Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo set up a Meta Quest 2, install the Meta Horizon app on your phone, sign in to a Meta account, pair the headset with the code it displays, connect it to Wi‑Fi, and follow the headset prompts to update, configure the controllers and set a safe Guardian boundary. Then finish the tutorial and install an app. The Quest 2 is an older headset, so check each app’s current store listing rather than assuming every newer Quest feature or app is supported.
What you need before starting
- Quest 2 headset: Charge it with a compatible USB-C cable and adapter if available. Keep it powered during setup and updates.
- Controllers: Use the two Touch controllers supplied with your unit, if included. Bundles and refurbished units can differ.
- Phone and app: Have a compatible iPhone or Android phone nearby, with Bluetooth enabled. The phone should be connected to the Wi‑Fi network you plan to use with the headset; app behavior and requirements can change.
- Meta account and internet: Sign in to an existing Meta account or create one in the app. You will need internet access for setup and downloads.
- Safe play space: Clear a well-lit area before putting on the headset. Move furniture, cables, pets and breakable items out of the space.
Glasses spacers, headphones, a more comfortable strap, a case and a PC connection are optional. None is required for a basic standalone setup.
Install the Meta Horizon app
- Open your phone’s official app store and search for Meta Horizon.
- Check that the developer is Meta, then install or update the app. The current iOS listing identifies Meta Horizon as Meta’s companion app for Quest devices: Meta Horizon on the Apple App Store.
- Open the app and sign in to your Meta account, or create one.
- Allow the permissions the app requests for device discovery and setup.
Older guides may call the companion app the Oculus app or Meta Quest app, and may refer to Oculus accounts. Those are older names; look for Meta Horizon in the current app store.
Turn on and pair the Quest 2
- Hold the headset’s power button until it starts, put it on, and follow the initial on-screen instructions.
- In Meta Horizon, open the device area and choose the option to add a headset or device. Select Quest 2, then continue through the prompts. Button names and locations can change between app versions.
- When asked, enter the pairing code shown in the headset. During first-run setup, follow the code prompt on screen. For manual re-pairing, Meta community support reports that the code may be available in the headset under Settings → General → About; that recovery location may not match the first-run screens. See Meta community guidance on pairing and device recovery.
- Wait for the app to confirm the connection. The Quest 2 should appear as a connected device with device-management controls.
If the app cannot find the headset, keep the phone close, toggle Bluetooth off and back on, and restart both devices. Confirm you are signed into the intended Meta account and selected Quest 2, then use Add new device rather than an old device entry. Update the app and try again before reinstalling it.

Connect to Wi‑Fi and install updates
The headset normally asks you to connect to Wi‑Fi during initial setup. Use a stable private network, preferably at home, and keep the headset near the router. Hotel, school and airport networks may require a browser sign-in and can fail during setup. Keep the headset powered and connected while it downloads or installs an update; do not interrupt it unless the screen has clearly stopped progressing for an extended time.
If setup loops at an update screen, restart the headset and try again on a stable network. Check the password and signal, and restart the router if needed. A phone hotspot can help diagnose a network problem, but may be unsuitable for a large download. The CDC OneLab setup guide also describes Wi‑Fi, updates, app connection and Guardian setup as parts of Quest initialization: CDC OneLab Quest setup guide. Firmware versions and update requirements change, so there is no lasting version number to rely on.
Set up the controllers
- Remove any battery tabs, then check that each controller’s batteries are installed in the correct orientation.
- Press a button or trigger to wake each controller and follow the headset prompts.
- If a controller is missing, remove and reinstall its battery, then try a fresh battery and restart the headset.
- If it still will not connect, use the controller-pairing option in Meta Horizon’s device or controller settings if available. Menu placement can vary. Inspect the buttons and tracking ring for physical damage.
Start onboarding with controllers even if you intend to use hand tracking. Controllers are consistently supported during setup; hand tracking works only in supported menus and apps, not every game.

Calibrate the floor and draw a Guardian boundary
Set the floor level
Follow the headset prompt to point a controller at the physical floor and confirm its height. If the virtual floor seems too high or low, repeat the calibration. A quick check is to place a virtual object near the floor and see whether it appears to rest at the real floor level.

