To connect FileZilla to a Nintendo Switch, first run an FTP server on the console, then connect FileZilla Client on your computer to the Switch’s local IP address. For the sys-ftpd background server, the documented default port is 5000. This method requires a compatible Switch homebrew or custom-firmware environment; FileZilla is the computer-side client, not the Switch-side server.
What you need
- A Nintendo Switch running a compatible homebrew environment and an FTP server.
- FileZilla Client installed on your Windows, macOS, or Linux computer. Get the client from the official FileZilla project website; you do not need FileZilla Server.
- The Switch’s local IP address and the FTP server’s port. If you use authenticated access, you also need its username and password.
- A local network that lets the computer reach the Switch.
The current sys-ftpd project runs as a background service and was previously called sys-ftpd-light. The separate ftpd application is another option. These are Switch-side FTP servers; FileZilla connects to one of them.
Configure the Switch FTP server
Use authenticated access with sys-ftpd
The documented sys-ftpd configuration file is sdmc:/config/sys-ftpd/config.ini. Back it up before editing. Releases or forks can have different file contents, so preserve the existing section names and adjust the values rather than replacing the whole file blindly.

anonymous:=0With anonymous:=0, connect using the configured username and password. Choose a password that is not used for an important online account. The sys-ftpd project warns that anonymous mode (anonymous:=1) allows anyone on the network to connect; avoid it except, if needed, for a brief test on a network you control.

Make sure the sysmodule is installed and running in the appropriate homebrew environment. The project documents PLUS+MINUS+X as its default pause shortcut unless the setting has been changed or disabled. If FileZilla cannot connect, check whether the service is paused. If you use the separate ftpd application, launch it and use the address and port it shows; do not assume its port or interface matches sys-ftpd.
Keep the connection on a trusted local network
Ordinary FTP is unencrypted: credentials and file transfers are not protected by TLS. Use it only on a trusted local network, prefer username-and-password access, and stop or disable the server when you are finished. Do not forward the FTP port from your router or expose the server to the internet.

Find the Switch’s IP address
- On the Switch, open System Settings → Internet → Connection Status.
- Record the displayed IP address, such as
192.168.1.42. The sys-ftpd project points users to this screen. - Enter only the address in FileZilla’s Host field. Do not add
ftp://,http://, or a folder path; enter the port separately.
The computer and Switch need to be reachable on the same local network. The address may change after reconnecting to Wi-Fi or restarting the console, so check it again if a saved connection later stops working. Guest Wi-Fi client isolation, a VPN, a restrictive network, or a computer firewall can prevent local access. Internet access and port forwarding are not needed.
Set up a FileZilla site
In FileZilla Client, open File → Site Manager, choose New site, and enter the settings below. Labels can vary slightly by operating system or FileZilla version.

Choose FTP, not SFTP or FTPS. SFTP requires an SSH server, and FTPS requires TLS support; the documented sys-ftpd setup is ordinary FTP. Port 5000 is sys-ftpd’s documented default, not a universal port for every Switch FTP server. FileZilla’s Site Manager instructions distinguish FTP, FTPS, and SFTP. Its network configuration guide explains FTP’s separate command and data connections.
Passive mode is the best first choice because it is generally more compatible with firewalls and routers. Start with one simultaneous transfer to reduce load and make connection issues easier to diagnose; it is a practical starting point, not a stated universal limit.

Connect and transfer a test file
- Click Connect in Site Manager. If FileZilla warns that the connection is not encrypted, proceed only if you are using the trusted local network described above.
- After a successful login, look for a directory listing in the remote-site pane on the right. The left pane shows files on your computer. The remote paths shown depend on the server and environment; there is no single folder layout to assume.
- Choose a small, noncritical file and drag it between panes to test an upload or download. Check FileZilla’s transfer queue to confirm that the test completed successfully.
- When finished, wait for active transfers to complete, then disconnect in FileZilla and stop or pause the Switch FTP service if you do not need it running.
FileZilla does not mount the Switch as a Windows drive. Manage files through its remote-site pane, and transfer only files you own or are authorized to manage. Back up important configuration or save-related files before replacing or deleting them.

Troubleshoot connection and transfer problems

When to use another transfer method
For repeated access, sys-ftpd’s background service is convenient and described by its project as lightweight. For occasional use or large transfers, the project points to the separate ftpd app, which must be launched when needed and may use a different port. If an FTP connection remains unreliable, a direct SD-card workflow is another option when it suits the files and console setup. Whichever method you use, keep backups of important data and avoid exposing FTP beyond your trusted local network.
