To enable automatic ad breaks on an always-on YouTube stream, open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, go to Edit → Monetization, turn monetization on, and choose Automatic. You can select Low, Medium, or High frequency. YouTube decides whether an ad actually runs; enabling automatic mid-rolls creates opportunities, not guaranteed impressions.
Before you start: confirm monetization eligibility
Your channel must be monetized, and monetization must be on for the stream. To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form or live streams, creators must also accept YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module in the Earn area. See YouTube’s computer guide to choosing monetization.
These are live-stream settings, not the separate mid-roll controls for uploaded videos. The steps below apply to streams configured in Live Control Room, including encoder and mobile streams; YouTube notes that its stream-settings instructions do not apply to webcam streams. See Manage live stream settings.
Turn on automatic mid-roll ads for a stream
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go live.
- Open the stream. Start one from the Stream tab, or select a scheduled stream under Manage.
- Open monetization settings. In Live Control Room, select Edit → Monetization.
- Enable monetization. Set Monetization to On.
- Choose automatic breaks. In live ad settings, select Automatic, then choose Low, Medium, or High frequency.
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls. Its help page reports that channels choosing live automatic mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. That comparison is not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel. See Monetize your live stream.

Choose a break setting that fits your stream
| Setting | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube manages mid-roll timing. Choose Low, Medium, or High frequency. | YouTube recommends this mode. It includes viewer-experience controls, but does not promise a particular number of ads. |
| Scheduled | Set an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | Offers a selectable interval; YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with Automatic. |
| Manual | Insert breaks yourself during the stream. | Gives you direct insertion control; YouTube says earnings potential may be lower than with Automatic. |
Low, Medium, and High are relative frequency choices: Low is the lowest frequency and earnings potential, Medium is in the middle, and High is the highest. The setting does not mean every viewer will receive an ad at a fixed interval. For YouTube’s descriptions of the modes and controls, see its live monetization guide.
What viewers experience—and what you can control
An enabled mid-roll slot is an opportunity for an ad, not a guarantee that one will be served. YouTube considers multiple factors, including viewer experience and advertiser values. If no ad runs, the viewer continues watching the stream; viewers who do see an ad return to the live stream after it ends or when they skip it. Details are in YouTube’s live ad behavior guide.

YouTube says Automatic mode limits ad disruption to channel members, temporarily pauses mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snoozes mid-rolls for everyone during high-engagement moments. If an important moment needs extra protection, select Delay ads in Live Control Room. YouTube says this delays automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes and displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while the delay is active.
Set defaults for future live streams
Monetized channels without rights management can set mid-roll defaults for newly created live streams in Live Control Room’s channel-level settings. YouTube states that the default is monetization On with the recommended Automatic: Medium option, and that creators can change it. Channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings. Check YouTube’s live monetization instructions for the relevant controls.

Keep an always-on stream running without leaving a computer on
For the ad settings themselves, YouTube Studio is the direct setup path. If you also need the stream to keep running continuously from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The stream key connects the broadcast; it does not replace YouTube’s monetization eligibility or ad settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video stream running on YouTube without a computer staying on at home. Each slot supports the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
