Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Yes: a Linux VPS can keep a YouTube Live encoder running while your home computer is off. The setup is a server, your video files, a looping encoder process and a YouTube stream key. But ₹2,000 a month is a budget to test against the full bill—not proof that a particular VPS has enough CPU, network capacity or included data transfer for uninterrupted streaming.
For a straightforward playlist, FFmpeg is a practical headless option. Start with YouTube’s 720p30 H.264 recommendation of 4 Mbps, test your actual media and connection, and calculate outbound transfer before committing to a plan.
What runs on the VPS—and what stays with YouTube
Your VPS reads the playlist files, encodes or passes through the video, and sends one continuous live feed to YouTube’s ingest server. YouTube then delivers the live stream to viewers. Your home computer can be off, but the server, its storage, the encoder process and its outbound network connection must all keep working.
A low advertised VPS price does not establish that the instance can sustain the required encoding workload or monthly transfer. Treat the ₹2,000 target as an all-in budget test: verify the exact region, plan, billing terms, CPU performance, storage, outbound transfer and overage rates before choosing a provider.

Check channel access and prepare the stream
Confirm live-stream eligibility
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. In YouTube Studio, create or configure an encoder stream and copy the server URL and stream key from the stream settings. Labels and layout can change, so use the current Studio fields rather than relying on a saved screenshot. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and methods.
Protect the stream key
Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not put it in a public command, screenshot, repository or support post. Store it in a root-readable environment file on the VPS, restrict access to the server account that runs FFmpeg, and do not enable shell tracing when running commands that use the key. If you expose it, replace it in YouTube Studio before restarting the encoder.
Use media you have the rights to stream
Only add files you are entitled to broadcast, including the applicable music rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights: YouTube livestream terms. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a licensed track can still be interrupted if its rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Check the channel’s status and any required allowlisting with the rights holder before going live: YouTube live copyright issues.
Choose an encoder and set a starting quality
For a fixed playlist without scenes or live overlays, a command-line encoder such as FFmpeg avoids the need for a graphical desktop. OBS is an alternative if you need scene composition or visual controls, but a GUI and display environment can require additional server resources. Either way, verify the exact software build, source files, playlist order, audio/video compatibility and restart behavior on the VPS; no single command is guaranteed to work unchanged for every media set.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; its guidance says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For a modest first test, use the following H.264 starting point—not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or transmit it reliably.

| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends the encrypted ingest option. |
| Video | H.264, 1280 × 720, 30 fps | A manageable baseline for a first server test. |
| Video bitrate | 4 Mbps, CBR | YouTube lists 4 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 240p–720p at 30 fps; it is not a VPS capacity claim. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | Use YouTube’s recommended interval. |
| Audio | AAC, 128 kbps | A practical starting point for a stereo playlist; confirm the source audio and encoder output. |
For the complete current resolution and bitrate guidance, check YouTube’s encoder settings. Higher resolutions or bitrates can increase both encoding demands and transfer usage. Choose quality based on your source files and a sustained VPS test, not on the monthly price alone.
Build and loop the playlist with FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg and prepare the files
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your VPS operating system, then confirm it is available with ffmpeg -version. Put the media in a server directory such as /srv/stream/media, and make sure the account that will run FFmpeg can read it. Keep adequate free disk space for the files and logs.
Create /srv/stream/playlist.txt in the order you want items to play. The concat demuxer is most straightforward when entries have compatible streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rates and audio layouts; normalize mismatched files beforehand and test transitions, because mixed files can fail or produce unexpected output.

Start a test stream
In YouTube Studio, copy the RTMPS server URL and key from the encoder stream settings. On the VPS, set YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL to the complete ingest URL in a protected environment file; do not paste the key into a public script or publish the command with the key included. A command for a compatible playlist could look like this:

-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"
This is an implementation example, not a tested or universal recipe. It re-encodes the playlist to the example output settings, so the VPS needs enough CPU to encode in real time. The -re option paces file input for live output; -stream_loop -1 repeats the playlist. The video filter fits each frame inside a 1280 × 720 canvas and pads unused space rather than cropping it. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen codecs and that the concat input and every file behave as expected.
Set the ingest URL in a file readable only by the service account and root, and load it as an environment variable before starting the test. The exact file path and permission commands depend on your Linux distribution and account setup. Avoid putting the key in command-line arguments: process listings, shell history and logs can expose secrets.
Keep the encoder running and make failures visible
Starting FFmpeg in an interactive SSH session is not enough for an always-on channel: closing the session or rebooting the VPS can stop the process. Use a service manager such as systemd to launch it at boot, restart it after an unexpected exit and retain logs. These are operational recommendations, not a guarantee that every network failure will cause FFmpeg to exit or that automatic restart alone detects a stalled stream.
Example systemd service
Save a script that runs the FFmpeg command as /usr/local/bin/youtube-playlist.sh, make it executable, and ensure it reads the protected environment file. Then create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.service, adjusting the user and paths for your setup:
[Unit]
Description=YouTube playlist stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-playlist.env
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/youtube-playlist.sh
Restart=always
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
After saving the unit, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.service. Check its status with sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.service and inspect recent output with sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service -n 100 --no-pager. Do not share logs publicly without checking for stream keys or other credentials.

