To stream a church service from a Windows PC, connect the camera and sound-board audio in OBS Studio, link OBS to a YouTube Live event, and choose video settings your PC and the church’s measured upload connection can sustain. Test the full path before relying on it. A single continuous stream is not guaranteed to stay online, and YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
What you need before setting up OBS
OBS Studio sends a live video and audio feed from the church’s computer to YouTube. The computer, capture devices, audio chain, power and internet connection all need to keep working for the stream to continue. No software setting can guarantee uninterrupted service if one of those parts fails.
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. OBS lists these operating systems and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic Windows requirements. Meeting them does not guarantee that the PC can encode your chosen resolution, frame rate and scene effects.
- The church’s camera and a way to bring its video into the PC. This may be a webcam or a camera connected through a compatible capture card.
- A suitable audio feed, preferably from the church’s mixer or sound board, plus the required cable or audio interface to connect it to the PC.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, and permission to use its YouTube Studio and stream key.
- A stable internet connection at the church. Ethernet from the PC to the router is preferable where practical.
YouTube says that first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Enable it and confirm the channel can go live well before the service. Check for live-streaming restrictions and decide who is authorized to access the channel. Treat the stream key like a password: do not include it in a screen capture, show it on the public stream or share it casually.
Install OBS and make a simple church scene
Install and configure OBS
- Download and install OBS Studio for Windows from the OBS Project’s official source. Start OBS and follow its prompts.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard to create a starting setup suited to the PC and connection. Treat the result as a starting point, not proof the system is ready for a long service.
- For a first scene, keep the layout straightforward. Add the church camera using Sources → + → Video Capture Device, then select the correct webcam or capture-card input.
- Add the mixer output or microphone using Sources → + → Audio Input Capture. Select the input connected to the church’s sound system.
- Add only overlays that help viewers, such as the church name, service title or a still welcome screen. Avoid unnecessary animated or GPU-heavy effects until the basic stream is reliable.
Confirm the camera and sermon audio
Check that the preview shows the intended camera and that the framing is clear. Speak into the pulpit microphone and watch the OBS Audio Mixer: its meter should move when speech reaches the selected input. If the church uses a mixer, verify that the output sent to OBS includes the microphones needed for the service and is not muted or set too low.

Headphones can help identify hum, clipping or missing microphones during setup. Do not assume the stream will use the correct device just because the local sound system works. Confirm what reaches a private or unlisted test stream and, if possible, listen from a separate device.
Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate from the actual connection
For a mostly static pulpit camera and spoken-word sermon, 30 frames per second (fps) is a sensible starting point to test. Sixty fps increases encoding and upload demands and often offers little benefit for a static shot. Use a resolution your camera can supply clearly and the PC can encode without overload.
YouTube’s current recommended H.264 ingest bitrates include these options. They are starting points, not guarantees that a particular church connection can sustain them.

These are Google/YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026. YouTube advises testing the connection’s upload speed, leaving about 20% headroom above the stream bitrate and selecting a quality the connection can sustain reliably. Measure at the church, at a time that reflects service conditions; an ISP plan’s advertised speed or a test at home does not establish the upload available at the venue. Shared Wi-Fi or other office traffic may reduce available capacity.
Set OBS output options
- In OBS, open Settings → Output. If needed, change Output Mode to Advanced to expose the streaming encoder settings.
- Choose an H.264 encoder that the PC supports, and set the rate control to CBR (constant bitrate). Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload on compatible hardware; test the available encoder rather than assuming one performs best on every PC.
- Enter a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and frame rate, using YouTube’s recommendations as a guide. Leave the advised upload headroom. If the venue cannot sustain the target, lower the bitrate or output resolution and test again.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- For an uncomplicated beginner setup, use H.264 video and AAC audio. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists other video codecs, but H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS is the straightforward route for this OBS setup.
- In Settings → Video, select the output resolution and frame rate you intend to test. Avoid choosing 60 fps or 1080p simply because the option exists; match the output to the camera, encoding capacity and measured upload.
YouTube’s advanced recommendations include stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz and Rec. 709 for SDR video. Check OBS’s audio and color settings if the feed sounds wrong or colors look noticeably different from the camera image. YouTube transcodes streams for viewing formats, so the encoder bitrate is not a promise that every viewer will receive the stream at that exact quality.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create an event or reuse prior settings.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose the YouTube service if it is available, or enter the server URL and stream key in the fields provided. Apply the settings.
- Start streaming from OBS. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the preview and stream-health information. Follow the event’s current on-screen flow to make the stream live; the confirmation steps can vary with the chosen YouTube workflow.
- Check playback on the public or intended watch page from another device, including a phone. Confirm that viewers can hear the sermon and see the correct camera, not just that OBS shows a preview.
Make the stream more resilient during a long service
Protect the internet connection
Connect the streaming PC to the router by Ethernet when possible. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. If Ethernet is impractical, test the actual Wi-Fi location and service conditions rather than assuming a strong signal guarantees a stable upload.

