To use a VPN with a PS5, PS4, or Xbox, connect the console to a router configured as a VPN client. These consoles generally do not run commercial VPN apps themselves. First confirm that your router supports outbound VPN-client connections—not just VPN passthrough or a VPN server—and that its firmware supports a protocol and configuration from your VPN provider. A router VPN can encrypt traffic leaving the covered devices and replace their public-facing IP with the VPN server’s IP, but it can also raise latency or make multiplayer NAT more restrictive.

Choose the right setup method

A router-based VPN is usually the most practical permanent home setup: configure the VPN once, then connect the console to that router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. If your current router cannot run a VPN client, you can add a separate VPN-capable router, share a VPN connection from a computer, or use Smart DNS for some location-dependent services. Those options do not provide the same protection.

Method Best for Key limitation
VPN client on your existing router A permanent setup when the exact router and firmware support your VPN provider’s configuration. May route every device through the VPN unless the router supports per-device rules.
Dedicated or second VPN router A simpler setup or a separate network for the console and selected devices. Requires extra hardware; connecting it behind an ISP router can create double NAT.
Windows or Mac connection sharing Occasional use or testing before buying a router. The computer must remain on, and sharing depends on its operating system and network adapters.
Smart DNS Some streaming or location-routing use cases where encryption is not needed. Does not encrypt console traffic or fully hide the console’s public IP.

NordVPN documents router and computer-sharing methods for consoles in its gaming-console setup guide. Surfshark also provides PlayStation setup instructions. Smart DNS is not a VPN: ExpressVPN says its MediaStreamer option does not encrypt traffic or hide the IP address in its PlayStation guide.

Check router compatibility before changing settings

“VPN” in a router menu can mean several different things. For this setup, you need a VPN client: the router creates an outbound connection to your commercial VPN provider.

  • VPN client: The feature needed to send selected router traffic through a VPN provider.
  • VPN server: Lets you connect back to your home network while away. This is a different function.
  • VPN passthrough: Allows a device running its own VPN app to pass VPN traffic through the router. It does not let the router run the VPN itself.
  • Smart DNS: Changes DNS-based location handling but does not create an encrypted VPN tunnel.

Check the router’s exact model, hardware revision, firmware version and region. Then verify that it supports an outbound client using a protocol your provider offers—often OpenVPN or WireGuard—and can import the provider’s configuration. If you want only the console covered, look for policy-based routing or device groups. A kill switch, custom DNS options, adequate processor performance and a manufacturer-supported recovery method are also useful.

Many ISP-issued routers lack client configuration or have restricted firmware. NordVPN’s router instructions specify that a router needs OpenVPN-client support for the configuration it describes; its router setup guide is a place to check provider requirements. Do not infer client support from a router’s VPN-server feature. TP-Link availability varies by model, firmware and region; consult the exact model’s manual and its VPN setup resources.

Record a baseline before enabling the VPN

Save the current state so you can tell whether the VPN caused a change and roll back without guessing.

  • Write down the router model, hardware revision, firmware and ISP modem/router arrangement.
  • Record the console’s current IP settings, NAT result, download and upload speeds, and typical latency or multiplayer behavior.
  • Note any existing port-forwarding, UPnP, DNS or other custom routing settings before changing them.
  • On PS5, run Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection and record the displayed NAT type. The path is documented in this PS5 port-forwarding guide. On PS4 and Xbox, use the console’s built-in network test; menu labels can vary by system software and console generation.

Configure the VPN client on your router

Menu names and controls differ among router brands and firmware releases. Follow a guide for the exact model and firmware, and use your VPN provider’s official manual-configuration portal rather than configuration files from forums or third-party repositories.

  1. Confirm the provider’s requirements. Check which protocol, server locations, credentials and router models it supports. Manual router setup may require a separate configuration username and password, an .ovpn file, a WireGuard configuration or key, or another authorization step. A normal account password may not be the correct credential.
  2. Select and download a server profile. Choose a nearby location to start. If the provider and router offer a choice, UDP is a reasonable first option for gaming; use TCP only if UDP is blocked or unreliable. A more distant server usually adds latency.
  3. Log in to the router’s administration page. Connect by Ethernet or Wi-Fi, then use the local address and sign-in details in the router’s manual or manufacturer support page. There is no single local address that applies to every router.
  4. Open the client settings. Look for a section named VPN Client, OpenVPN Client, WireGuard Client, or similar. A menu named only VPN Server or VPN Passthrough is not the feature required here.
  5. Import the profile and enter required details. Depending on the interface, upload the configuration file, enter manual-setup credentials, paste a certificate or key, and choose DNS or automatic-reconnect options. Change advanced routing settings only when the provider or router documentation calls for them.
  6. Save and connect. Activate the profile, then wait for the router’s status to show that the tunnel is connected. Confirm that the router has an active VPN connection before moving the console onto it.
  7. Choose which devices use the tunnel. If the router supports policy rules, assign only the console or a console-and-streaming group. Routing the entire network is simpler, but it can affect work devices, banking, printers, smart-home equipment and local services. On routers without per-device routing, all clients may use the same VPN path.
  8. Connect the console normally. Join the VPN-enabled router’s Wi-Fi network or connect by Ethernet, using the console’s standard automatic or easy network setup. Do not add a proxy unless your VPN provider specifically instructs you to.

