You can loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live by running FFmpeg on a cloud VM, using the ingest URL and stream key for your YouTube live event. The VM—not your home computer—plays and sends the video. The example below is a command template, not a tested deployment: choose output settings for your source, check your server’s CPU and data-transfer costs, and test the stream before relying on it unattended.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel and a live event created in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the event UI for any account or channel eligibility requirements; eligibility varies and has not been checked for your account.
  • A prerecorded video file stored on the VM, or a way to transfer it there.
  • A Linux cloud VM with enough CPU capacity to encode your chosen output in real time, enough disk for the video and operating system, and enough included outbound transfer for your planned bitrate and stream duration.
  • An FFmpeg build with the video encoder and RTMPS support you intend to use.
  • The event’s ingest server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password.

This workflow plays an uploaded file; it does not broadcast a live camera. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, for Live ingest. Use the server URL and key shown for your own event, not credentials copied from an example. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide explains the endpoint requirements.

Choose a VM by total cost, not just its monthly price

A low advertised VM price can be misleading for a nonstop stream because outbound transfer accumulates continuously. As a concrete price reference, AWS’s Lightsail pricing page listed a Linux/Unix bundle at $5 USD per month when checked on October 4, 2026, with 0.5 GB memory, two vCPUs and 20 GB SSD. The page lists 1 TB of transfer for the bundle, but AWS says Mumbai plans include half the published bundle allowance, making the allowance for this example about 0.5 TB. AWS lists Mumbai overage for qualifying excess outbound transfer at $0.13 USD per GB. These mutable figures and terms should be rechecked in the Lightsail pricing page and AWS transfer documentation before launch.

At a constant 4 Mbps, the video payload alone is about 1.8 decimal GB per hour before protocol overhead. That works out to about 43.2 decimal GB per day, or about 1,296 decimal GB over 30 uninterrupted days. These are bitrate-based estimates, not provider quotes or measured traffic; audio, protocol overhead, retransmissions, uptime and provider metering affect actual usage. The 4 Mbps figure is YouTube’s recommendation for H.264 at 240p–720p and 30 fps, not a universal quality setting.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Because that 30-day estimate exceeds the Mumbai example’s roughly 0.5 TB allowance, check how your provider meters transfer and price excess outbound traffic. You can choose a plan with more included egress or reduce resolution or bitrate if that meets your viewers’ needs. Compare plans on total monthly cost, CPU headroom for your exact source, storage, regional availability and route stability to YouTube ingest—not on VM location alone.

The listed Lightsail CPU and memory do not establish that the VM can encode every video in real time. Source codec, resolution, frame rate, scaling and FFmpeg build all affect CPU use. AWS notes that its compute-optimized plans serve compute-intensive tasks such as video encoding, but that does not establish a minimum size for this particular workflow. Test the actual video on the instance you intend to use and monitor CPU and stream health. AWS’s plan listings describe its available resources.

Oracle’s documentation says Always Free resources are eligible in a tenancy’s home region. It does not establish that a suitable free shape is currently available to a new account in Mumbai, or that its current bandwidth terms suit an uninterrupted stream. Treat it as an option to verify against your own account and region, not as a guaranteed free Indian streaming server. See Oracle Always Free resources.

Create the YouTube live event and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create the live event you want to use. Set its title, visibility and schedule in YouTube.
  2. Copy the event’s ingest server URL and stream key from its encoder or streaming settings. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint, as YouTube recommends.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public repository, screenshot, shared command history or publicly accessible log. Limit access to the account and VM, use restrictive file permissions for configuration that contains the key, and rotate it if exposed.
  4. Keep the event open in Live Control Room so you can confirm that it receives video and audio and review stream-health messages during your test.

If FFmpeg reports an SSL error or times out, YouTube’s RTMPS guidance identifies an incorrect server name, port or SSL setup as possible causes. Recheck the event’s endpoint and confirm you are connecting with RTMPS rather than assuming every RTMP address is interchangeable. YouTube RTMPS ingestion documentation.

Install FFmpeg and inspect the video

Install FFmpeg using the package channel or another trusted distribution route for the exact operating-system image you chose. Package contents differ: confirm that your build exposes the encoder you plan to use—commonly libx264 for H.264—and supports the RTMPS/FLV output path. There is no single installation command that is correct for every Linux image, and a package named FFmpeg does not guarantee identical codec or TLS support across distributions.

