To run a 24/7 YouTube channel through AWS Elemental MediaLive, first configure an AWS input for your upstream video source, then create a MediaLive channel, choose its pipeline class, and send an RTMP output to the ingestion address and stream name YouTube provides. For an India deployment, MediaLive lists Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2); verify the availability of every other AWS service your design needs in the chosen Region. The setup below is for a continuous source such as a game program feed—not a one-click way to loop uploaded videos.
What you need to decide before creating a channel
MediaLive receives an upstream video source and encodes it for delivery. Before opening the AWS console, decide what will supply the channel continuously and how that source will connect to AWS. For a gaming channel, that might be a program feed containing gameplay, commentary, or both. The exact source format and protocol determine the right MediaLive input; AWS distinguishes push and pull input workflows, so establish which side initiates the connection before configuring either end (AWS: Creating inputs; AWS: Push and pull AWS Cloud inputs).
- Document the source protocol, format, credentials, and whether it pushes to AWS or MediaLive pulls from it.
- Choose a Region after checking that MediaLive and all required supporting services are available there.
- Decide whether one output pipeline is sufficient or whether the design calls for two pipelines and duplicate destinations.
- Create or identify the YouTube live event and obtain its current ingestion address and stream name. Treat the stream key as a secret.
- Set an operating and monitoring plan: a 24/7 channel needs someone or something able to respond when its source or destination fails.
Choose an AWS Region in India—and check the whole design
AWS lists MediaLive in Asia Pacific (Mumbai), ap-south-1, and Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), ap-south-2. That listing confirms MediaLive availability, not the availability of every companion service you might add. Check each service against AWS’s current regional service list before settling on an architecture, and check your account’s Service Quotas for current limits or a request path (AWS: MediaLive endpoints and quotas).
Region choice can affect service availability, price, and the path between your source and AWS. Do not assume that packaging, storage, logging, or content delivery must be included: include a supporting service only if your design uses it, and confirm its regional availability separately.

Create the input before the channel
MediaLive requires an input to exist before you create a channel. The input connects the upstream source to MediaLive, and its type depends on how that source sends video (AWS input setup).
- Coordinate both ends. Configure the upstream encoder or feed for the protocol and connection approach you selected. For a push input, the upstream system initiates delivery; for a pull input, MediaLive connects to the source. AWS documents the push/pull distinction and RTMP push handshake behavior in its input guidance (AWS: Push and pull AWS Cloud inputs).
- Create a matching MediaLive input. In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, create the input type that matches the source. Do not choose an input type solely because it is convenient in the console; it must match the source protocol and connection behavior.
- Apply the connection details at the source. Use the endpoint or connection information MediaLive supplies, following the selected input’s instructions. Keep credentials and connection details private where applicable.
- Confirm the source can reach AWS. Before building the rest of the channel, verify that the upstream feed is configured to connect and that network rules, credentials, and source output are correct.
Create the channel and choose its pipeline class
When the input is ready, create a MediaLive channel and associate that input. The channel setup includes a MediaLive role, channel class, input specification, and output configuration (AWS: Complete channel and input details).

| Channel class | Pipelines and destinations | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Single-pipeline | One pipeline; each output goes to one destination. | When one pipeline and one destination per output meet the channel’s availability requirements. |
| Standard | Two pipelines; each output is delivered to two downstream destinations. | When the design needs pipeline redundancy and can use two downstream destinations for each output. |
A Standard channel is not automatically a complete failover plan: the source, destination configuration, and operator response still matter. Nor is Single-pipeline inherently wrong for a 24/7 channel; it offers fewer pipeline and destination paths. Choose based on the failure tolerance you need, the source and destination design you can support, and the resulting cost. AWS describes the class behavior but does not prescribe one class for every continuous channel (AWS: Channel class).
Configure a YouTube output
Create an RTMP output group and configure its destination with the ingestion information for the YouTube live stream. YouTube distinguishes the ingestion URL from the stream name; its live-stream API can provide primary and backup RTMPS ingestion addresses (Google for Developers: LiveStreams API). MediaLive’s channel API exposes destination URL and stream-name fields (AWS: Channels API reference).

