For an Indian YouTube creator, the simplest membership alert is YouTube’s built-in “New member” message in live chat. To show a custom visual alert on the video, connect Streamlabs Alert Box or a StreamElements overlay to the channel and add it to your streaming scene. First make sure memberships are enabled in YouTube Studio; then test the alert in the same scene and encoder setup used for the always-on stream.
Check that YouTube memberships are enabled
In YouTube Studio, open Earn > Memberships. If the channel is eligible and the option appears, select Get started, follow the prompts to set up membership levels and perks, and accept the Commerce Product Module. Memberships may take up to two days to activate after YPP acceptance while YouTube reviews the channel against feature requirements. YouTube’s activation instructions explain the workflow.
The expanded YouTube Partner Program entry path currently lists 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. These are YPP entry thresholds, not a guarantee that memberships are enabled for a particular channel. Memberships also require the creator to be at least 18, live in a country where the feature is available, accept the Commerce Product Module, and meet channel-specific criteria. Choose how members will be recognized
YouTube’s built-in live-chat message
When someone joins while the stream is live, YouTube posts a bright green “New member” message in live chat and pins the member’s profile picture at the top of chat for five minutes. This requires no external alert service and is visible in chat, rather than as a custom animation over the video. YouTube does not notify the creator when someone joins while the creator is offline. YouTube’s membership benefit guidance describes the chat message, and its membership management instructions note the offline-notification limit.

Custom on-screen alerts
Use an external alert overlay if you want a member event to appear over the video. Streamlabs and StreamElements both document YouTube membership alert paths. Choose based on the service you already use, the appearance and event variations you need, and whether its widget works in your encoder scene; the available documentation does not establish a general reliability winner.
Set up a Streamlabs member alert
- Connect the correct YouTube channel. Link the channel in Streamlabs and confirm the connected account is the one with memberships enabled.
- Configure the event. Open Alert Box in the Streamlabs dashboard and configure the YouTube Members event, including its visual and audio behavior. Streamlabs also documents membership-related variations, including gifting.
- Add the alert to your encoder. In Streamlabs Desktop or OBS, add the Alert Box widget as a source. In other software, use the widget URL as a browser source if supported. Place it above the video layer in the scene that is actually being broadcast.
- Test before relying on it. Use Streamlabs’ test function and check that the visual and audio alert appear as intended. Follow Streamlabs’ alert setup instructions and its YouTube alert guide. For gifting variations, see its membership-gifting alert documentation.
Set up a StreamElements member alert
- Sign in with YouTube. Use the account connected to the channel whose membership events you want to show.
- Customize an overlay. In the StreamElements overlay editor, configure the pop-up alert for newest YouTube members and any desired visual or audio treatment.
- Add it to the streaming scene. Add the overlay to OBS with SE.live, or use its browser source in other software that supports browser sources. Keep the source in the active scene and above the video layer.
- Test in the actual setup. Check the overlay’s visual and audio behavior using your normal encoder scene. StreamElements describes its YouTube member pop-up overlays and browser-source setup. YouTube also points creators to third-party integrations for Super Chat and channel memberships.
Validate alerts in a 24/7 setup
An overlay’s documented setup does not guarantee that an alert will arrive through every encoder restart or stream interruption. The available product documentation does not specify whether queued alerts recover after an outage. Validate the behavior in the configuration you actually use, and repeat the test when you change scenes or reconnect the encoder.

- Confirm the widget or browser source is in the live scene, visible above the video, and connected to the right YouTube channel.
- Check that the member event is enabled and that the alert’s audio and visual elements behave as intended.
- Test after a scene change and after reconnecting the encoder, not only when first setting up the overlay.
- Do not promise viewers that an on-stream alert will appear if the channel is offline or the encoder is unavailable.