A service manager restarts a process that exits; it does not, by itself, prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy picture and sound. Add a periodic health check that verifies the process and the YouTube stream state, and alert yourself to a stopped stream, sustained resource exhaustion, low disk space or repeated restarts. Test the recovery path by deliberately restarting the service while monitoring the Studio preview.
Test the complete setup before relying on it
- Run a private or unlisted test: select the appropriate visibility in YouTube Studio and confirm that the ingest preview appears.
- Check the whole playlist: listen for missing or distorted audio, watch for black frames and broken transitions, and confirm that the playlist returns to its first item after the final file.
- Watch server load and network use: confirm the encoder keeps up in real time and the VPS sustains the outbound bitrate without exhausting CPU, memory, disk or transfer allowance.
- Test interruption and recovery: restart the service, inspect the logs, and check whether the live preview returns. Do not assume a process restart covers every YouTube or network disconnect.
- Monitor an extended run: check stream status, audio/video, server resources and logs during a longer trial before treating the setup as dependable.
YouTube’s own guidance recommends testing, checking the preview and monitoring audio and video: YouTube live streaming tips.
Plan the archive separately from the live loop
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, schedule separate live segments shorter than that threshold and keep a separate recording backup; do not rely on a multi-day continuous stream to become one complete replay. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Calculate whether the full VPS bill fits the target
At the example 4 Mbps video bitrate, a 30-day continuous stream sends about 1.296 TB of decimal payload (4 megabits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8). This is a calculation from the selected bitrate, before protocol overhead—not a provider-published allowance or a quote. Check how the VPS provider counts outbound transfer for your region and whether the plan includes enough data at that rate.
- Include the instance charge, taxes, currency conversion and any regional billing differences.
- Check outbound transfer included in the plan, overage pricing and whether network limits are hard caps or throttles.
- Account for IPv4 or other add-ons, storage, backups and any charges that recur separately.
- Verify CPU and memory capacity for your chosen encoder settings, especially if re-encoding or using a graphical encoder.
- Compare the complete monthly amount with the ₹2,000 target only after checking current provider terms for the actual location and plan.
No specific VPS plan or current all-in India quote is established here, so the target should not be treated as a confirmed price for a suitable server.

Alternative: let StreamNeo run the playlist in the cloud
For a YouTube-only playlist, StreamNeo is the managed alternative to try first: it loops uploaded video in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, up to 10 GB storage per slot pooled across your active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team.
- The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. Billing options are a day, a week, a month, 6 months or a year, and you can cancel any time.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service, and current plan details.
To compare a hosted loop with a VPS, consider the monthly cost, playlist editing needs, stream-key handling, recovery and monitoring requirements, and how you will preserve archives. StreamNeo is a YouTube service for uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. If you want the cloud route, start the free first day with StreamNeo.
Copyright and monetization are separate checks
Having permission to stream a playlist addresses rights; it does not guarantee monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policy expects original and authentic content rather than mass-produced, generic or repetitive material. Its policy page, updated July 15, 2025, clarifies that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under “inauthentic content.” Reviewers may consider the channel’s theme, most-viewed and newest videos, watch-time-heavy videos and metadata. A playlist with repetitive or minimally varied items may raise policy concerns, but no outcome can be predicted for an individual channel. Continuous runtime alone does not qualify a channel for the YouTube Partner Program. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No stream appears in Studio | Incorrect ingest URL or key, ineligible channel, or outbound connection issue | Recheck the encoder stream settings and channel access; review FFmpeg and service logs. If the key was exposed, replace it and update the protected environment file. |
| FFmpeg exits when the playlist starts | Wrong file path, unreadable media, unsupported format, or incompatible concat entries | Check file permissions and paths, test each file, and normalize mismatched media before creating the concat playlist. |
| Audio is absent or distorted | Source files have differing audio streams or formats, or the encoding output is unsuitable | Inspect the source audio streams, verify AAC output in the test preview, and normalize problematic files. |
| Video freezes, drops frames or falls behind | Insufficient encoding capacity, unstable outbound network, or an unsuitable bitrate | Review CPU and network use over time; test a lower resolution or bitrate and ensure the provider’s transfer and capacity limits are adequate. |
| Service is active but the live stream is gone | The encoder process may remain alive despite an ingest or stream-health problem | Check Studio’s stream status and recent logs; test a service restart and add a health check that alerts on an unhealthy stream. |
| Replay is missing or incomplete | The live event exceeded 12 hours or YouTube did not capture it as expected | Use planned segments shorter than 12 hours and maintain a separate local or server-side recording if the archive is important. |
Use the YouTube stream preview and the VPS logs together: a running process is not proof that the channel is receiving usable audio and video.