Clear the area before tracing a boundary. For room-scale play, draw the Guardian line several inches inside obstacles, not right beside a wall, table or other hazard. Redraw it whenever furniture or the play area changes. For seated play or a small space, choose a stationary boundary if offered. Stationary mode suits seated experiences and media, but does not make a cramped room safe for games that require movement.
A University of South Carolina Quest 2 guide describes the drawn Guardian boundary and stationary option for small play spaces: Quest 2 user guide. Guardian is a warning aid, not a collision barrier. Do not play near stairs, balconies, glass, fireplaces, open water or moving vehicles. Passthrough can help you see the room but is not perfect protection. Stop if tracking becomes unreliable, and supervise children according to Meta’s current age and safety guidance.

Finish the tutorial and install your first app
Complete the headset tutorial to learn pointing and selecting, trigger and grip controls, menu access, headset fit, passthrough and Guardian warnings. Optional demos and tutorial experiences may be renamed or changed, so follow the onboarding prompts rather than looking for a specific older experience.
- Open the headset store or Meta Horizon app while signed in to the account that owns the headset.
- Select a free app or one already purchased on that account, then choose install or download.
- Wait for installation to finish and launch the app from the library or home interface.
Some apps need an additional account, subscription, age eligibility or PC connection. Check the app’s current listing for Quest 2 compatibility; newer Quest models’ features do not necessarily carry over.

Optional: cast the headset view
Casting lets another person watch what the wearer sees. The receiving device and headset generally need to be reachable on the same local network. Start from the headset’s sharing or casting controls, or look for casting in the Meta Horizon app. Supported phones, TVs, Chromecast devices and browsers, as well as menu locations, can vary by software version and hardware, so do not assume every TV has a universal casting path.

Troubleshoot common Quest 2 setup problems
| Problem | Try first |
|---|---|
| App cannot find the headset | Check the Meta account, enable Bluetooth, bring the phone close, restart both devices, update the app, then choose Add new device. |
| Pairing code is rejected | Confirm Quest 2 is selected and the correct account is in use. Restart, add the device again, and check whether an old device association is involved. |
| Wi‑Fi or update will not finish | Use a stable private network, verify the password, keep the headset powered, and restart the headset and router before retrying. |
| One controller will not connect | Re-seat or replace its battery, restart the headset, then try the app’s controller re-pairing option if available. |
| Boundary or tracking keeps failing | Improve room lighting without shining direct sunlight into the lenses, clear reflective clutter, recalibrate the floor, redraw the boundary and restart. Persistent tracking failure in a suitable room may indicate a software or hardware issue. |
| Used headset will not complete setup | Ask the previous owner to remove the device from their account and factory-reset it. An ownership association or hardware damage can be the cause, not just a setup mistake. |
For account or pairing conflicts, Meta community guidance describes adding the device again and removing an obsolete association before resorting to a reset: Meta community device-association guidance. Avoid unofficial setup bypasses; if the account or device remains inaccessible, contact Meta support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setting up a used or factory-reset Quest 2
Ask the seller to factory-reset the headset before handoff, ideally in front of you. Meta support says a reset removes headset data and that the first account used to log in afterward becomes the new owner for setup purposes. That is support guidance about device setup, not a general legal ownership rule. Do not proceed on the assumption that every account or management lock can be bypassed.
- Confirm it reaches the initial setup screen and pair it to your own phone if possible before completing a private sale.
- Test both controllers; inspect batteries for corrosion and tracking rings for damage.
- Check lenses for scratches, the USB-C port for damage and whether the headset charges.
- Ask whether it is managed by a business or school. Do not assume a managed device can be released by a consumer reset.
- Check the facial interface and other parts for condition and hygiene.
Used units may also have missing accessories, battery wear, old software or setup loops. These can point to hardware or account issues rather than a simple pairing mistake.

Factory-reset a Quest 2 only as a last resort
A factory reset erases local headset data and requires setup again. Try account checks, app/device re-pairing, restarts and network troubleshooting first. If you can still manage the headset in Meta Horizon, the commonly reported app path is Devices → select headset → Headset Settings → Advanced Settings → Factory Reset, then confirm. Labels may differ in the current release.
If you cannot reset through the app, Meta community support reports this headset procedure:
- Turn the headset completely off.
- Hold Power and Volume Down together until the boot menu appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset, then press Power.
- Select Yes to confirm.
After it restarts, complete setup with the intended Meta account. See Meta community guidance on reset controls and Meta community guidance on reset and ownership behavior.