ASUSWRT

On supported ASUS routers, log in to the web interface, open the VPN client area, add a profile, select a supported connection type, import the provider’s .ovpn file where applicable, enter required credentials, then save and activate the profile. Assign the console to that profile if the router firmware offers device or policy routing. ASUS describes adding a VPN client and importing a provider profile in its VPN Client setup instructions. Available protocols and labels depend on the model and firmware.

TP-Link and other router firmware

Do not assume every TP-Link, Netgear, Linksys or mesh router can act as a VPN client. Stock firmware may support no client, only certain protocols, or a provider-specific integration. Check the manual for the precise hardware revision and firmware. Provider support is similarly model-dependent: ExpressVPN’s supported-devices page lists router families and manual configuration options, but a brand appearing there does not guarantee support for every model.

Third-party firmware such as DD-WRT, Tomato or OpenWrt can add configuration options on compatible hardware, but flashing the wrong build can disable the router and may affect warranty or manufacturer support. Confirm the exact device revision and recovery procedure before considering it. Router processor capacity also matters: VPN encryption can limit throughput on lower-powered hardware.

Dedicated VPN router

A dedicated router can provide a separate VPN-enabled Wi-Fi network or cover a household without flashing the primary router. For example, ExpressVPN’s Aircove setup involves connecting the unit to a modem or existing router, joining its Wi-Fi network and completing setup through expressvpnrouter.com; see the current Aircove setup guide. A subscription is required for its VPN functionality, so confirm current availability and terms in your region before purchasing.

Handle an ISP modem/router or double NAT

If your ISP supplies a modem/router combo and you add a VPN router, the second router often connects from a LAN port on the ISP device to the new router’s WAN or Internet port. This can work, but both devices may perform NAT, creating double NAT that can complicate console multiplayer and port forwarding.

Possible arrangements include using a separate modem and VPN router, placing the ISP gateway in bridge mode so the VPN router becomes the main router, or using a carefully configured DMZ for the VPN router. The right choice depends on the ISP device and network. Do not place the console itself in a DMZ or disable the router firewall as a routine fix. For setup details on DHCP, static IP, PPPoE, bridge mode and DMZ, consult the router maker and ISP; ExpressVPN also documents its router-to-internet connection options.

On an apartment, hotel, dorm or managed network, an extra router may be blocked, require MAC-address registration or a captive-portal sign-in, or violate network rules. Confirm that the network permits the setup before changing hardware.

Test the connection and gaming experience

A router dashboard saying “connected” only confirms the tunnel status; it does not prove that the console is routed through it or that multiplayer works well. Check the full path:

  1. Confirm that the console has an IP address and completes its built-in internet connection test.
  2. Check that a laptop or phone routed through the same VPN profile sees the VPN server’s public IP. This verifies that device’s route, not every console service.
  3. If privacy is the goal, run a DNS leak test on a connected device and confirm that DNS behavior matches your provider’s instructions.
  4. Record the console’s NAT result, then test multiplayer, party chat, downloads and in-game stability.
  5. Compare speed and latency with the baseline you recorded before the VPN. For a fair comparison, use the same console, connection type, server region and test conditions where possible.

Use Ethernet for competitive play and troubleshooting when practical. A VPN adds an encrypted network hop; latency and throughput depend on the VPN server, route, protocol, router hardware, ISP and local Wi-Fi. WireGuard may be a good performance option when both provider and router support it, but it is not guaranteed to be faster on every setup. A VPN cannot repair poor Wi-Fi, bufferbloat, an overloaded ISP connection or an underpowered router. If play is worse with the tunnel active, use the normal connection for gaming.

Fix strict NAT, failed matchmaking or lost internet

NAT determines how devices behind your router communicate with the internet, and console platforms describe NAT status differently. A VPN can change the route and shared network address seen by the console; it does not guarantee a more open NAT. Some providers do not allow inbound port forwarding, and an ISP using carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) may also prevent inbound connections. ExpressVPN explains that CGNAT can block port forwarding and describes the limitations of port forwarding in its router setup.

