To let OBS lower your outgoing bitrate when your connection is congested, open Settings → Advanced → Network and enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). YouTube does not automatically adjust the bitrate your encoder sends: YouTube can detect stream settings such as resolution and frame rate, but you configure the encoder’s bitrate yourself.
What “automatic bitrate” means for a YouTube stream
There are two separate behaviors that are easy to confuse. YouTube Live Control Room can detect encoder settings, including resolution and frame rate by default. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option changes the bitrate being sent when it detects network congestion. Your encoder still needs a starting bitrate.
| Behavior | What changes automatically | Where it is controlled | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube’s encoder-setting detection | YouTube detects encoder settings, including resolution and frame rate by default. | YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder connection | The encoder still sends a configured bitrate. |
| OBS dynamic bitrate | OBS can lower sending bitrate during congestion. | OBS Settings → Advanced → Network | Picture quality may fall, and this does not fix the underlying connection. Sudden congestion may also increase viewer delay. |
This setting concerns the bitrate your encoder sends, not adaptive playback behavior on viewers’ devices.
Choose a sensible starting bitrate
Choose settings for your target resolution, frame rate, and codec before enabling dynamic bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations include these 1080p60 examples; they are recommendations, not guaranteed minimum connection speeds or universal settings:

| AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps minimum; 12 Mbps recommended |
See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for recommendations for other profiles. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds. Its settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Check your available upload capacity rather than relying on a download-speed result. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” For a connection that must sustain a 10 Mbps stream, for example, the headroom rule means planning for more than 10 Mbps of available upload capacity; it is a planning margin, not a guarantee of stability.

Set up YouTube and OBS
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create or choose the stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or expose it in screenshots.
- Connect OBS. In OBS stream settings, select the YouTube service or enter the stream URL and key. Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and starting bitrate. Use the recommendations for that exact profile.
- Enable dynamic bitrate. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network, enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta), then select Apply or OK if shown. Labels or menu placement can vary by OBS release; use the current OBS help page if your interface differs.
- Test before the event. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check picture, motion, and audio before selecting Go live. Test with representative movement and sound, and monitor stream health during the broadcast.
YouTube’s setup guidance is available in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The OBS dynamic bitrate option is documented for RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS for its encoder workflow, so confirm protocol compatibility in your current OBS version and service configuration rather than assuming the dynamic option applies to every protocol.
What the setting can—and cannot—do
OBS describes the effect this way: “This will lower the bitrate when your connection cannot keep up, rather than dropping frames.” Lower bitrate means lower picture quality. The option is a continuity trade-off: it can reduce dropped frames during congestion, but does not repair weak Wi-Fi, insufficient upload capacity, or an unstable internet connection. OBS’s interface wording also warns that sudden congestion can increase viewer delay and that bitrate recovery may take up to a few minutes.

It does not automatically switch your stream to a different resolution, guarantee a stable broadcast, or preserve the same image quality during congestion. If the connection repeatedly struggles, reduce the stream profile, improve the connection, or investigate the source of instability. YouTube’s streaming tips cover connection reliability, testing, and monitoring.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The option is missing: Check the current OBS version and look under Settings → Advanced → Network. Menu wording may differ by release; OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting page documents the setting.
- Frames still drop: Dynamic bitrate only responds to congestion by lowering bitrate. Check upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, use a wired connection if practical, and test at the intended settings.
- The picture becomes soft or blocky: That is an expected consequence of a lower bitrate. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, or improve available upload capacity so the encoder can sustain its starting bitrate.
- Viewer delay rises during congestion: OBS notes sudden congestion can increase delay; restoring bitrate can take up to a few minutes. The setting is not a promise of unchanged latency.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm that OBS is sending to the selected stream URL with the correct stream key, then wait for Live Control Room to receive the encoder feed. Keep the key private; replace it if it has been exposed.
- The option does not seem to affect the stream: The OBS interface documents dynamic bitrate as currently supported only for RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS; check the protocol selected in OBS and your current service configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube stream that should loop 24/7, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