Before streaming, inspect the file’s video and audio streams, frame rate, resolution, codecs and duration. Those details determine whether you can pass the streams through unchanged or should re-encode them. Stream-copying can reduce CPU use, but only works when the source streams, container and timing are compatible with the output and YouTube ingest. Re-encoding provides control over bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, scaling and audio, at the cost of CPU.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include the following; these are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that your VM can encode at that rate reliably.

Output profile YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps in its advanced settings. Pick the profile that matches your intended resolution and frame rate, then check both CPU capacity and transfer allowance. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers; your outgoing profile is the input you send to YouTube. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its full, current guidance.

Run FFmpeg as a looping live source

The following shell command is a schematic template, not a verified YouTube command. It follows the loop options in an AWS IVS FFmpeg example, but that example targets IVS, not YouTube. Replace the placeholders with your own file and event endpoint, confirm options against your FFmpeg build, and test with the target event before relying on it.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY'

This example’s 4 Mbps target corresponds to YouTube’s recommendation for H.264 at 240p–720p and 30 fps. Its GOP settings use 60 frames, which represents about two seconds only if the outgoing video is actually 30 fps. If the source or desired output uses a different frame rate, set the frame rate and GOP accordingly; add scaling or other filters only when your chosen output needs them. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate rather than copying the example’s value blindly.

The stream key shown in the command is a placeholder. Avoid pasting a real key into commands that will remain in shell history or be captured by process monitoring. For an unattended service, store credentials in a suitably protected configuration mechanism, limit permissions and access, and test how your chosen service manager handles secrets and logs.

Test the stream and keep it running safely

  1. Start with a test event or a short test window using the exact source file, FFmpeg build, server and command you plan to use.
  2. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives both audio and video. Check for stream-health warnings and listen for the expected audio; a process running on the VM is not proof that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.
  3. Watch CPU utilization and network transfer while the stream runs. If CPU is saturated or frames are not being delivered reliably, test a less demanding output profile or a VM with more suitable compute capacity.
  4. For continuous operation, configure a service manager to start the process after a reboot, a restart policy for unexpected exits, log rotation and an alerting method. Validate these choices for your operating system and service manager; settings differ by distribution.
  5. Test recovery from a process exit and a brief network interruption. Reconnection behavior depends on FFmpeg, the network and YouTube ingest, so validate any reconnect flags or wrapper logic with your exact setup rather than assuming a universal command will recover cleanly.
  6. Recalculate monthly transfer and cost using the selected bitrate and actual planned uptime. Review the provider’s usage and billing console after launch.

YouTube advises testing with representative movement and audio and monitoring stream health during the event. A static or silent test may not expose problems that appear in the actual video. The stream must also comply with YouTube’s copyright rules: use material you have the rights to stream, including music and other audio. A loop that runs technically is not evidence that the content is authorized or eligible for monetization.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube never detects the stream: Check that FFmpeg is still running, the event is the one whose key you copied, and the RTMPS URL and key are correct. Check network access to the endpoint and whether the build supports the required TLS and output path.
  • SSL errors or connection timeouts: Recheck the RTMPS server name and port shown for the event, and confirm the URL is the RTMPS endpoint. YouTube lists an incorrect server name, port or SSL setup as possible causes in its RTMPS ingestion guide.
  • Video arrives but audio does not: Inspect whether the source contains an audio stream and whether FFmpeg maps and encodes it as expected. Confirm the event preview and stream-health messages before changing unrelated network settings.
  • Encoding falls behind or the picture stutters: Check CPU usage, source resolution and frame rate, and whether filters or re-encoding are adding load. Test a lower-demand output profile or a VM with more compute capacity; do not assume the smallest advertised plan can encode your source.
  • The stream works but transfer charges rise: Compare actual metered transfer with the bitrate-based estimate and your plan’s regional allowance. Audio, protocol overhead, uptime and provider billing rules can increase or alter usage; verify the provider’s current terms.
  • The stream stops after a reboot or FFmpeg exits: Check service-manager startup and restart behavior, then inspect protected logs for the underlying error. Avoid writing the stream key to a public log; rotate it if it has been exposed.
