You can run a YouTube loop stream from a Raspberry Pi without a monitor by preparing Raspberry Pi OS Lite and remote access with Raspberry Pi Imager, connecting to the Pi over SSH, and sending a local video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg. First confirm that your channel can go live and that your Pi, source file, and internet connection can sustain the settings you choose. A successful FFmpeg start alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi with a microSD card, power supply, and a network connection. Use Ethernet or Wi-Fi; check whether your exact board and wireless adapter support the Wi-Fi band you intend to use.
- Another computer to write the card with Raspberry Pi Imager and connect to the Pi remotely.
- A video file stored on the Pi, plus the rights needed to stream it. Owning or possessing a file does not by itself establish permission to stream it.
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to go live. Check YouTube Studio before building an unattended setup; availability and restrictions are account-dependent.
- A stable upload connection with enough headroom for the stream bitrate. In India, consider whether the router, broadband connection, and power supply will remain available for the intended run.
This guide gives a starting approach, not a guarantee that every Raspberry Pi model can encode every resolution in real time. Benchmark the exact board, FFmpeg build, media, and network you will use.
Prepare Raspberry Pi OS and remote access without a monitor
Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi Imager for installing Raspberry Pi OS and configuring the initial user, network, and remote access. Raspberry Pi OS Lite is the practical choice for a headless server; it has no desktop interface. The official Raspberry Pi headless setup guide covers this workflow.
- On another computer, open Raspberry Pi Imager and choose your Raspberry Pi model, then select Raspberry Pi OS Lite.
- Open Imager’s OS customization settings before writing the card. Set a username and password, configure Wi-Fi if you will not use Ethernet, and enable SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. Do not rely on obsolete instructions that assume a default username and password.
- Write the card, safely eject it, insert it into the Pi, connect Ethernet if applicable, and power on the Pi.
- Find the Pi’s address or hostname using your router’s connected-device list or the hostname you configured. Then connect from a terminal on the other computer, for example with
ssh [email protected]if local name resolution supports that hostname. Otherwise substitute the Pi’s address, such asssh [email protected]. - Accept the host key prompt only if the device is the Pi you just booted, and enter the password configured in Imager.
Raspberry Pi documents a manual fallback using an empty ssh file and a userconf.txt file on the boot partition, but Imager customization is preferable because it handles credentials and network setup together. VNC is not available with Raspberry Pi OS Lite; use SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect for the headless setup.

Install FFmpeg and check the build
Install FFmpeg from the package repository for the Raspberry Pi OS release you installed, then inspect the installed version and available encoders. Package names and available hardware/software encoders can vary by OS release and build.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
Confirm that your build supports the options and codecs you plan to use. In particular, verify the installed FFmpeg help or documentation for -stream_loop -1 and its placement. For a file input, it is an input option and belongs before that input’s -i. FFmpeg’s command documentation describes how input and output options are arranged.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Use the endpoint YouTube provides, choosing RTMPS where available.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials: do not expose a real key in a public script, screenshot, source-control repository, or message.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
For a persistent script or service, keep the actual key in a separate configuration file with restrictive permissions rather than embedding it in material you may share. A placeholder such as <STREAM_KEY> is not a working key.
Choose the stream settings for your Pi and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection; FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over SSL. See YouTube’s encoder settings and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

For H.264 at 30 fps, YouTube lists these recommended video bitrates. They are recommendations, not guaranteed minimums or evidence that a particular Pi can encode at that rate.
| Output target | YouTube H.264 recommendation | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | Use only if the exact Pi build can encode it in real time and upload capacity is adequate. |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | A lower-load starting target than 1080p, but still test the actual board. |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | Useful when bandwidth is limited; verify the result in YouTube’s preview. |
Test upload capacity and leave room for normal network variation rather than selecting a bitrate that consumes the entire measured upstream. Test with representative motion and audio, because a static or silent test clip may not expose problems that occur with the real program.

