In OBS Studio, select your microphone’s audio source, open its Filters, and add only the processing that solves a problem you can hear: suppression for mild steady noise, a gate or expander for noise between phrases, compression for loud peaks, and a limiter to cap the output. Then test the chain in a local recording or an unlisted YouTube stream. Filter settings depend on your microphone, room, speaking distance, and voice level; there is no reliable universal preset.
Before adding filters, improve the sound at the microphone
Choose the quietest practical location and check for steady noise from fans, appliances, traffic, or wind. YouTube recommends using a microphone to improve audio, but filters process the sound after it is captured: they cannot fully compensate for loud environmental noise or poor microphone placement. If a noise is prominent in an unprocessed recording, reducing it at the source is usually a better first move than stacking stronger filters.
If you do not have an external microphone, a USB microphone is one possible category to consider; the available guidance does not establish a best model. Headphones are optional for this setup, but can help you hear noise and processing artifacts while monitoring.
How do I set up mic filters in OBS for YouTube?
- Choose the active microphone. In OBS Studio, speak and watch the Audio Mixer to identify the microphone or auxiliary channel whose meter responds. If the wrong input is selected, its filters will not process the microphone you intend to use.
- Open that input’s filters. In the Audio Mixer, open the microphone/auxiliary channel’s gear menu and choose Filters. Alternatively, right-click the relevant source in the Sources list and choose Filters. OBS supports filters attached to sources, audio devices, or scenes; for a microphone chain, confirm that you are editing the input that shows activity when you speak.
- Add a filter only when it addresses an audible problem. In the Filters window, use the add control and choose the needed filter type. OBS’s available audio filters include Noise Suppression, Noise Gate, Expander, Compressor, Gain, and Limiter.
- Listen after each change. Speak at your normal distance and volume, pause between phrases, and make a test recording. Change one filter at a time so you can tell whether it improved the sound or introduced an artifact.
These menu steps and filter names are for OBS Studio. The available guidance does not establish matching menus or filter availability in Streamlabs, XSplit, hardware mixers, or other encoders.

Which OBS filter should you use?
| Filter | Use it for | What to listen for |
|---|---|---|
| Noise Suppression | Mild, steady background or white noise. | Too much suppression can make speech sound robotic, watery, muffled, or otherwise damaged. It is generally ineffective against large amounts of noise in a loud room. |
| Noise Gate | Reducing or silencing sound while you are not speaking. | A gate can cut off quiet words, breaths, or the beginnings and ends of phrases if its thresholds are set too aggressively. Its action is fixed rather than smoothly adjustable like an expander. |
| Expander | Reducing quieter signals more gradually, often as an alternative to a gate. | It can produce a smoother opening and closing than a gate, but an overly high threshold can still cut off speech. Its ratio is adjustable. |
| Compressor | Reducing loud peaks so they are less prominent relative to quieter speech. | Heavy compression can make levels sound unnatural or pump audibly. It does not remove the underlying room noise. |
| Limiter | Capping the final output to prevent peaks from exceeding its threshold. | If it engages constantly, the signal may be too hot earlier in the chain or its threshold may be unsuitable. |
| Gain | Adjusting the level of a source when needed. | Adding gain raises the wanted voice and noise together; it does not repair clipping that already occurred at the microphone or input stage. |
How do I reduce background noise without damaging my voice?
Start with modest suppression for steady noise
OBS describes Noise Suppression as a way to remove mild background noise or white noise. Start with the least aggressive setting that makes the noise less distracting, then compare the result with the filter off. If your voice becomes robotic, watery, or muffled, reduce the strength or remove the filter and address the room noise instead.
OBS offers RNNoise and Speex suppression options. OBS notes that RNNoise is higher quality but uses more CPU than Speex; Speex can be adjusted, but stronger suppression can distort the voice. The choice is a trade-off, not a universal recommendation: listen to the result on your system and microphone.

