To stream from an Oracle Cloud VPS to YouTube, create an internet-connected Linux VM, connect to it over SSH, install an FFmpeg build with RTMPS support, and send a media source to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For a 1080p30 H.264 starting profile, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Test privately and check YouTube’s stream health before going public.
This guide covers the cloud and YouTube setup, the encoder settings that matter, and the main failure cases. It does not provide a copy-and-run FFmpeg command: exact option syntax and interactions depend on the input and FFmpeg build, and have not been verified here.
What you need before you start
- An Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) tenancy and a Linux VM with a route to the public internet.
- SSH access using the private key paired with the public key configured when the instance was created.
- A media file accessible to the VM, plus an FFmpeg build that supports the protocol and codecs you plan to use.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live Control Room, where you can retrieve the stream’s RTMPS URL and stream key.
This is a file-to-YouTube workflow: FFmpeg reads a media source available to the VM and encodes or passes it through to YouTube. It is not a camera or capture-card setup.
Provision an Oracle Cloud VM
Check Always Free availability
For an Always Free VM, use the tenancy’s home region and select an eligible shape and image. Oracle’s current Always Free documentation lists VM.Standard.A1.Flex and Ubuntu among eligible options. For Ampere A1 Flex, Oracle documents a monthly allowance of the first 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours, equivalent for Always Free tenancies to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory. These figures describe Oracle’s documented allowance, not a guarantee that capacity will be available when you create the instance.

Oracle notes that host capacity can temporarily prevent instance creation in a home region. If an eligible VM cannot be created, try again later or consider another suitable hosting option; do not assume a different region has the same Always Free eligibility.
Create a public route and SSH access
- In the OCI console, create or select a Virtual Cloud Network (VCN) and a subnet with internet connectivity. Follow Oracle’s Linux instance setup flow for the current console labels and networking choices.
- For direct administration over SSH, assign the instance a public IP and permit SSH ingress only from a trusted source address where feasible. Avoid opening SSH to all internet addresses unless there is a specific, temporary reason.
- Select an eligible Linux image, such as Ubuntu, and configure the SSH public key during instance creation. Keep the matching private key secure; you will need it to connect.
- After the instance is running, connect using its public IP, the image’s documented SSH username, and your private key. Confirm that you can reach the VM before moving on to software installation.
A public IP alone is not enough: the subnet’s route and the network security rules must allow the required traffic. This streaming setup needs outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest service; SSH is an inbound administrative connection.

Install and check FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using the current instructions for the Ubuntu release you selected. Package names, versions, and build options can change, so consult the official Ubuntu and FFmpeg documentation for that release rather than relying on a command copied for a different image. After installation, check the version and confirm that the build includes the protocols and encoders you intend to use. In particular, verify RTMPS support before configuring a live output.
There is no universal command that is safe to paste for every setup: the correct input options depend on whether your source is a file, playlist, or another media source; output options depend on the codecs and whether the file should be re-encoded. Verify the exact FFmpeg syntax against the documentation for the installed build and test it with a short, controlled stream before scheduling a long session.

Get the YouTube RTMPS destination and key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- In Live Control Room, reveal the RTMPS server URL and copy the stream key. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
- Configure FFmpeg to send to the exact RTMPS destination and key shown for that stream. Do not guess an ingest hostname or substitute an endpoint found in an old example.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not place one in a public repository, public script, screenshot, or shared log. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update your encoder configuration.
YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. Its RTMPS URL is available in Live Control Room; use that secure destination for this setup.
Choose an encoder profile that fits the VM
YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 frames per second. For the broadest starting point, use H.264 and choose a resolution and frame rate the VM can encode reliably. The following YouTube recommendations are platform-side targets, not performance guarantees for a particular OCI shape.

| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate | Useful context |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | A lower-bandwidth starting profile than 1080p30. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | A practical baseline for a 1080p30 stream. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | Higher motion smoothness and a greater encoding and network load. |
These are YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations as accessed in 2026. YouTube also publishes AV1 and H.265 guidance; if using either codec, follow the current table for that codec rather than applying the H.264 figures.
Settings to align
- Rate control: use CBR, or constant bitrate, as YouTube recommends for encoder configuration.
- Keyframes: target a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz; its advanced guidance lists 48 kHz for 5.1 audio.
- Resolution and frame rate: keep the output profile within YouTube’s supported limits and within what the VM can encode without overload.
- Bandwidth: allow enough stable outbound capacity for the video and audio bitrate, plus network overhead. The VPS’s actual network path matters as much as the nominal encoder target.
A higher profile is not automatically better. More pixels, frames, or complex encoding settings can exceed the VM’s CPU capacity or make output unstable. No OCI shape or FFmpeg configuration has been benchmarked here; start conservatively, inspect the result, and increase quality only if the VM and connection sustain it.

Run a controlled test before going public
- Start FFmpeg with the verified input, output profile, RTMPS URL, and stream key.
- Keep the YouTube stream private or otherwise controlled while you validate it.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check that video and audio arrive, that the picture matches the source, and that YouTube reports healthy stream status.
- Test with media that has movement and sound similar to what you plan to stream; a static or silent test may not reveal the same issues.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and correct problems before making the stream public.
Troubleshoot the common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| SSH connection fails | Public IP, route, SSH ingress rule, username for the selected image, and the private key matching the configured public key. | Confirm the VM is running and that SSH ingress is limited to, but includes, your current trusted address. |
| VM creation is unavailable | Whether you are in the tenancy’s home region and whether the selected shape is eligible and currently has capacity. | Retry later if Oracle reports a temporary capacity shortage; do not treat the allowance as a capacity reservation. |
| FFmpeg cannot open the output | Whether the installed build supports RTMPS and whether the destination exactly matches the URL from Live Control Room. | Check the build’s protocol support and verify the URL scheme and host rather than replacing them with a guessed endpoint. |
| RTMPS SSL or connection error | The configured scheme and server, outbound access, and whether the actual RTMPS URL—not the default RTMP URL—was used. | YouTube advises checking the RTMPS URL and trying port 443 if needed. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The stream key, selected live stream, output destination, and whether the encoder is still running. | Copy the key again from the intended stream in Live Control Room; reset it if it may have been exposed. |
| Video or audio quality is poor | YouTube stream-health messages, bitrate and keyframe settings, source quality, and whether the VM is encoding without overload. | Test at a lower resolution or frame rate, then raise the profile only if the VM and network path remain stable. |
| Stream stops after running for a while | FFmpeg process state, VM availability, network interruptions, and OCI idle-instance policy exposure. | Inspect the VM’s actual CPU, network, and (for A1) memory utilization. Oracle documents possible reclamation when, over a seven-day period, CPU utilization at the 95th percentile is below 20%, network utilization is below 20%, and (for A1) memory utilization is below 20%; whether the policy applies depends on the workload’s measured metrics. |
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Using FFmpeg or a cloud VM does not grant rights to the media being streamed or guarantee that a channel can monetize it. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, including music and other material embedded in a video. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming, copyright, and monetization policies for the channel and content involved; technical delivery and policy eligibility are separate questions.
