To stream a recorded Hindi sermon as a YouTube Live broadcast from Ubuntu, install FFmpeg, create a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then send the sermon file to YouTube at playback speed with FFmpeg. Use a private stream key, match the output settings to YouTube’s current ingest recommendations, and confirm that Live Control Room receives clear, synchronized audio and video before the service.

What this setup does

The sermon is a recording, but YouTube receives it as a live broadcast: FFmpeg reads the file in real time and sends it to YouTube’s live ingest endpoint. This is different from uploading a video for on-demand playback. Starting FFmpeg successfully does not by itself confirm YouTube is receiving a healthy stream; check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.

No Hindi-specific encoder setting is established in YouTube’s published ingest guidance. Focus on intelligible Hindi audio, correct synchronization, and stable video delivery.

Install and check FFmpeg on Ubuntu

Ubuntu provides FFmpeg through its package archive. Package versions vary by Ubuntu release and updates: Ubuntu’s Jammy package listing, for example, shows version 4.4.2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1; that is a Jammy-specific record, not a claim about other releases. After installation, check the version and whether the expected encoders are available.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Refresh package information: sudo apt update.
  2. Install FFmpeg: sudo apt install ffmpeg.
  3. Check the installed build: ffmpeg -version.
  4. Check for the H.264 and AAC encoders used in the example below: ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'libx264| aac'. If an encoder is missing, review the available encoders in your installed build and choose an available compatible option before the event.

See Ubuntu’s Jammy FFmpeg package listing for the release-specific example.

Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you will use for the sermon.
  2. Copy the stream’s ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS ingest URL when your FFmpeg build and the endpoint support it.
  3. Keep the real stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a public script, shell-history example, screenshot, or message. Put it in the command only when you are ready to send the stream.

YouTube’s instructions for streaming with an encoder cover Live Control Room setup, ingest details, and stream-key handling. Plain RTMP is not equally secure; prefer RTMPS when available.

Inspect the sermon file and choose output settings

Before deciding whether to transcode or copy the source streams, inspect the file. Replace the filename as needed:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i "sermon.mp4"

Check that the file contains the expected video and audio streams, and note their codecs, resolution, and frame rate. Listen for clear audio and verify that speech stays synchronized with the picture. The available information about YouTube’s accepted ingest codecs cannot determine whether stream copying will work for an individual file; that depends on the file’s actual streams and the selected output container.

Transcode for control

The command below encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC, giving you control over the output frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. It is a template, not a tested command for every Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, sermon file, or YouTube account. This example targets H.264 at 1080p30: YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for that combination. The example uses 5 Mbps, so adjust it to a suitable value for your stream and available upload capacity.

ffmpeg -re -i "sermon.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "<YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"

Replace <YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL> and <STREAM_KEY> with the values for your stream. Do not share the completed command if it exposes the key.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • -re paces file input at its native playback speed, rather than sending the recording as fast as FFmpeg can read it.
  • -r 30 sets the output frame rate to 30 fps. Match the output to the source and your stream plan rather than assuming every recording is 30 fps.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, which is a two-second interval at 30 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 60 fps, use a 120-frame GOP for the same two-second interval.
  • -b:v sets the target video bitrate; -maxrate and -bufsize configure rate control. YouTube recommends CBR, but exact rate-control behavior depends on the encoder and FFmpeg build. Consult the installed encoder’s help if strict CBR is required.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for audio ingest; use a setting that preserves clear, intelligible sermon audio.
  • -f flv selects the FLV muxer used in FFmpeg’s documented RTMP publishing pattern.

For other output choices, follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings. Its H.264 table lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p60, compared with 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30. The appropriate bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the table for your chosen combination rather than reusing the 1080p30 example.

Stream copy only when the source is suitable

Using -c:v copy -c:a copy can avoid re-encoding and reduce CPU use, but it is appropriate only when the source codecs and streams are compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest and output container. Check the file with ffprobe first. If you do not know whether the source is compatible, use a tested transcode configuration rather than assuming stream copy will work.

Test the broadcast and monitor stream health

  1. Before the service, start a private or unlisted test stream, or use the channel’s available test workflow.
  2. Confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube receives both video and audio. Watch the preview and listen for intelligibility, clipping, silence, or audio-picture delay.
  3. Use representative moving video and sermon audio in the test. A still or silent section does not reveal every issue.
  4. Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators before the service and monitor them during the broadcast.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. A running FFmpeg process is not proof of successful delivery at YouTube’s end.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube shows no incoming stream: Check that the stream is started in Live Control Room, the ingest URL and key belong to the selected stream, and there are no typing errors. Keep the key private while checking it.
  • RTMPS connection fails: Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build and the selected ingest endpoint support the RTMPS URL. Consult YouTube’s current ingest options; do not treat plain RTMP as equally secure.
  • The file plays too quickly: Make sure -re appears before the file input, as in -re -i "sermon.mp4". It tells FFmpeg to read the file at playback speed.
  • Audio is missing or the wrong stream is being sent: Recheck the file’s streams with ffprobe -hide_banner -i "sermon.mp4", then confirm the incoming audio in Live Control Room. If the file has an unusual stream layout, select the intended audio stream explicitly before streaming.
  • The stream is unstable or video quality suffers: Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and compare the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with its current encoder settings. The 1080p30 bitrate in the example is not a universal setting.
  • FFmpeg reports an unavailable encoder: Check ffmpeg -encoders on the installed build. The command’s H.264/AAC options require the corresponding encoders; do not assume every Ubuntu package build has identical capabilities.
  • Audio and picture are out of sync: Check whether the source file is synchronized before sending it, then verify the test stream in YouTube’s preview. A successful connection does not fix a source file that is already out of sync.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you need a prerecorded sermon to keep looping as a YouTube stream without leaving an Ubuntu computer running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
