Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To set up a racing wheel in American Truck Simulator (ATS), connect and check the wheel and pedals using the manufacturer’s PC software, then open Options > Controls in the game and assign the steering and pedal axes. Test each control before driving normally, choose a transmission layout that matches your setup, and begin force-feedback tuning from SCS’s defaults.
Before you configure the wheel in ATS
Connect the wheel and pedals as directed by their manufacturer. If the wheel has a driver or configuration utility, use it to check that the device is detected and that turning the wheel and pressing each pedal produce an input. Installation steps differ by model, so follow the maker’s current PC instructions rather than assuming one setup sequence applies to every wheel.
ATS supports wheel input, but the exact driver and device configuration depend on your hardware, operating system and wheel software. SCS documents force-feedback support for compatible wheels that can apply constant force through DirectInput on Windows or evdev on Linux; that does not establish compatibility for every model.
Assign steering and pedal inputs
- Open the controls screen. In ATS, go to Options > Controls. The game provides an input configuration interface for mapping controller axes. Older community instructions may refer to an input wizard or labels that have since changed, so use the labels shown in your current build.
- Assign the steering axis. Select the steering input, then turn the wheel when prompted. Check that the game’s input indicator responds as you turn.
- Assign each pedal separately. Select throttle, brake and, if you have one, clutch; press the corresponding pedal when prompted. Confirm that the indicator reacts to the pedal you are testing, not another control.
- Check direction and range. Watch each axis indicator while moving its control through its range. If a pedal registers backward, inspect that axis’s inversion setting. If the wrong pedal is registering, check its assignment and the manufacturer’s utility for device-specific combined-pedal settings.
- Save and test before a regular drive. Test steering, throttle and brake individually in a safe in-game situation. Make sure the truck responds in the intended direction before setting out.
Choose a transmission layout
Pick a transmission and shifter arrangement that matches both your hardware and how you want to drive. SCS documents multiple shifter layouts. A separate H-shifter is optional: the ATS manual says the H-Shifter option requires a special controller add-on. If you do not have a compatible shifter, choose a layout suited to the controls you do have.

Set up force feedback carefully
SCS describes its force-feedback system as combining centering and tire-friction feedback based on steering-axle forces with artificial effects. Its FAQ says the system refreshes at 120 Hz independently of the main game loop. Those are SCS’s published descriptions of the game’s implementation, not comparative tests of wheel hardware. SCS Software’s Force Feedback FAQ explains the available controls, including overall gain, centering at low and high speed, internal friction, engine resonance, terrain surface, bumps and collisions.
After the force-feedback changes in version 1.42, SCS recommended resetting the force-feedback settings to their defaults. Start there rather than assuming that the midpoint of every slider is a suitable baseline. If the result feels wrong, change one effect at a time so you can identify what is responsible.

- SCS cautions that overall gain above 6 N may not be safe in some cases.
- SCS does not advise engine resonance above 0.15.
- SCS warns that terrain-surface values above 0.2 may cause substantial shaking and vibration.
- When using ATS’s in-game force feedback, SCS recommends turning off hardware-profile spring-centering effects. For troubleshooting, it also suggests disabling artificial effects individually.
These limits and recommendations come from SCS’s FAQ; they are not a guarantee that a particular setting is safe or comfortable for every wheel. Follow the wheel maker’s guidance as well.
Troubleshoot recognition, pedals and force feedback
ATS does not recognize the wheel or pedals
First check whether the manufacturer’s utility detects the device. If it does, return to Options > Controls and inspect the in-game assignments. If you are following a screenshot or wizard instruction from an older guide, its labels may no longer match: SCS updated controller configuration in version 1.51, and later interface work has changed the surrounding menus. Use the controls and labels in your installed build.

A pedal is reversed or activates unexpectedly
Check that the pedal is assigned to the correct axis, then inspect that axis’s inversion setting. If the manufacturer’s utility offers combined-pedal configuration, check that too. A May 2026 SCS forum discussion describes a user trying axis inversion and rerunning the controller wizard after a reverse-related problem; treat that as a troubleshooting example, not a guaranteed fix for every wheel.
Force feedback feels incorrect
Reset the in-game effects to SCS’s defaults, turn off hardware spring centering when using in-game feedback, and adjust one effect at a time. If you disable artificial effects to isolate a problem, restore only the ones you want to use.

What to check when choosing a wheel
You do not need to buy a new wheel if your existing device is compatible with your PC and ATS. If you are comparing hardware, check these practical points with the manufacturer before purchasing:
- PC support and driver availability for your operating system.
- Force-feedback support and the wheel’s configuration options.
- Wheel rotation range and adjustability.
- Pedal layout and whether the pedals can be configured independently.
- Whether a shifter is included, if you want manual shifting, and whether it works with both the wheel and PC.
- Warranty and manufacturer support.
SCS’s cited documentation does not name or rank specific wheel models, so it does not establish a best wheel for ATS.

Menu changes and version context
Controller configuration has changed over ATS updates. SCS updated controller configuration in version 1.51, and its February 2026 version 1.58 release provides more recent update context. In June 2026, SCS described an MFD and in-game menu feature in an experimental beta; an experimental beta is not proof that a menu change is present in every stable installation. Check the version and labels in your own game instead of relying on screenshots from another release.
