You can run it as a standalone program for a local test or use its documented Docker setup for a more managed deployment. The steps below cover both, plus LAN access, security, and the NGINX alternative.
Choose an RTMP server setup
MediaMTX is the simplest shared route across the three desktop operating systems in this guide. Its documentation describes it as a single executable that needs no dependency or interpreter, supports Linux, Windows, and macOS, and handles RTMP among other protocols: MediaMTX project documentation.

There is no controlled performance or latency comparison behind these options here, so choose based on deployment style and stack requirements rather than an assumed speed advantage.
Install and launch MediaMTX without Docker
- Choose the right release. Open the MediaMTX releases and download the artifact matching your operating system and CPU architecture. Extract the archive.
- Start the server. On Windows, double-click
mediamtx.exe. On Linux or macOS, open a terminal in the extracted directory and run./mediamtx. - Keep the default configuration for the first local test. The RTMP listener in the documented Docker example is port 1935. If you later change ports or other settings, check the current configuration file and official documentation before editing.
Leave the server process running while you test from OBS. These basic launch steps do not require a paid host for a same-machine test.

Publish a test stream from OBS
- Start MediaMTX on the computer that will receive the stream.
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Stream.
- Set the service to Custom….
- Enter
rtmp://localhost/mystreamin the Server field and leave Stream key empty. - Save the settings, then select Start Streaming.
MediaMTX documents this as an OBS publishing configuration; the stream is available at the path /mystream. See its OBS publishing instructions for current details.
Connect from another device on your LAN
localhost always refers to the device running OBS. To publish from a different device on the same network, replace it with the server computer’s reachable LAN address, keeping the path, for example rtmp://SERVER-LAN-ADDRESS/mystream. Make sure the server is reachable on the RTMP port and that host or network firewall rules permit the connection. The exact address and firewall steps depend on your network; the MediaMTX setup pages do not provide a universal firewall recipe.

Run MediaMTX in Docker
MediaMTX documents Docker as an isolated, deterministic option and recommends its Docker method for production environments. The official example publishes RTMP on TCP port 1935 and maps ports for other supported protocols too. You only need to expose the protocols you actually use; do not copy every port blindly.
Use the current MediaMTX Docker instructions for the exact command, image details, and any transport or WebRTC address options relevant to your deployment. Image tags and configuration can change, so the current official instructions are more dependable than a copied command that may have aged.

Secure access beyond the local machine
A same-computer test is different from a server that accepts traffic from a LAN or the public internet. If you make the server reachable beyond the host, deliberately configure the host firewall and any router or cloud firewall, restrict allowed sources where possible, and do not share credentials publicly.
Use encryption and authentication where appropriate
MediaMTX documents RTMPS configuration using a TLS certificate and key, as well as RTMP authentication using username/password or token query parameters. Follow its current RTMPS configuration and authentication documentation rather than putting credentials in a public post or an exposed URL. MediaMTX’s RTMP-specific documentation notes that RTMPS is not supported by most major players; check compatibility with the client you plan to use.

When NGINX is the better fit
Choose an NGINX RTMP setup when your existing deployment specifically calls for NGINX and its module ecosystem, not because it is the only way to receive RTMP. The current NGINX documentation surfaced for this route concerns the NGINX Plus RTMP dynamic module and package installation. An older OBS community guide also describes an NGINX RTMP setup, but its platform installation references should not be treated as current download instructions.

- OBS cannot connect: Confirm MediaMTX is still running, the server address is correct, and you used the path
/mystream. For OBS on the same computer uselocalhost; for another device use the server’s reachable LAN address. - Connection works locally but not from another device: Check that the server is listening on the expected RTMP port and that the host firewall, router, or cloud firewall permits the intended traffic. Avoid opening public access unless you have configured access controls deliberately.
- The server does not start: Verify that the downloaded release matches both the operating system and CPU architecture, and that the archive was extracted before launching the executable.
- A container starts but OBS cannot reach it: Check that Docker maps the RTMP port, TCP 1935 in the documented example, and that OBS uses the host address reachable from its device.
- RTMPS fails with a player: Check whether the client supports RTMPS; MediaMTX’s RTMP documentation cautions that most major players do not.
Or let it run in the cloud
A local RTMP server is useful when you want to receive an OBS stream on equipment you control.
