You can run a YouTube livestream with a still image and audio by combining both in an encoder, connecting that encoder to YouTube Studio with a stream URL and key, then starting and monitoring the broadcast in Live Control Room. The encoder does the combining; YouTube’s setup guide covers the connection and broadcast workflow, but the exact scene controls depend on the encoder you choose.
Before you set up the stream
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current help guidance also sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16. Check eligibility before preparing a long broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the details.
- Choose an image and audio you have permission to use for a livestream. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to ensure you have the rights to the audio and video in your stream. A static image does not make copyrighted music safe to use; unauthorized material can still lead to claims or interruptions. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- Decide whether you need a scheduled watch page, an archive, or continuous operation beyond a single broadcast. Scheduling can create a watch page viewers can visit and set reminders for.
How to set up a 24/7 stream with a static image and audio
- Choose an encoder. YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows. In your chosen encoder, add the still image and audio as sources in one scene or equivalent composition, and configure the audio or media source to repeat if you want it to continue. The controls and exact steps vary by encoder; YouTube’s general setup page does not prescribe a particular static-image-and-audio recipe.
- Prepare and test your media. Check that the image is legible at the output size, the audio plays at a suitable level, and any repeat behavior works as intended. Test with representative audio before going live. A still picture cannot demonstrate motion handling, but you can still check audio continuity, picture quality, and encoder health. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips.
- Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Create → Go Live, then use the Stream tab to create an encoder stream. Alternatively, schedule one from Manage if you want to share a watch page in advance and let viewers set reminders. The available controls may change; follow the labels shown in your Studio account. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- Copy the connection details into your encoder. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed. Use YouTube’s RTMPS server URL when your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and encoder settings guidance.
- Set output quality to match your source and connection. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate your encoder and upload connection can sustain. YouTube publishes bitrate ranges by resolution, codec, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate suitable for every setup. Consult its encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution recommendations rather than guessing or copying a setting for a different output.
- Start sending the feed and inspect the preview. Start streaming from the encoder, then wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the image is present, audio is audible and continuous, and YouTube reports healthy incoming video before selecting Go live.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on stream health and audio/video quality after going live. A 24/7 setup still needs monitoring; YouTube’s published workflow does not promise uninterrupted uptime or specify an automatic recovery system. Use YouTube’s livestreaming tips for its testing and monitoring guidance.
Plan for the archive and long-running operation
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not extend that promise to a continuous 24-hour broadcast, so do not rely on an automatic archive for an uninterrupted day-long stream. If you need a recording, plan a separate way to capture or preserve the content, and decide how you will handle the broadcast if the encoder or connection stops. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Running the encoder locally or in the cloud
A local encoder gives you direct control over the scene and media, but the computer, encoder, and internet connection must stay available for the broadcast to continue. A dedicated mini PC is optional, not a YouTube requirement; YouTube does not specify a minimum computer for this use or say a separate machine is better than an existing suitable computer.
A cloud service is another way to keep a YouTube stream running without leaving an encoder computer on at home. YouTube’s help result names Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, but the cited result does not establish current pricing, limits, or reliability, so check its current terms before choosing it.
