You can run a long YouTube broadcast from a low-end PC by keeping the OBS scene simple, starting with 720p at 30 fps, choosing a bitrate your own upload connection can sustain, and testing the full setup before going live. None of those settings guarantees an uninterrupted or indefinite stream: the PC, power, internet route and YouTube ingest connection all matter.
What “continuous” means for an OBS stream
OBS can keep sending an encoder feed while the computer and network remain available, but official guidance does not promise a truly uninterrupted or indefinite single broadcast. For a long session, plan to monitor stream health, protect the PC and network connection from avoidable interruptions, and decide how you will restart if the stream ends.
India does not have one OBS profile or upload-speed figure that guarantees a reliable stream nationwide. Your ISP plan, actual upload performance, local Wi-Fi or Ethernet link, and route to YouTube determine what works from your location. YouTube’s encoder figures are ingestion recommendations, not a measure of Indian broadband reliability.
Check YouTube and PC readiness first
Confirm that your channel can go live
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its general guidance sets a minimum age of 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help before scheduling a broadcast.

OBS compatibility alone does not establish that a particular computer can stream well. OBS notes that performance depends on encoder, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity, and that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming capability. See OBS system requirements.
Find a baseline with OBS
Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard in OBS as an initial estimate, not as proof that the PC can sustain a long broadcast. Then test the actual game or video, scenes and connection you plan to use. A static scene is usually less demanding than a busy game capture with animated overlays, browser sources and filters, so the test should resemble the real broadcast.
Choose a low-load video profile
For a constrained computer, begin with 1280×720 output at 30 fps. This is a practical starting point rather than a universally best or guaranteed setting. If OBS shows rendering or encoding strain, or if the connection cannot sustain the bitrate, step down to 480p30 or 360p30.

| Output profile | YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | More detail, with greater processing and upload demand than lower resolutions. |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps | Lower output resolution, but YouTube’s listed recommended bitrate is higher than for 720p30. |
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps | Least visual detail of these options; YouTube lists the same recommended bitrate as 480p30. |
These are YouTube’s current displayed H.264 recommendations, accessed 2026-10-03; they are not minimums or a guarantee that the selected profile will work on your line. Consult YouTube’s full encoder settings table for other resolutions and codecs.
Set OBS resolution and frame rate
- Open Settings → Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 for the initial test. This is the resolution OBS sends to YouTube and can be lower than the Base (Canvas) Resolution.
- Set Common FPS Values to 30.
- If the PC still struggles, reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution to 854×480 (480p) or 640×360 (360p), then test again.
Changing the canvas resolution is more disruptive because sources may need to be resized and repositioned. Keep the canvas at its current size initially and lower the output resolution first. OBS explains the roles of canvas and output resolution in its overview guide.
Choose an encoder and bitrate the PC and connection can sustain
Hardware encoder or x264
If the PC offers a supported hardware encoder that works well on that machine, try it before assuming the CPU should do all the encoding. Hardware encoding shifts work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Its quality at a given bitrate depends on the encoder generation, however, so older implementations may look worse than newer hardware or x264 at the same bitrate. OBS documents supported options and caveats in Hardware Encoding.

OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC on GeForce 750 Ti / 900 series or newer, with generation-specific caveats; AMD AMF; Intel QSV, with Core-i generation 2xxx supported and 4xxx or newer recommended; and Apple VideoToolbox. Availability depends on the actual computer and installed drivers. Do not buy a graphics card based only on this list: first identify whether the bottleneck is CPU encoding, GPU rendering or the internet connection.
Set bitrate against measured upload
OBS connection troubleshooting suggests using around 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate when troubleshooting. This is general OBS guidance, not an India-specific network rule and not a guarantee. Measure your connection at the place and time you will stream, then test the route to YouTube. Avoid allocating all measured upload capacity to video; other household traffic and variation can cause dropped frames.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Settings → Output and set Output Mode to Advanced if needed to expose the encoder controls.
- Under the streaming output settings, select the encoder you intend to test and set Rate Control to CBR.
- Set the video bitrate in Kbps to a value suitable for the chosen profile and stable upload. YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for H.264 720p30, and 4 Mbps for H.264 480p30 or 360p30; if your stable upload cannot support the selected rate with headroom, lower the bitrate and test or reduce the resolution.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- For audio, select AAC where available and use stereo audio at 128 Kbps, YouTube’s stated stereo recommendation.
YouTube supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 for live ingestion, as well as AAC or MP3 audio. H.264 with AAC is a conservative compatibility choice for a basic OBS setup; use H.265 or AV1 only if your encoder and workflow support them. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed to Google’s servers. See its encoder settings guidance.