Build and test an FFmpeg loop command
The following is a command structure, not a universal copy-paste preset. Replace the filename, endpoint, key, and bitrate with your own values. Confirm the installed build supports the loop option and selected encoders. Keep the key out of shell history if that history is retained or shared.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /home/username/video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -b:v 3M -minrate 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This illustrates a 30 fps H.264-oriented starting point with a two-second GOP and 3 Mbps target video rate, corresponding to YouTube’s listed 720p-at-30-fps recommendation. It does not set output resolution or frame rate, and those must be chosen to match the source and the Pi’s capabilities. If YouTube provides a different RTMPS endpoint format, use the supplied server URL and key in the format required by that endpoint rather than copying the example URL literally.

-rereads the file at its intended rate instead of pushing it as fast as the file can be read.-stream_loop -1requests infinite looping for the input; verify support and option placement in your installed FFmpeg build.-c:v libx264requests software H.264 encoding. If unavailable, inspectffmpeg -encodersand use an encoder actually supported by that build, or adjust the plan.- The bitrate and buffer options illustrate a constant-rate target. YouTube recommends CBR; validate stream health rather than assuming the command guarantees a stable rate.
-g 60at 30 fps requests a two-second GOP. If you change frame rate, adjust the GOP so the keyframe interval remains two seconds.-c:a aacencodes audio as AAC. If the source has no audio, either deliberately provide a valid silent audio track or adapt the command for a video-only stream that YouTube accepts. Check source streams before choosing mapping or audio options.-f flvselects the common RTMP-family output container; use the actual YouTube-provided RTMPS endpoint and confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports it.
Do not assume stream copy will work for every input. Copying avoids encoding load but only works when the source codecs, audio, timestamps, and ingest expectations are compatible. Transcoding offers control over output settings but costs CPU; no model-independent Raspberry Pi performance guarantee is established here.
Verify the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start with a short test using the same file, audio, resolution, bitrate, FFmpeg options, and network path intended for the longer stream.
- Watch FFmpeg’s terminal output for connection errors, encoder failures, repeated reconnects, or warnings about timestamps and streams.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check its preview and stream-health indicators. Wait for the preview rather than treating a running local process as proof of successful ingest.
- Watch the live result from a separate device and check both picture and sound. Confirm that the transition back to the beginning of the file behaves acceptably.
- Only then consider unattended operation. As an operational option, configure a systemd service with restart behavior and inspect its journal logs after a failure; verify the unit syntax for your OS version before relying on it.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The Pi does not appear on the network: Check power, card imaging, Wi-Fi credentials, band compatibility, and the router’s client list. Try Ethernet if available, then use the Pi’s current address with SSH.
- SSH reports a connection or name error: Confirm the Pi has booted and is on the same reachable network. If
raspberrypi.localdoes not resolve, use the address shown by the router. - FFmpeg says an option or encoder is unknown: Check
ffmpeg -version,ffmpeg -encoders, and the installed build’s help. Install a build with the needed support or choose an available supported encoder. - YouTube does not show a preview: Recheck the server URL and key, confirm the channel can go live, verify the RTMPS endpoint syntax, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection output. Reset the key if it may have leaked.
- Stream health is poor or the feed disconnects: Reduce resolution or bitrate, test the upload path again, and check whether the Pi is keeping up with real-time encoding. A bitrate recommendation is not a substitute for testing your line and device.
- Picture works but audio does not: Inspect whether the file contains an audio stream and whether FFmpeg is mapping and encoding it as intended. For an intentionally silent video, decide explicitly whether to add silence or send video only.
- The file does not loop cleanly: Test the loop locally, inspect FFmpeg logs for timestamp or stream-format issues, and try a compatible transcode if stream copy is being used.
Copyright and YouTube live rules
Stream only content you are entitled to use. YouTube says live streams may be terminated for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes; review its copyright guidance for live streams. This does not determine how Indian law applies to a particular work, and a local copy of a video is not proof of streaming rights. Check the rights for music, gameplay footage, and other included material before broadcasting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than operating a Pi encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
