One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can run OBS on a Google Compute Engine (GCE) VM and send a prerecorded video loop to YouTube Live, but the VM needs a usable display context for OBS and enough capacity for the scene and encoder. For a simple loop, evaluate Google Cloud’s virtual-display option before adding a GPU; Google describes virtual displays for applications that need a display device but not GPU performance. The setup below covers the cloud and YouTube decisions, while clearly marking OBS-specific controls that should be verified for your chosen Linux image and OBS version.
Choose the right GCE graphics setup
OBS is a graphical application. On a cloud VM, you need a display context even if nobody is sitting in front of the machine. Google Cloud documents virtual displays for applications that need a display device without GPU performance, and lists screen capture among example uses. That makes a virtual display a reasonable first path to evaluate for a basic prerecorded loop, but it does not establish that every OBS build will work without further configuration.
A GPU is a separate option for graphics-intensive workloads, not a universal requirement established for a prerecorded loop. Google Cloud’s GPU workstation path involves supported machine families and zones, quota, and driver setup. Its documentation lists L4, T4, and P4 options for graphics workstations, but does not specify which GPU OBS needs. Compare the two paths before creating resources:
| Path | When to consider it | Planning considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual display | The OBS scene needs a display device but not GPU performance; a simple prerecorded loop is a candidate to evaluate. | Confirm the selected VM and Linux/OBS configuration provide a usable display context. See Google Cloud’s virtual-display setup. |
| GPU-backed VM | The scene or graphics workload needs GPU acceleration. | Check compatible machine types and zones, GPU quota, drivers, and the added cost. See Google Cloud’s GPU guidance and GPU driver instructions. |
Google’s Linux virtual workstation tutorial gives an example configuration of an E2-standard-4 VM, 16 GB RAM, and a 20 GB balanced boot disk. Treat that as a workstation example, not an OBS minimum or a sizing benchmark.

Create the VM and prepare a display
- Choose a Google Cloud project and enable Compute Engine. Follow Google Cloud’s Linux VM creation guide for the project, API, and Ubuntu instance workflow.
- Select a region, machine, boot disk, and runtime. Size these for the scene and encoder workload you intend to run. The cited workstation example is not a tested OBS requirement; plan to validate your own resource use.
- Choose virtual display or GPU before deployment. If evaluating virtual display, follow Google’s virtual display instructions. If using GPU acceleration, verify the machine-family and zone availability, quota, and OS/driver combination using Google’s GPU setup documentation.
- Install a Linux desktop/display stack and OBS using instructions for your exact image. The official Google pages cited here explain VM and display configuration, not current OBS installation commands. Use the OBS project’s current documentation for the chosen Linux release, then confirm that OBS starts in the VM’s intended display session.
Do not assume that an OBS scene can be rendered in a headless shell just because the VM is running. The display session, OBS process, and any remote-access method must remain available in the way your chosen setup requires.
Configure the video loop in OBS
Once OBS opens in the VM’s display session, add the prerecorded video as a media source and configure that source to restart when playback ends. The exact labels and controls can vary by OBS release, and the Google Cloud documentation does not specify OBS’s loop controls. Verify them against the OBS documentation for the version installed rather than relying on a menu path that may not match your build.

Get YouTube’s stream URL and key
YouTube connects an encoder such as OBS to a live event with a server URL and stream key. First-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete that step before the time you need to start.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the stream you want to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, enter those values in its streaming service/server and stream-key fields. Use the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides it.
- Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as password-like. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder and managing live stream settings.

Set encoder quality and test the stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. Those are YouTube ingestion guidelines, not a guarantee that a particular VM or route will sustain the stream.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate your scene, encoder, VM, and available outbound throughput can sustain.
- Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds, staying within YouTube’s stated maximum of four seconds.
- For 1080p30 H.264, use YouTube’s published 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommendation as the starting guidance; do not infer a different bitrate solely because a loop has little motion.
- Run a stream test with representative video and audio before relying on the setup. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and adjust the encoder if it reports problems.
For other resolution and frame-rate combinations, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The recommendations can change, so check the page when configuring a new stream.

Estimate ongoing GCE costs and plan for continuity
A 24/7 stream incurs more than just VM runtime. Compute Engine charges depend on the selected VM and disk, and outbound data transfer adds cost; Google notes that pricing varies by region and connection method. An exact total cannot be stated without the region, machine, disk, runtime, and transfer assumptions.
- Estimate the chosen VM and boot disk for the full planned runtime using Google Cloud’s pricing tools.
- Include outbound stream traffic for the entire period. A stream sent continuously at a set bitrate consumes data continuously, so bandwidth is a recurring part of the plan.
- If using a GPU, include its resource cost and confirm its zone and quota availability before committing to the design.
- Separately verify how OBS starts after a VM restart, how YouTube reconnects after a dropped connection, and how you will detect a failed stream. The cited documentation does not establish unattended restart automation, continuous uptime, or recovery behavior for a particular OBS setup.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior, not a guarantee that OBS or the VM remains connected continuously; plan any longer-running channel around the limits and behavior documented by YouTube.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not open or has no usable preview | Display session or virtual-display configuration | Confirm the VM has the display context required by the installed OBS build. Recheck Google Cloud’s virtual-display guidance and verify the OBS installation for your Linux image. |
| Scene performance is poor or rendering overload appears | Scene complexity, resolution/frame rate, or graphics capacity | Reduce scene complexity or output demands and re-test. If the workload genuinely needs GPU acceleration, validate GPU machine, zone, quota, and driver support before moving to a GPU-backed VM. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Server URL, stream key, or activation status | Check that the selected YouTube stream’s URL and key match OBS. If this is your first time streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation. |
| YouTube reports unstable or unhealthy stream input | Bitrate, keyframe interval, or available outbound throughput | Use RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; test a bitrate compatible with measured throughput and consult YouTube’s settings page for your output format. |
| The video stops or does not repeat | Media source playback and OBS process/session | Check the source’s repeat behavior in the installed OBS version and confirm playback continues in the preview. The VM’s uptime alone does not prove that OBS or the source remains active. |
| The stream stops after a VM or network interruption | Recovery and restart design | Determine how your OBS process is restarted and how it reconnects to YouTube, then test that path deliberately. Do not treat YouTube’s archive behavior as a continuity mechanism. |
