The available evidence does not establish that any particular OVHcloud plan is suitable. Once those prerequisites check out, install OBS for the VPS’s Linux distribution, configure a scene and YouTube stream key, choose YouTube-supported encoder settings, then test and monitor the full setup before relying on it.
Check the VPS before installing OBS
OBS has Linux installation instructions and lists OpenGL 3.3 compatibility plus X Window System or Wayland among its requirements. Those requirements do not establish that a cloud VPS image provides a usable display or graphics environment. Nor do they show that a particular VPS can encode your chosen scene continuously.
Before choosing a plan or deploying the stream, check the current OVHcloud specifications and terms for the exact image and VPS you intend to use. Confirm that it can:
- Run a Linux desktop/display stack that meets OBS’s requirements.
- Handle the scene, resolution, frame rate and encoding method you plan to use with enough sustained compute capacity.
- Maintain enough outbound network capacity for the stream, with room for normal variation rather than only a brief peak.
- Support your intended continuous media-streaming use under the provider’s current terms.
These are checks to make against the current plan, image and provider terms; no specific OVHcloud tier or network limit is established here. A VPS that can install OBS is not automatically one that can encode and transmit your program reliably around the clock.

Install OBS on the VPS’s Linux distribution
Use the installation instructions for the distribution and version actually running on your VPS. OBS’s Linux installation article recommends Flathub for distributions other than Ubuntu and provides Ubuntu package instructions, but that article is dated 2021. Check the current OBS and distribution guidance before using package commands; do not assume an old command is appropriate for a newer image.
After installation, make sure OBS can launch in the VPS’s display environment. If the image is headless or lacks a compatible display stack, resolve that before proceeding: the fact that OBS supports Linux does not mean every server image can run it as configured.

Build and test the OBS scene
- Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use its suggested settings as a starting point, not as a guarantee that the VPS can sustain a 24/7 broadcast.
- Add the sources your program needs. For example, add the video and audio sources that make up the intended presentation. Confirm that they appear and behave as expected in the preview.
- Check audio in the mixer. Play representative program audio and make sure the relevant meters respond. A scene that looks correct but sends no usable audio is not ready to go live.
- Review output settings. Choose a resolution, frame rate, encoder and bitrate that fit YouTube’s supported settings and the VPS’s tested compute and network capacity.
- Run a short test before going live for real. OBS’s Quick Start recommends testing for a few minutes. For a 24/7 plan, treat that as an initial check only; it does not prove long-term stability.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided there. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s connection credential. Keep it private: do not expose it in screenshots, public configuration files or example commands.
- Enter the URL and key in OBS’s streaming connection settings. Use the values for the YouTube stream you selected; do not substitute an unrelated event’s key.
- If the key is exposed, reset it. YouTube provides a reset path for owners and managers in its live-stream workflow. Treat a compromised key like any other leaked credential.
Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. It lists RTMP or RTMPS as protocols; H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Select options that both YouTube and the actual VPS encoding environment can sustain.

These figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. They are not a guarantee that your VPS or its network path can sustain the recommended rate. Select the profile based on stable outbound capacity and available encoding resources. If your link cannot sustain the target, choose a lower bitrate or less demanding output rather than relying on a number that only works intermittently.

Test the stream and watch its health
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public or depending on it.
- Test representative content. Use audio and motion similar to the real program. A static test image may not reveal issues that appear with more movement or sound.
- Watch OBS and YouTube while the test runs. Check that video and audio arrive as intended and look for dropped frames, warnings or other health messages.
- Reduce bitrate if the connection is unstable. OBS troubleshooting guidance notes that dropped frames commonly point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reassess the VPS and network path as well as OBS settings; do not assume every dropped frame is caused by OBS alone.
- Extend testing before treating the setup as 24/7-ready. A successful start or a few minutes without obvious errors is only an initial check, not evidence of continuous reliability.
Plan for YouTube’s long-stream archive and DVR limits
YouTube’s live-stream guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR help guidance says rewind capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A single uninterrupted 24/7 event exceeds both stated duration thresholds, so do not assume it will receive a complete automatic archive or unlimited rewind.
Decide whether viewers need an archive or rewind before settling on one continuous event. If those features matter, plan how sessions will be managed and verify YouTube’s current behavior for your channel and stream; the guidance cited here does not promise a particular archive outcome for a 24/7 broadcast.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