Connect OBS to YouTube safely
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding fields in OBS under Settings → Stream. Use YouTube as the service and RTMPS if the provided stream server offers it.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in a screenshot, screen share, public chat or broadcast. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Start the OBS stream and wait for the preview in the Live Control Room. Check stream health and verify representative motion and audio before making the broadcast public.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends preparing the encoder, checking preview and monitoring stream health. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps for the current Studio flow.

Prefer Ethernet when practical
OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Ethernet improves the local connection between the PC and router, but it cannot fix an insufficient ISP upload plan, congestion or an unstable route upstream. If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, test from the exact room and location you will use for the broadcast.
Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter during the test. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection-to-ingest problem; reduce bitrate, try a different server where available, use wired networking if possible, and check network software or drivers. Its connection troubleshooting guide suggests around 75% of total upload capacity as a starting bitrate.

Reduce rendering or encoding load
If OBS reports “encoding overloaded” or the output is choppy, address processing load rather than treating it as a network problem first. OBS recommends lowering output resolution, reducing frame rate (including dropping from 60 fps to 30), simplifying scenes, reducing expensive or high-resolution sources, closing GPU-heavy applications, and capping a game’s frame rate when gaming. On Windows, OBS also suggests trying Run as administrator. Follow the steps in OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
- Use fewer animated overlays, browser sources, filters and high-resolution media sources.
- Close applications that consume CPU or GPU resources while streaming.
- For game capture, cap the game’s frame rate so it does not use all available GPU capacity.
- Change one setting at a time and repeat the test, so you can identify which change improves the result.
Test for a long session and plan around YouTube’s archive limit
Run a private or unlisted test from the same PC, scene, ISP connection and location planned for the real stream. Check the YouTube preview, OBS statistics, audio, motion and stability over a representative period. A short successful test is useful, but cannot prove a much longer session will remain uninterrupted.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder setup guidance does not establish automatic archiving for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, nor does it promise one OBS process will run indefinitely. For a longer broadcast, decide on a controlled restart schedule and monitor stream health. If you need a local copy, test recording separately: recording consumes storage and may add encoder load on a low-end PC. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely area | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS says “encoding overloaded” | Encoding or rendering capacity | Lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, close GPU-heavy applications, cap game frame rate, and try OBS as administrator on Windows. |
| OBS shows dropped frames | Network path to YouTube ingest | Lower video bitrate, use Ethernet if practical, try another ingest server where available, and check network software or drivers. |
| Stream buffers or preview struggles | Upload capacity or stability | Measure upload at the streaming location, reduce bitrate to leave headroom, and test again on the same connection. |
| Image is choppy while OBS reports no network drops | PC load or source complexity | Reduce FPS or resolution, simplify sources, and close competing CPU/GPU applications. |
| Stream does not appear in YouTube preview | Stream setup or key/server details | Confirm the selected stream in Live Control Room, verify the stream URL and key in OBS, then restart the encoder connection. |
| Audio is missing or wrong | OBS audio routing or source settings | Check the active audio source and meters in OBS, test representative content, and confirm audio is enabled before going live. |
YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers’ devices and network conditions, so creators do not need to encode a separate low-bitrate version for each viewer. That is YouTube-specific guidance, not a general rule for other streaming platforms.