If OBS reports dropped frames, the network connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce the bitrate, retest, and check the router, network adapter and drivers. If the issue persists, investigate the local network or contact the ISP; OBS notes that dropped-frame problems are typically outside OBS itself.
Watch PC and encoder load
Keep the scene simple and close other demanding applications. If OBS indicates encoding overload, reduce output demands such as resolution or frame rate, remove resource-heavy scene elements, and test a compatible hardware encoder if available. A PC’s basic compatibility with OBS does not establish that it can encode a particular scene continuously.
Plan for local power cuts
If mains interruptions are a concern, a UPS or suitable inverter-and-battery arrangement may keep equipment running for its actual supported runtime. Include the PC and the networking devices needed for the stream: backing up only the computer will not preserve the connection if the modem or router loses power. Before choosing equipment, estimate the combined load and the minutes of backup needed, then check the manufacturer’s runtime information for that load. A UPS is not an internet backup, and no specific capacity or runtime can be recommended without those site measurements.

Arrange monitoring and a fallback
Have someone monitor Live Control Room’s stream health and the public playback during the service. Check both audio and video, not only the OBS preview. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover when a backup encoder is available. A smaller church without a second PC can still assign a person to watch the stream and make a local recording so the sermon is not dependent on the online archive alone.
Will YouTube save a nonstop sermon stream?
Do not count on one complete YouTube replay for a continuous 24/7 feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving every sermon matters, record locally and check that recordings are being saved; monitor available disk space. You can also plan separate scheduled events or segments if archive discoverability matters more than having one uninterrupted event. YouTube has not established a guaranteed reconnect grace period for a stream interrupted by a power or network failure, so do not plan around one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright, permissions and church content
Before streaming or replaying hymns, background music, sermon clips, readings or other material created by someone else, confirm the church has the rights or permissions needed for the intended live stream and any recording. Being a religious service does not by itself establish that every song or recording can be broadcast. Review the copyright safety checklist as a planning aid; it does not replace obtaining the permissions applicable to your content. Also make the stream genuinely useful and original to the church rather than assuming that continuous or repeated playback automatically meets YouTube’s separate channel and monetization policies.

Common OBS-to-YouTube problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | The wrong event, server URL or stream key is set, or OBS has not started sending. | Confirm OBS is streaming, then check that its stream settings match the current event in Live Control Room. Replace the key if it was exposed. |
| OBS preview works but viewers cannot hear the sermon | The wrong audio input is selected, the mixer output is muted, or audio is not reaching OBS. | Speak into the service microphone and watch the Audio Mixer meter. Check the selected input and mixer routing, then listen to a test stream from another device. |
| Viewers hear distortion or clipping | The mixer or input level is too high, or the selected audio feed is unsuitable. | Check the mixer and OBS levels while someone speaks at normal service volume. Adjust the feed and test again before going live. |
| Stream health shows dropped frames | Upload is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Use Ethernet if possible, reduce bitrate, retest at the church, and investigate local network conditions or the ISP if the issue continues. |
| OBS reports encoding overload or the picture stutters | The PC is overloaded by the chosen output or scene complexity. | Simplify the scene, close demanding programs, lower resolution or frame rate, and test a compatible hardware encoder if available. |
| The stream stops during a power interruption | The PC, router or other required networking equipment lost power. | Plan backup power for the combined equipment load and desired runtime. Confirm the modem/router is included; an internet outage itself needs a separate connection fallback. |
| The service played live but no full replay is available | The continuous stream may have exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | Use a local recording and consider shorter event segments when a complete, findable replay is important. |