Work through the checks in order

  1. Disable the router VPN and repeat the console network and multiplayer tests. If the problem disappears, the tunnel or its routing is implicated.
  2. Reconnect to another server in the same country, then try a nearby server. A distant endpoint can increase latency.
  3. If UDP fails or will not connect, try TCP if both the router and provider offer it. TCP is a fallback, not a general performance upgrade.
  4. Test over Ethernet to rule out Wi-Fi instability.
  5. Verify that the console is actually assigned to the VPN profile and check whether a kill switch or fail-closed rule is blocking its traffic.
  6. Check whether the ISP gateway and VPN router are both routing traffic. Double NAT can affect multiplayer; ask the ISP about bridge mode or consult both devices’ manuals before changing their roles.
  7. Ask the provider whether the chosen server supports inbound port forwarding, and ask the ISP whether the connection uses CGNAT. Do not assume forwarding is available end to end.
  8. Remove obsolete or unnecessary manual port-forwarding rules before adding new ones. Do not open broad port ranges or disable the firewall as a first response.

Port forwarding helps only when the router, ISP and VPN provider support the required inbound path, and the rule is configured on the correct device. ExpressVPN notes that ports forwarded through its router setup are outside the VPN tunnel, so that forwarded traffic is not VPN-protected. See its port-forwarding documentation before relying on this approach.

If the router has no client option

Check the exact model and hardware revision, then look up the firmware version and manufacturer’s current manual. A client option may be absent because the router supports only server mode, the ISP has restricted its firmware, the feature differs by revision, or the provider’s protocol is unsupported. Update firmware only as recommended by the manufacturer. If support is unavailable, use a second VPN-capable router or a computer hotspot rather than assuming passthrough will run the VPN for the console.

If the VPN profile will not connect

  • Recheck that the profile matches the router’s supported protocol and that the server configuration is current.
  • Confirm that you used the provider’s manual-setup credentials when required, rather than assuming the regular account password works.
  • Make sure the router’s date and time are correct and that ordinary WAN and DNS access work with the VPN disabled.
  • Check whether the ISP or firewall blocks the selected protocol and whether the router has enough processing capacity.
  • Consult the provider’s status information in case an endpoint has been retired. For ASUS, the official VPN Client guidance recommends checking the connection type and firmware; follow its troubleshooting steps for the exact model.

If the console loses internet access

  1. Stop or disable the VPN profile and confirm ordinary internet access returns.
  2. Check whether a kill switch is intentionally blocking traffic when the tunnel is down.
  3. Remove the failed profile and import a fresh configuration from the provider if needed.
  4. Try a nearby server, then restart the router and console.
  5. If you changed DNS or routing manually, restore the settings you recorded before setup and retest.

Use a computer hotspot for a temporary setup

Sharing a VPN-protected connection from a Windows PC or Mac is useful when the router lacks client support or when you want to test the idea before buying hardware. The computer must connect to the VPN and share that connection with the console; operating-system controls and adapter support differ, so follow the VPN provider’s current instructions for your computer. NordVPN documents console connection-sharing options in its console guide, and ExpressVPN describes PlayStation methods in its PlayStation guide.

The PC has to remain on, and it becomes another part of the network to troubleshoot. Ethernet is usually a more dependable connection between the computer and console than relying on a shared Wi-Fi adapter.

What a router VPN does—and does not—protect

Only devices routed through the VPN profile are covered. The public-facing IP for their internet traffic becomes the VPN server’s address, and the connection between those devices and the VPN provider is encrypted. That can reduce exposure of your home IP to some peers or direct IP-based harassment, but it is not a complete anti-DDoS solution and does not protect against attacks originating on your local network. It also does not encrypt communications between devices on the same home LAN; ExpressVPN explains this limit in its router FAQ.

A VPN does not guarantee anonymity, lower ping, faster downloads, access to a region-locked game or service, or a particular NAT type. It may change how a service routes or treats a connection; check the game and platform terms and applicable laws before using it for location-related purposes. Do not assume the tunnel protects devices that bypass the configured router or use another network.

Restore the original connection when needed

  1. Disconnect or disable the VPN client profile in the router dashboard.
  2. Confirm that the console has ordinary internet access and repeat its network test.
  3. Restore any DNS, device-routing or port-forwarding settings you changed, using your baseline notes.
  4. Restart the router and console if either retains the failed route, then check NAT, multiplayer and latency again.
