How to Set Up Larix Broadcaster for a YouTube Always-On Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send a phone camera feed to YouTube Live with Larix Broadcaster, first create or select a YouTube stream, then add its server URL and stream key as a Larix connection and publish in video-plus-audio mode. This can support an extended broadcast while the phone, app, power and network keep working; it is not a guaranteed unattended 24/7 setup. Larix documents Android background streaming, but its iOS background mode is audio-only, so an iPhone cannot keep sending camera video after Larix is backgrounded or the phone is locked.

Before you start

  • A phone or tablet with Larix Broadcaster installed and a reliable internet connection.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • The server URL and stream key for the YouTube stream you intend to use.

Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to that stream. Do not include a real key in screenshots or share it while troubleshooting.

Set up YouTube Live and Larix

  1. Enable YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or select one in Live Control Room. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the selected stream. YouTube’s live-streaming help explains the workflow.
  2. Add a connection in Larix. Open Larix Broadcaster settings, go to Connections, and add a connection. Softvelum’s setup guide describes combining the YouTube server URL and stream key in a single Connection URL. Its example uses rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2 followed by a slash and the key, but use the URL displayed in your own Live Control Room rather than relying on that example endpoint. See Larix connection setup documentation.
  3. Choose video and audio. Set the connection to video-plus-audio mode for a normal camera broadcast. Softvelum explicitly recommends this mode for YouTube connections. Check Larix’s FAQ for platform and connection notes.
  4. Use RTMPS if available and supported. YouTube supports RTMPS, which encrypts the transport with TLS/SSL. In Live Control Room, select the RTMPS URL if offered, then confirm that your Larix version accepts it. Use YouTube’s supplied URL; do not guess an RTMPS endpoint. RTMP is the documented basic setup route. YouTube explains encoder settings and RTMPS here.
  5. Start publishing and verify the feed. Start the Larix connection. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview or status; a scheduled stream may need a separate confirmation before it is live to viewers. Check picture, sound, bitrate behavior and dropped frames during a short preflight.
  6. Stop cleanly. Stop publishing in Larix, then end the stream in YouTube Studio where applicable.

Choose stream settings that fit the phone and uplink

Do not treat one bitrate number as right for every setup. Larix describes configured bitrate as a target; network trouble can cause frame loss for RTMP/RTSP, and adaptive bitrate options may be available depending on protocol and platform. Its resolution-based defaults are vendor settings, not universal YouTube requirements or a guarantee of performance. Follow YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, then validate the selected resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate on the actual phone and upload connection. Larix’s FAQ describes its bitrate behavior and defaults.

For a fixed camera position, a tripod or phone holder can help keep framing steady, but it is optional and does not address app suspension, heat, power loss, network interruption or YouTube session handling.

Can Larix keep a YouTube camera stream running 24/7?

Not as a documented guarantee. Larix is a mobile encoder for phone and tablet cameras, and Softvelum lists YouTube Live as a supported destination. A long broadcast is possible while the device remains operational and continues sending data, but the available documentation does not promise uninterrupted 24-hour operation.

Android and iPhone behave differently in the background

  • Android: Larix’s FAQ says streaming can continue when the app is in the background until the app is explicitly closed. Device-specific behavior can still vary, so test the actual phone, app version and settings.
  • iOS: Larix says background mode cannot access the camera or encoder and permits audio only. Keep Larix foregrounded for camera video; do not assume video continues after backgrounding or locking the phone.

Long broadcasts need an end-to-end test

Before relying on a phone for an unattended installation, test the complete setup: continuous power, thermal behavior, network resilience, recovery after app or device restart, and the YouTube session and archive workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not proof that every stream is stopped at 12 hours or that a single archive will preserve an uninterrupted broadcast beyond that point. See YouTube’s encoder and archiving guidance.

Troubleshoot a missing preview or unstable stream

  • No incoming preview: Confirm that Larix is publishing to the intended connection and that its URL and key match the stream currently selected in YouTube Live Control Room. Check video-plus-audio mode and the phone’s internet connection.
  • Do not share the key to get help: Redact it from screenshots and recordings. Recheck the values privately against Live Control Room.
  • Video stops when the app is left: On iOS, background camera video is not supported by Larix’s documented background mode. On Android, confirm the app was not explicitly closed and test the behavior on the specific device.
  • Dropped frames or inconsistent bitrate: Check the real upload connection and reduce the stream demands or use an appropriate adaptive bitrate option if available for that protocol and platform. Re-test with the intended resolution, frame rate and codec rather than assuming the configured target will be sustained.
  • RTMPS connection fails: Confirm that you copied YouTube’s RTMPS URL and that the installed Larix version supports it. If not, use the RTMP URL displayed by YouTube.