Use a gate or expander for pauses, not constant noise
A gate is intended to close when you are not speaking, reducing sound between phrases. An expander reduces low-level audio more gradually, and its adjustable ratio can make the transition smoother. Neither one removes noise under your voice while the filter is open.
For a gate, OBS’s guidance is to set the close threshold above the noise floor and the open threshold slightly below your voice level. Speak quietly as well as at your normal level while tuning; if quiet words disappear or phrase beginnings are clipped, lower the threshold or soften the gate’s behavior.

For an expander, OBS suggests a 4:1 ratio as a possible balance, an attack of 5–10 ms, and a release of 50–120 ms. These are OBS’s starting recommendations, not guaranteed settings for every microphone. Do not raise the threshold so far that speech is cut off. Adjust while listening to your actual voice and room.
Choose the least processing that fixes the problem
If noise is audible only in pauses, a gate or expander may be more relevant than stronger suppression. If the noise continues underneath speech, a gate will not solve it; first reduce the environmental noise, and use only modest suppression if appropriate. Avoid combining aggressive suppression, a hard gate, and heavy compression to disguise an untreated room: that combination can damage speech while leaving the original cause in place.

How do I stop my microphone from clipping?
Clipping is distortion caused when the signal exceeds what the input or processing stage can handle. A limiter can cap the output of the filter chain, but it cannot restore audio that clipped before reaching it. Check the microphone and input level as well as the processed output, and listen for distorted syllables during your loudest realistic speech.
OBS recommends placing a compressor near the beginning of the filter chain to reduce loud peaks and a limiter last to prevent peaks from exceeding its threshold. Add them only if your voice has a problem they can address. Listen for sudden level changes or audible pumping, and keep the voice natural; no universal YouTube microphone-filter loudness target is established here.

Test the complete path before going public
- Record locally or schedule an unlisted live stream. YouTube recommends testing audio, video, and equipment with an unlisted stream before broadcasting publicly.
- Recreate the real stream. Use the same microphone, speaking distance, voice level, and room conditions you expect during the broadcast. Include speech at normal and louder levels, pauses, and any movement typical of your stream.
- Check both voice and pauses. Confirm that quiet words and phrase endings remain intact, pauses are quieter if intended, and loud syllables do not distort or trigger obvious pumping.
- Monitor the preview and stream health. Do not rely only on how the OBS meters look; listen to the recording or preview so you can catch artifacts. Make adjustments before changing the stream to public.
Troubleshooting common microphone-filter problems
| What you hear | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The noise remains loud even with suppression. | The room noise is too strong or variable for suppression to handle well. | Reduce the noise source, change location or microphone placement, then use only modest suppression for any remaining mild steady noise. |
| Speech sounds robotic, watery, or muffled. | Noise suppression is too strong or is not suitable for the noise. | Reduce suppression or turn it off and compare. Consider a different OBS suppression option, keeping in mind RNNoise uses more CPU than Speex. |
| First or last syllables disappear. | A gate or expander threshold is too high or its timing is too abrupt for your speech. | Lower the threshold and test quiet words, phrase starts, and phrase endings again. For an expander, use OBS’s suggested timing ranges as starting points rather than fixed requirements. |
| Noise is audible between phrases. | The microphone is capturing room noise while you are silent, or no pause control is in use. | Reduce the noise at its source. If the room is otherwise quiet while you speak, tune a gate or expander so it reduces pauses without cutting speech. |
| Some words distort or sound clipped. | The microphone or input may be overloading before the limiter, or the output chain may peak. | Reduce the source/input level if it is overloading; then assess the chain and use a limiter last to cap output peaks. A limiter cannot repair distortion already recorded at an earlier stage. |
| Levels audibly pump or jump. | Compression may be too heavy, or multiple filters may be interacting. | Reduce compression or remove unnecessary processing, then listen to a fresh recording with one change at a time. |
| Filters make no difference to the intended microphone. | The filters may be attached to a different source or device. | Speak while watching the Audio Mixer, identify the moving microphone channel, and open Filters for that input. |
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS microphone filters are for processing a live microphone input. StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping an uploaded recording or playlist live on YouTube around the clock; it does not go live from a camera and is not a microphone-filter replacement. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. For a prerecorded YouTube channel, see StreamNeo or start the free first day.
