You can send a prerecorded video or another supported input from an Ubuntu 24.04 virtual machine to YouTube Live with FFmpeg: install FFmpeg, create or select a YouTube live event, copy that event’s RTMPS server URL and stream key, configure an encoder profile, and test the feed before relying on it. The right VM size depends on the video, frame rate, encoding preset, and sustained upload capacity; an Indian region name alone does not tell you whether a particular VM type is available there.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu Server 24.04 VM in an Indian region, with SSH access and outbound network access configured in the provider’s firewall or security rules.
- A video file stored somewhere the VM can read, or a separately configured live input. A headless VM does not automatically have access to a camera or capture device attached to your local computer.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live event, and the event’s current server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- Enough sustained CPU capacity to encode your chosen profile and enough stable outbound throughput to carry the video bitrate plus audio and network overhead.
YouTube recommends RTMPS—RTMP delivered over TLS/SSL—for encrypted delivery to its servers. Use the endpoint shown for the specific event, rather than reusing a URL or key from another configuration. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain where to retrieve these values.
Choose an Indian VM region and prepare Ubuntu
AWS lists Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2) as Indian regions; Hyderabad is marked as opt-in. Google Cloud’s locations information lists Mumbai (asia-south1) for Cloud Workstations, but that is not a guarantee of Compute Engine machine availability. Confirm the specific VM product, machine type, and capacity in the provider’s service-specific region list before provisioning. AWS Regions and Google Cloud locations provide region information.
After connecting to the VM over SSH, update Ubuntu’s package index, install FFmpeg, and check the installed binary and encoders:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders | less
The package version and enabled codecs can vary with the image and repository state. Inspect the installed build instead of assuming a particular encoder is present. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API setup guide gives sudo apt install ffmpeg as an installation example.
Create the YouTube event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event you intend to use.
- Copy the event’s current server URL and stream key. Select or show the RTMPS endpoint where YouTube provides that option.
- Keep the key private. Do not include a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot, shell history, or support log. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube’s live configuration.
The destination used by FFmpeg must match the endpoint and key YouTube shows for that event. A protocol mismatch can look like a connection that hangs or times out; check that the endpoint expects RTMPS and that the client is not trying cleartext RTMP. See Google’s RTMPS delivery documentation.
Choose a YouTube-compatible encoding profile
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you plan to send. Its general RTMP/RTMPS guidance permits H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. For H.264, the current recommended video bitrates include:

| Output profile | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended values for the listed H.264 profiles, not a universal bitrate for every video. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codec-specific guidance. The same page recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, progressive scan, and Rec. 709 for advanced SDR settings.
Choose a profile your input can support and your VM can encode continuously. A speed test’s peak result is not a sustained-throughput guarantee: leave upload headroom rather than setting the video bitrate equal to the best number reported by a test. Software encoding load also varies with resolution, frame rate, preset, and concurrent work. No single VM size can be specified responsibly without those details.
Send a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
For a prerecorded video, this is an illustrative starting pattern, not a tested command. Replace the destination with the exact RTMPS endpoint and key format shown by YouTube, and set bitrate, frame rate, GOP length, and any scaling to match the actual source and event profile.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY'
-rereads the file at approximately its normal playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. Remove it if you want the file to play once.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 encoder; confirm it is available in the installed FFmpeg build withffmpeg -encoders.-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower encoding demand. If the VM cannot encode in real time, a faster preset may reduce CPU load at the cost of bitrate efficiency; test the output rather than assuming the result.-b:vand-maxrateset the target and maximum video rate in this example;-bufsizeconfigures the rate-control buffer. Adjust these values for the chosen YouTube profile.-g 60means a GOP of 60 frames. At 30 fps that is a two-second interval; calculate the GOP from the actual frame rate so the keyframe spacing follows YouTube’s guidance.-pix_fmt yuv420pand the AAC options make a conventional H.264/AAC output profile. Confirm the source has usable audio, or adapt the command if it does not.
The command uses a 4 Mbps video target as a starting example, not a recommendation for every resolution. An AWS guide has a similar FFmpeg-to-RTMPS syntax pattern for AWS IVS, but its endpoint and key are for IVS, not YouTube; use only YouTube’s own event credentials here. AWS IVS streaming software instructions.
For a camera or another live input
Replace /path/to/input.mp4 with an input source configured for the device and operating system in use. A cloud VM generally cannot read a camera plugged into your home computer without an additional capture or network-ingest setup. Device names, drivers, and input flags differ by hardware, so the prerecorded-file command is not a complete camera configuration.
Rehearse, monitor, and keep the process manageable
- Run a rehearsal using representative motion and audio before the scheduled event.
- In Live Control Room, check that YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate, shows a preview, and reports healthy ingestion.
- Check the picture’s orientation and aspect ratio, listen for clean audio, and confirm that FFmpeg continues encoding in real time.
- During the event, watch FFmpeg’s output, VM CPU and memory use, network throughput, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- For an unattended run, choose a process supervisor and log-retention approach appropriate to your setup. Treat restart behavior as an operational safeguard, not a promise that the stream cannot disconnect; secure the key wherever service configuration stores it.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its encoder guidance covers testing and stream settings.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg appears to connect but YouTube receives no video | Confirm you used the current event’s endpoint and key, and that the endpoint is RTMPS if required. Check the FFmpeg output for protocol or connection errors. |
| YouTube shows unstable or unhealthy ingestion | Compare actual sustained outbound throughput with the full stream bitrate, reduce the target profile if capacity is insufficient, and inspect CPU load for encoding lag. |
The installed FFmpeg rejects libx264 |
Check ffmpeg -encoders. The installed build may not include that encoder; select an available compatible encoder or use a build that provides it. |
| Video stutters or runs behind | Check whether encoding speed stays at or above real time, whether the VM is CPU-constrained, and whether network throughput is stable. A faster preset or lower output profile may reduce demands. |
| The live event has no usable audio | Verify the input actually contains an audio stream and inspect FFmpeg’s mapping/output messages; the example assumes an audio track is present. |
| The stream ends when the video finishes | For looping playback, retain -stream_loop -1; remove it when the desired behavior is to end after one play. |
What affects the cost of an Indian VM setup
The sources establish example Indian regions but do not establish a current best provider, VM price, capacity guarantee, or bandwidth guarantee. Compare the specific machine type’s availability, sustained CPU performance for your encoding preset, outbound bandwidth and egress billing, storage for the source file, and region or administrative requirements before choosing. A lower-cost instance is not useful if it cannot encode the selected profile or sustain its upload.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous prerecorded-video stream to YouTube without administering FFmpeg, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera input. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same stream key for every YouTube event?
Use the key and server URL shown for the event you are configuring; do not assume credentials from another event are interchangeable. Keep the key private and rotate it if exposed.

Will a Mumbai or Hyderabad region always have the VM I need?
No. Region listings do not establish that a specific machine type is currently available. Check the selected provider’s service-specific availability when provisioning; AWS marks Hyderabad as opt-in.
Can this setup send a live camera feed from my home?
Not automatically. The VM needs a live input it can access; a camera connected only to your local computer is not visible to a headless cloud VM by default.
