after copying an example: Recheck the current YouTube ingest URL and the current MediaMTX forwarding documentation. Do not reuse an outdated certificate fingerprint without verifying that it applies to your current setup.
