Plan the layout before choosing equipment
Sketch the desk and nearby walkway, then mark where you sit, where the camera needs to point, and where the monitor and microphone can go. Include doors, drawers, and anything you need to reach. The goal is a setup that fits the room without making the desk unusable or narrowing the walking path.

Check every fit in your actual room
- Measure the usable desk surface, including the space taken by the monitor stand and anything that cannot be moved.
- Check the depth needed for your keyboard, mouse, microphone, and camera framing.
- Confirm that a proposed mount fits your monitor or desk and does not interfere with adjustment.
- Trace cable routes to an outlet or computer without crossing the walkway or creating a snag point.
- Recheck the room with the chair pulled out; a layout that fits when empty may block movement during use.
Place the webcam and frame the shot
Use a webcam you already have if it works for your needs. In OBS, add it as a Video Capture Source, then resize and position the camera image in the preview so it does not cover important game or desktop content. - Open OBS and select the scene you want to use.
- In the Sources box, choose the add-source control and select Video Capture Device (also called Video Capture Source in OBS guidance).
- Select the connected webcam in the device properties and confirm the preview appears.
- Resize and move the camera image within the canvas. Keep it clear of the game information, chat, or other content viewers need to see.
- Check the framing from your normal seated position. Make sure the camera shows the view you intend rather than an awkward crop or a distracting part of the room.

Fit the microphone and balance audio
Place the microphone where you can speak comfortably without pushing the keyboard or mouse into the walkway. Before adding equipment, see whether moving the mic or changing its position gives you a clearer, more practical desk arrangement.

In OBS, use the Audio Mixer while speaking and while game or desktop audio is playing. Adjust the sources so your microphone remains audible rather than being masked by the game or other computer sound. OBS’s tutorial specifically covers balancing desktop or game audio against microphone audio; it does not establish one universal setting that suits every mic, room, or voice.
Light your face without taking over the floor
Put a light in front of you so it illuminates your face. If a floor stand would obstruct movement, a monitor-mounted light is one possible space-saving arrangement. StudioKitGuide names the Elgato Key Light Neo as its pick, but that recommendation is not a hands-on comparative test. Check current availability, price, and compatibility yourself; a particular model is not established as the best choice for every small room.
Choose new gear only to solve a real constraint
If you do not already have a usable camera, a USB webcam is a reasonable category to consider. OBS’s workflow confirms how a webcam can be added to a scene, but the available guidance does not establish a best model or comparative camera quality. Likewise, a compact monitor-mounted light is an option rather than a requirement. Compare footprint, mounting fit, connections, ease of positioning, and current total cost against the equipment you already own before deciding.
