You can use a Windows VPS to run an encoder that sends a live stream to YouTube, but a VPS alone does not guarantee that the encoder will survive a remote-desktop disconnect, server maintenance, or restart. The reliable setup is to create a YouTube stream, enter its current RTMPS address and stream key in an encoder, verify the stream, and confirm with your VPS provider how sessions, reboots, and sustained outbound traffic are handled.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the activation and stream-creation workflow.
- A Windows VPS with remote access and an encoder you can install. Ask the provider which Windows edition or image is supplied, what licensing is included, and how remote access and account security are configured.
- The video or input you intend to stream, plus enough host capacity and network allowance for the encoder workload. There is no documented universal Windows VPS minimum for OBS or another encoder.
- A stream key. Treat it like a password: only enter it into your intended encoder and do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or public text.
1. Create or schedule the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab to create a stream, or the Manage tab to schedule one.
- Open the stream settings and copy the current server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Do not reuse a memorized ingest address: use the value displayed in Live Control Room.
If live streaming has not previously been enabled on the channel, allow for the possible activation delay before troubleshooting your encoder or VPS.
2. Provision and access the Windows VPS
Choose a host plan based on the actual work: encoding resolution, frame rate, codec, number of concurrent streams, and the provider’s sustained outbound-transfer capacity. Microsoft’s general guidance on sizing virtual machines for Remote Desktop Services is workload-dependent and is not an OBS or YouTube encoder sizing benchmark. It does not establish a minimum vCPU, memory, or bandwidth specification for this task.
Before relying on the VPS unattended, ask the provider to clarify:

- Which Windows edition or server image is supplied, and whether its licensing is included.
- How remote administration is enabled and secured, and what happens to applications when a remote session disconnects or signs out.
- How planned maintenance and reboots are announced, and whether any recovery or startup controls are available.
- CPU allocation, memory, disk capacity, server location, and any limits or charges for sustained outbound traffic.
Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guidance describes remote access and edition considerations for Windows PCs; it is not a deployment guide for every provider’s Windows VPS image. Check the specific image and access rules with your provider.
3. Install an encoder and enter YouTube’s connection details
An encoder packages the video and audio for delivery to YouTube. OBS Studio is one possible encoder; use its current official documentation for installation and software-specific controls, since Windows VPS installation and persistence behavior depend on the particular image and configuration.

- Install your chosen encoder on the VPS and open its streaming or output settings.
- Choose YouTube RTMPS if the encoder offers a YouTube service preset. Otherwise, copy the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room. YouTube says to reveal the RTMPS URL from Stream settings using the lock icon when needed.
- Paste the current stream key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Keep it private.
- Save the settings, start the encoder, and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health feedback before treating the stream as live and stable.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted connection. Its streaming troubleshooting guidance advises checking that the server URL uses the correct protocol and server, and confirming that the encoder supports RTMPS. Google’s developer documentation states that RTMPS connections use port 443 and TLS; encoder implementations also need to authenticate the server hostname correctly. 4. Set encoder output to match the source and connection
Use output settings suitable for the source and the VPS’s available upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists these constraints and recommendations:

- Rate control: CBR (constant bit rate).
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: a two-second interval is recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Video formats and color: H.264, H.265, or AV1; square pixels; SDR Rec. 709.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Connection: RTMP or RTMPS, with RTMPS preferred.
These are encoder-output guidelines, not a VPS capacity guarantee. If the preview stutters or stream health degrades, check the actual encoder load, output settings, and sustained network capacity rather than assuming a generic plan label proves the host is sufficient. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the current recommended profiles and audio values.
5. Make the stream recoverable before leaving it unattended
Remote Desktop is an administration method, not an uptime guarantee. Do not assume that merely closing or disconnecting a remote desktop session will keep the encoder running; session behavior varies with the Windows image, provider policy, and application configuration. Nor do the YouTube connection instructions provide a verified auto-start or auto-restart recipe for a particular encoder on a VPS.

- Set up a recovery approach that is appropriate for the exact Windows image and encoder, using the provider’s documented controls and the encoder’s current documentation.
- Rehearse a remote-session disconnect, a VPS restart, and an encoder reconnection while watching the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators.
- Only depend on unattended operation after you have observed the behavior you need under those conditions.
Continuous operation also depends on the VPS provider’s service terms and network capacity. Review sustained outbound transfer limits, maintenance policy, and any applicable resource restrictions before choosing a plan; the cited Microsoft VM sizing guidance does not establish VPS uptime or streaming reliability.

YouTube Help says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That rule does not promise that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be saved as one automatically archived video. If keeping a longer broadcast matters, plan a separate recording or segmentation approach and verify it against YouTube’s current guidance rather than relying on automatic archiving.