- In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the ingestion address and stream name for the event you intend to use. Prefer RTMPS where the YouTube ingest settings offer it.
- In the MediaLive channel output destination, enter the YouTube-provided address and stream name in their respective fields. Do not paste a sample server address or sample key from documentation into a production channel.
- If configuring a Standard channel, account for its two downstream destinations. Use the addresses and arrangement appropriate to the YouTube stream setup; do not assume that two MediaLive destinations can be populated with the same value without checking the intended YouTube configuration.
- Keep the stream name/key out of public notes, screenshots, source code, and shared chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings before relying on it again.
Match the encoder settings to the source and YouTube
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube lists recommended bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise of picture quality or a substitute for checking the selected MediaLive output profile and the source’s capacity (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; settings page checked 2026-10-03).
| Setting | Practical target | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; prefer RTMPS when available for the YouTube ingest. | Use the address YouTube supplies for this stream and confirm it matches the destination configuration. |
| Video codec | H.264. | Confirm the output is configured for a codec YouTube accepts and that MediaLive supports in the selected output profile. |
| Rate control | CBR. | Set a stable bitrate appropriate to the resolution, frame rate, and source; check YouTube’s current table for other profiles. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. | Match the source rather than selecting a higher rate than it provides. |
| Keyframes | Two-second interval recommended; no more than four seconds. | Set the keyframe interval to the corresponding frame count for your chosen frame rate and verify the output behavior. |
| 1080p H.264 bitrate examples | 10 Mbps at 30 fps; 12 Mbps at 60 fps. | These are YouTube’s recommendations. Confirm the source, output profile, and network path can sustain the selected setting. |
For a game feed, test representative movement, scene changes, and audio—not just a static menu. Choose a resolution and bitrate supported by both your actual source and the MediaLive output profile. The listed 1080p values should not be extrapolated into an unsupported 4K bitrate; consult YouTube’s current guidance for the profile you intend to use.

Start with a test and verify the viewer-facing stream
- Start the upstream source and confirm it is sending the expected video and audio.
- Start the MediaLive channel and check that its input and output become healthy in the AWS console.
- Use the YouTube live preview and inspect stream health messages before making the event public.
- Check the actual viewer-facing live event on a separate device or connection. Confirm video, audio, frame rate, and latency are acceptable for the channel’s purpose.
- Keep monitoring stream health during operation. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and checking its health messages during the stream (YouTube encoder settings and monitoring guidance).
Do not treat a successful channel start as proof that the entire chain is stable. A source can stop sending, a destination can reject ingest, or the viewer-facing event can have a problem after the AWS channel has started. Define who will inspect alarms and health messages and what they should do when an input or output fails.

There is no reliable universal monthly price for a 24/7 MediaLive-to-YouTube channel based on the title alone. The cost depends on the selected profile, Region, how long it runs, and which additional services and audience delivery components the architecture uses. AWS’s deployment guide presents a particular US East (N. Virginia) scenario, not an India price for this channel (AWS: Plan your deployment—Live Streaming on AWS).

For a useful estimate, list the actual channel and output profile, continuous operating hours, channel class, supporting AWS services, storage or logging if used, expected viewer traffic, and delivery volume. Then calculate those components with current prices for the selected Regions. Check account quotas as well: a design that requires limits your account does not currently have may need a quota request. Do not multiply an unrelated event estimate into a 24/7 India bill.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- The channel cannot be created with the chosen input: confirm the input already exists and is associated with the channel. Recheck that its type matches the upstream protocol and source format.
- MediaLive does not receive the source: check whether the workflow is push or pull, then verify the upstream target or pull address, credentials, network access, and source output. For a push workflow, make sure the source follows the expected connection handshake.
- YouTube rejects the ingest or stays offline: verify the ingestion URL and stream name are from the intended YouTube event, correctly assigned to the destination fields, and still valid. Do not substitute example credentials.
- The picture stutters or stream health reports issues: compare the selected bitrate and frame rate with the actual source and available path capacity. Check that rate control is CBR and the keyframe interval meets YouTube’s guidance; test again with moving content.
- Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong: inspect the source audio and MediaLive output audio configuration, then test a representative program feed in YouTube preview.
- A Standard channel does not provide the expected resilience: verify that its two pipelines are configured to reach the intended two downstream destinations and that the YouTube-side arrangement supports them. Two pipelines alone do not resolve source failure or monitoring gaps.
- A required AWS component is unavailable or blocked: recheck regional availability and account Service Quotas for that specific service. MediaLive’s Mumbai or Hyderabad listing does not establish availability of the rest of the architecture.
