Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo keep a Raspberry Pi YouTube stream running through a mains interruption, size the UPS for the Pi and every powered part of the live chain—not just the board. Start with your exact Pi model, measure the setup while streaming, then choose a regulated 5 V solution with sufficient continuous current, documented transfer behavior, and a safe low-battery shutdown plan. If your router or modem loses power too, it needs backup as well.
There is no dependable universal runtime figure: it depends on the UPS’s usable battery energy, conversion losses, and the complete setup’s actual load. The steps below help you choose and test a setup in India without mistaking a power-supply rating for measured streaming consumption.
1. Identify the Pi model and everything that needs power
Make an inventory before choosing a UPS. Include the Raspberry Pi, camera or capture device, USB peripherals, storage, fan, and any powered Ethernet switch. Also include the router and modem if they must stay online during an outage. Keeping the Pi powered cannot preserve a YouTube stream if the network path or camera loses power.
Raspberry Pi’s recommended supply ratings vary by model. They describe recommended supplies, not the current your particular FFmpeg stream will draw.

| Raspberry Pi model | Recommended supply rating |
|---|---|
| Pi 5 and Pi 500 | 5 V at 5 A |
| Pi 4 Model B | 5 V at 3 A |
| Pi 3, Pi 2, Pi 1, and Zero models listed in the documentation | 5 V at 2.5 A |
With a 5 V at 3 A supply, Raspberry Pi 5 limits peripheral power to 600 mA. Raspberry Pi notes that its voltage recommendations are measured at the plug, so cable voltage loss matters. Its guidance says, “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply.” See Raspberry Pi power-supply recommendations.
2. Choose a UPS architecture and check its limits
Pi UPS board or HAT
A board that attaches to the Pi can be compact, but physical fit does not establish electrical suitability. Compare its regulated output voltage and continuous current limit with the Pi model and measured peripheral load. Check connector compatibility, battery chemistry and usable capacity, transfer behavior, and whether it reports low battery or supports automatic clean shutdown.

AC UPS
An AC UPS can power the Pi through its normal adapter and may also cover the router, modem, and switch. Confirm that the specific unit’s input range and outlet standard suit your local installation, and check how its output behaves during transfer. In India, verify these details on the exact unit and confirm local stock, warranty, and replacement-battery availability with the seller; these can vary and are not established by the example specifications above.
Compare candidates against the whole setup
- Regulated output voltage under load, and continuous and peak current ratings.
- Battery chemistry, documented usable energy, and runtime data at a load close to yours.
- Transfer gap and brownout behavior.
- Low-battery notification, automatic shutdown support, and enough reserve to shut down safely.
- Connectors and compatibility with your Pi model and peripherals.
- Whether the router, modem, and switch can also be powered.
- India mains compatibility, availability, warranty, and replacement battery options.
3. Establish a stable baseline and estimate runtime
- Power the setup from a suitable supply first. Use a sound cable and the recommended supply rating for the Pi model. Check that the board, camera, storage, and networking equipment behave normally before introducing the UPS.
- Measure or estimate the complete load while live. Run the actual FFmpeg workload with the intended camera or capture device and peripherals active. A wall-side measurement includes the power adapter’s conversion losses; a DC measurement must include the loads powered from that supply.
- Compare like with like. Use the UPS’s documented usable battery energy and account for conversion losses. Leave battery reserve for a controlled shutdown rather than planning to use every last bit of stored energy.
- Use a candidate only if its output can handle the measured load. A Pi’s recommended supply rating and a UPS’s maximum current rating are not measurements of the stream’s consumption or runtime.
Raspberry Pi documentation warns that sudden power-downs can corrupt storage, and that poor-quality supplies or cables can cause unpredictable behavior. On models since Pi B+ (2014), excluding the Zero range, its low-voltage detection threshold is below 4.63 V (±5%). Treat this as a warning threshold, not a target operating voltage. 4. Configure and test the YouTube stream
A UPS does not guarantee that a Pi can encode any chosen resolution or frame rate. Test the intended FFmpeg settings on the target board under representative load. YouTube Live’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, and constant bitrate encoding; it recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS to encrypt data through Google’s servers. Its advanced settings list stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Check the current YouTube Live encoder settings when configuring your stream.
- Set up the YouTube live stream and obtain its stream key through YouTube Studio.
- Configure FFmpeg for the supported ingest protocol and the encoding settings YouTube lists for your stream. Confirm the resolution and frame rate are sustainable on your specific Pi.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public screenshot or command history that other users can access.
- Start the stream with the complete camera, storage, and network chain active. Check for undervoltage warnings, capture errors, network interruptions, and encoding overload before relying on the UPS.
5. Simulate an outage and verify recovery
- With a representative stream running, interrupt mains power to the UPS in a controlled test. Confirm that the Pi does not reboot and the UPS transfer does not interrupt the stream.
- Check that every required device remains powered, including the router, modem, and switch. If any link in the chain goes down, the stream may stop even if the Pi stays on.
- Test the low-battery behavior. Verify that any status signal and shutdown software work, and that the system has enough reserve to stop streaming and shut down cleanly.
- Restore mains power and confirm that the Pi boots safely. Check whether your intended streaming setup resumes automatically or needs a manual restart; do not assume reconnection behavior without testing it.
Common problems and fixes
- The Pi reboots when mains fails: the UPS may not transfer cleanly, may be undersized, or may have an incompatible output or connector. Test with the full measured load and check the candidate’s transfer and current specifications.
- Undervoltage warnings appear during normal operation: inspect the supply, cable, connectors, and UPS output under load. Raspberry Pi notes cable loss can lower voltage at the board; a nominal 5 V label does not prove adequate voltage at the Pi.
- The Pi stays on but YouTube goes offline: check whether the router, modem, switch, camera, or capture device also lost power, and inspect network stability during transfer.
- The stream ends before the UPS is empty: investigate network interruption, FFmpeg errors, encoding capacity, and YouTube ingest settings. Power backup alone cannot correct those failures.
- The storage will not boot cleanly after an outage: abrupt power loss can corrupt storage. Test low-battery signaling and clean shutdown support, and keep shutdown reserve.
- Runtime is much shorter than expected: compare against measured whole-system load and documented usable battery energy, including conversion losses. Do not infer runtime from cell count, nominal capacity alone, or maximum output current.
