You can connect an external SSD to either handheld through a dock or hub, but the setup differs: Steam Deck has a documented storage workflow in Steam Settings, while ASUS’s cited ROG Ally guidance covers microSD expansion—not a complete USB SSD procedure. First make sure the dock’s USB port supports data, then follow the instructions for your handheld and decide whether the drive needs to work on other devices before formatting it.
Before you connect the SSD
A dock’s USB-C connector does not automatically mean it carries data. Check the dock’s port map and attach the SSD to a port documented for USB data. Also confirm that the dock, cable, handheld, and any connected accessories meet your power needs.
- For Steam Deck charging through a dock: Valve says a dock or hub needs USB-C Power Delivery (PD) passthrough to power the Deck. A dock may allocate some incoming power to downstream peripherals, which can trigger a slow-charge warning. See Valve’s docking guide.
- For general dock compatibility: Valve describes Steam Deck as a general-purpose PC and says most USB-C-compliant hubs and docks work. Thunderbolt and DisplayLink docks may work, but Valve does not officially support them.
- If the drive must move between devices: Check the formatting consequences before using the Deck’s format option. The procedure in the Nextorage manual warns that a Steam Deck-formatted drive may not work with other devices.
For reference, Valve’s official Steam Deck Docking Station has three USB-A 3.1 Gen 1 ports and a USB-C PD passthrough input; those specifications describe Valve’s dock, not every third-party model. The Steam Deck Docking Station specifications list its ports.
Connect the dock and SSD
- Connect the dock or hub to the handheld’s USB-C port.
- Connect the dock’s power supply if you need charging or the dock requires external power. For Steam Deck, use a dock or hub with USB-C PD passthrough if you want it to power the handheld.
- Plug the SSD into a USB port identified by the dock maker as data-capable. If the dock has multiple USB ports, use the port specified for storage or USB data rather than assuming every port has the same function.
- Wait for the operating system to detect the drive, then use the appropriate storage steps below. Do not disconnect it while a format, transfer, or other write operation is in progress.
Set up an external SSD on Steam Deck
The following Steam Deck procedure is documented in Nextorage’s portable SSD manual. It is a manufacturer-specific guide, not a guarantee that every SSD uses an identical workflow.

- Supports Standard Desktop 2.5"/3.5" SATA Hard Drives or SSD.
- Supports hard drives up to 10TB.
- Plug and play, no drivers needed.
- Supports Offline Cloning up to 60Mbps.
- Supports Transfer Speeds up to 5Gbps (USB 3.0),480Mbps (USB 2.0), 12Mbps (USB 1.1)
Format the drive
- Connect the SSD to the Deck, directly or through a data-capable dock port.
- Press the Steam button and open Settings > Storage.
- Select the external drive and confirm the format operation, following the on-screen instructions.
Formatting erases data on the drive. Back up files you need before confirming. Nextorage also warns that formatting for Steam Deck may make the drive unusable on devices other than Steam Deck. If you need the SSD to move among a Deck, Ally, or computer, account for that before formatting rather than treating this step as a universal external-drive recommendation.
Install or move games
After the drive appears in Steam’s Storage settings, choose it as the install destination when installing a game. You can also use Storage to move existing game data between locations. The precise options shown can depend on the connected drive and current SteamOS interface.

- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
Eject before disconnecting
When the Deck is running, use Settings > Storage to eject the external drive before unplugging it. Wait for the system to complete the eject operation, then disconnect the SSD or dock.
Set up an external SSD on ROG Ally
ROG’s US FAQ asks, “Does the ROG Ally support external storage?” Its documented expansion method is the Ally’s UHS-II microSD reader, which is backward-compatible with microSD cards; the FAQ describes installing games to the card. It does not provide a USB external SSD format, game-install, or safe-eject procedure. See the ASUS ROG Ally FAQ.

The original 2023 ROG Ally specifications list a USB Type-C combo port with USB 3.2 Gen 2 and DisplayPort 1.4. That describes the original model’s port; verify the specifications and Windows behavior for your exact Ally model and dock. ASUS’s original ROG Ally specifications do not establish a complete USB SSD setup sequence.
- Connect the dock to the Ally and attach the SSD to a port the dock maker identifies as USB data.
- Use Windows to check whether the drive is detected and follow the drive’s or Windows’ applicable setup prompts. Do not assume the Steam Deck format option or file-system guidance applies to Ally.
- Before installing games to the drive, confirm that the game launcher and Windows recognize it as an available destination.
- Use Windows’ available safe-removal controls before unplugging a drive that is in use; the consulted ASUS FAQ does not specify an Ally-specific eject path.
ASUS lists a 65 W supplied AC adapter in its Ally Series FAQ. That is the adapter specification, not a statement about the power draw or charging performance of every docked setup. Check the dock and exact handheld model specifications when planning power delivery.

Dock or direct connection?
| Setup | What to check | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SSD through a dock or hub | That the chosen port supports data; for Steam Deck charging through the dock, that it has USB-C PD passthrough; and that its power budget suits the handheld and attached devices. | Can connect storage alongside charging and other peripherals, but adds dock-port and power requirements. |
| SSD connected directly | That the drive and cable connect to the handheld and that the connection supports the intended use. | Avoids relying on a dock’s port map, but does not provide the dock’s other connections. No comparative performance result is established by the cited sources. |
Troubleshoot a missing or unreliable SSD
- Check the port: Confirm in the dock documentation that the port you used supports USB data, not only charging or another function.
- Reconnect the chain: Disconnect and reconnect the SSD and dock, then check whether the operating system detects the drive.
- Check power: Review the dock’s power requirements and passthrough specifications. On Steam Deck, downstream devices can reduce available charging power enough to produce a slow-charge warning.
- Verify the model and storage state: Confirm the exact handheld model and inspect its operating system’s storage controls. Do not apply Deck formatting instructions to Ally without confirming they suit your Windows setup.
- Test the dock separately: Valve recommends testing a dock with another USB-C device when troubleshooting dock USB or display problems. Its docking guide also links to dock firmware reset and update steps.
- Check the accessory maker’s documentation: Dock, cable, SSD, and enclosure behavior can vary; the cited guidance does not establish that every combination works identically.
What not to assume about format and speed
Valve’s ext4-with-casefolding statement in its Steam Deck FAQ concerns microSD cards. It is not a universal format instruction for USB external SSDs. Likewise, the cited sources do not establish comparative SSD speeds, game load-time improvements, or a reliability rate for these docked setups.
