To run a YouTube lofi radio stream from a cloud server, host an encoder such as FFmpeg on a machine that stays online, feed it music and visuals you have permission to use, and send the encoded stream to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The setup can keep broadcasting while your own computer is off, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service: the server, encoder, network connection, or YouTube ingestion can still fail.
How the cloud-streaming setup works
The cloud server is the computer that remains online and runs the encoder. The basic signal path is:
Rights-cleared music and visuals → encoder process on the cloud server → YouTube Live ingestion
FFmpeg is one possible encoder; it is not a YouTube requirement. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview identifies FFmpeg as an encoder program. YouTube describes an encoder this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” (YouTube Help, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.)

This is a deployment outline, not a tested server recipe. The available guidance does not establish a suitable VPS size, cloud provider, or price. Those depend on the resolution and frame rate, whether the server must encode or can pass through pre-encoded media, workload, region, uptime needs, and outbound-data charges.
Prepare the channel and live destination
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Do not leave activation until the planned launch time. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the destination stream you intend to use. Studio labels can change, so follow the current interface.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Add them to the encoder’s output configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to broadcast to that destination. Do not include it in screenshots, public scripts, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio before continuing.
Choose encoder output settings
Match the output to the media and the server’s actual capacity, then check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table for the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate. A higher setting is not automatically better if the server’s outbound connection cannot sustain it.

- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported video codecs.
- Audio codec: Use AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Ingest protocol: Prefer RTMPS, RTMP over an SSL connection. YouTube’s encoder settings page says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube Help and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Set the resolution and frame rate to suit the visual loop, rather than choosing them solely to maximize output. Use YouTube’s table to select the corresponding bitrate. No particular bitrate number or cloud instance size is established here, so check the current table and provider specifications for your intended workload.
Bring the stream up and verify it
- Start the encoder with the selected media, output settings, YouTube server URL, and stream key.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast. Confirm that both audio and video reach YouTube and that the output remains stable.
- For an extended run, monitor the encoder process, server, network connection, and logs. A process supervisor or equivalent restart strategy can help bring an encoder back after a process failure, but it cannot guarantee that the server or YouTube connection will remain available.
Do a short check before treating the stream as ready for continuous operation. The YouTube settings are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular server or command will work; performance depends on the actual machine, media, and connection.

Plan for interruptions and archives
A continuous stream needs operational monitoring as well as an encoder: decide how you will detect a stopped process or lost connection, review logs, and restart the service when appropriate. Choose cloud compute only after checking its sustained outbound-streaming terms, regional availability, bandwidth and egress charges, storage needs, and recovery options. No provider or instance size can be recommended from the available facts alone.
Archive behavior is separate from whether the live broadcast stays up. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a stream that runs beyond 12 hours will be archived in full, or that a 24/7 broadcast becomes one continuous archive. Clear music and visual rights before going live
Lofi music is copyrighted unless you control the relevant rights or have a license that covers the intended use. Check permissions for both the live broadcast and any resulting archive; also check the rights for artwork, animation, and other visuals. A track being available online or described as “lofi” does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match may cause a placeholder image, warning, interruption, or termination. Even a license may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Resolve permissions and any required allowlisting with the rights holder before starting. Details are in YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
