You can use Windows PowerShell to launch and supervise an encoder for a continuous YouTube stream, but PowerShell does not itself rotate video files or send a live feed. The encoder must handle the media playlist and send it to YouTube’s server URL with your stream key. The available official documentation supports that overall workflow, but it does not establish a tested FFmpeg rotation command or a complete crash-recovery script; validate those pieces on your Windows and encoder versions before leaving a stream unattended.
How the setup fits together
A 24/7 stream has three separate jobs: YouTube receives a live audio/video feed, an encoder produces and sends that feed, and PowerShell can launch the encoder and help manage when it runs. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a channel’s recurring 24/7 feed from an individual scheduled live event. Choose the approach that fits whether you want one ongoing channel feed or separately managed broadcasts. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
Playlist rotation is primarily an encoder and media-compatibility problem, not a PowerShell feature. The official sources cited here explain YouTube encoder setup and Windows process/task management, but do not verify a particular encoder’s playlist syntax, seamless transitions, or recovery behavior.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
- Enable live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before planning a launch. Follow the current steps in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, then set the event information and visibility appropriate to your channel. A scheduled stream may require you to select Go live after the encoder preview appears; starting the encoder does not necessarily make a scheduled event public by itself.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. The encoder uses these to send its feed to YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, repository, or log. If it is exposed, use the current Live Control Room controls to replace or reset it before continuing.
- Check stream status in Live Control Room. Start with a short test and verify that YouTube receives the encoder feed and shows a preview before relying on unattended operation.
Plan the playlist before automating it
Choose continuous feed or separate events
A recurring channel feed and a scheduled live event are different operating models in YouTube’s API documentation. Decide which one you need before building automation: an ongoing feed suits a continuously available channel stream, while separate broadcasts give you distinct event sessions to schedule and manage.

Check the media and rotation behavior
Confirm with your chosen encoder that it can read the intended files or playlist in sequence and continue after the final item. Test the actual media files, audio, and transition behavior; the YouTube and Microsoft references below do not establish which formats or playlist options a particular encoder supports. Do not assume that rotation will be seamless or that every file will behave identically.
Decide what you need to archive
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This is a YouTube platform rule, not a guarantee that an indefinitely running feed will yield one complete archive. If you need recordings, plan sessions and verify the resulting archives in YouTube Studio; an uninterrupted feed and a set of retained recordings are separate requirements.

Use PowerShell to launch and supervise the encoder
PowerShell can start a local process with specified arguments, working directory, wait behavior, and output redirection. Windows ScheduledTasks cmdlets can register a task definition and start a registered background task. Those mechanisms can support startup and recovery designs, but registering a task alone does not prove the encoder, playlist, network connection, or YouTube ingest will recover correctly.
- Identify the encoder and its configuration. Record the installed executable path, the media/playlist configuration supported by that encoder, the working directory it requires, and the YouTube server URL and key. Keep credentials out of shared files and captured output.
- Run a short manual test first. Launch the encoder from the same Windows account and working directory you intend to use unattended. Confirm the encoder is reading the intended sequence and that Live Control Room receives a preview. Complete any required scheduled-event Go live action in Studio.
- Use Start-Process for process launch. Configure the executable, its arguments, working directory, and any output redirection deliberately. Microsoft documents these options, but the correct arguments depend on the encoder and are not supplied by YouTube’s setup instructions. See Microsoft’s Start-Process documentation.
- Choose an explicit unattended launch policy. For example, a Windows scheduled task can be configured for a startup trigger or another deliberate trigger. Configure the task to run under the account that can access the encoder and media, then test it after sign-out or reboot as relevant to your use case. Microsoft documents task registration and starting registered tasks at Register-ScheduledTask.
- Test failure handling before calling it recovery. Stop the encoder intentionally and observe what happens. Then test the failure cases you care about, such as a reboot or lost connection, and confirm whether the task starts a replacement process, whether the encoder can reconnect, and whether YouTube receives the feed again. A launch-at-startup task is not by itself a proof of restart-after-crash or recovery-after-network-loss.
- Keep operational records. Where appropriate, redirect diagnostic output to a controlled location and check it alongside the encoder and YouTube status. Ensure logs do not expose the stream key. Decide how often someone will check the machine, storage, network, task status, and YouTube stream.
There is no FFmpeg command in this guide because the cited sources do not verify current FFmpeg playlist/concat behavior or a complete Windows implementation. Before using any encoder-specific script for a public 24/7 channel, validate playlist iteration, supported input files, interruptions, logging, credential handling, preview/Go live behavior, and archive expectations on the exact Windows and encoder versions you plan to run.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube shows no preview: Confirm the encoder is running, the server URL and stream key correspond to the intended stream, and the encoder is actually producing a feed. Recheck the stream in Live Control Room.
- The scheduled event has a preview but is not live: Check whether YouTube Studio is waiting for an explicit Go live action for that event.
- The stream starts but the playlist stops or skips: Investigate the encoder’s own playlist rules and the files it is reading. PowerShell process launch does not establish playlist compatibility or end-of-list behavior.
- The encoder exits and stays down: A scheduled task configured only to run at startup may not relaunch a process that exits later. Test the chosen trigger and restart policy, and do not treat task registration as proof of recovery.
- The stream does not return after an internet interruption: Verify whether the encoder reconnects and whether YouTube accepts the resumed feed. The cited documentation does not establish automatic recovery from a lost connection.
- You do not get the archive you expected: Check the session length and the resulting recordings in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s cited guidance covers automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not an unlimited single archive.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Replace or reset it using the current controls in Live Control Room, then update the encoder configuration and confirm the new feed works.
Copyright and channel policy still apply
Having permission to use an encoder or automate a playlist does not grant rights to the music, video, or other material in that playlist. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current rules and any rights-holder restrictions before scheduling continuous playback. A technically functioning stream can still be interrupted or face channel consequences if its content violates applicable requirements.
