For inbound SRT contribution to Wowza Streaming Engine, configure SRT listener mode: the source encoder or publisher calls Wowza’s configured UDP listener port and supplies a publish stream ID. For outbound SRT delivery, the roles reverse: Wowza acts as the caller and connects to the destination. Reliable low latency depends on matching those roles and settings, allowing UDP traffic, and tuning the SRT buffer to the actual network—not simply choosing the smallest latency value.

Check version support and choose the workflow

Wowza’s SRT ingest guide says Streaming Engine 4.7.3 and later supports ingesting MPEG-TS-packaged SRT streams and SRT version 1.5.0 or later. Verify the installed Engine and operating-system versions before configuring a source. Wowza also notes that new Windows installations of Engine 4.8.0 or later may need the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for certain SRT workflows. See Wowza’s SRT ingest guide.

Listener mode for inbound contribution

Wowza recommends listener mode for simpler inbound configuration and more efficient network setup. Configure the listener once in Server.xml, VHost.xml, and Application.xml. It can accept multiple incoming connections on the same configured SRT port, so you do not need a separate .stream file and UDP port for every source.

Legacy MediaCaster for specific multi-track workflows

The legacy MediaCaster workflow can suit more complex scenarios, including multiple alternative tracks. It requires a .stream file and a separate UDP port for each SRT stream, so it involves more per-source configuration and port management than listener mode.

How to set up SRT in Wowza Streaming Engine for inbound video

  1. Create a live application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create or select the live application that will receive the source.
  2. Configure the listener. Set up SRT listener mode in Server.xml, VHost.xml, and Application.xml, following the settings for your Engine version in Wowza’s SRT ingest instructions. Use the listener port configured in VHost.xml. Allow the required UDP traffic through the server firewall and any network firewall or security group between the publisher and Wowza.
  3. Configure the publisher as caller. Enter Wowza’s public IP address or hostname and the configured listener port as the destination. The publisher must send MPEG-TS-packaged SRT video supported by the installed Engine version.
  4. Set the publish stream ID. The stream ID must identify publish mode and the target application, instance, and stream path. Use the default application instance when appropriate. Wowza’s example URI has this shape; replace every placeholder and do not publish a real secret:
    srt://<listener-public-address>:<listener-port>?passphrase=<secret>&pbkeylen=32&mode=caller&streamid=#!::m=publish,r=<application>/<instance>/<stream>

Wowza identifies the host, configured listener port, stream name, application, and stream ID as required parts of its example. The passphrase and key length are optional if encryption is not being used.

  5. Match encryption settings. If using a global passphrase, configure the same passphrase on the publisher. For per-user encryption, use the user identity and credentials configured on the server. Wowza’s example uses pbkeylen=32; its documentation lists 0/default, 16, 24, and 32 byte values. Keep actual passphrases out of public instructions and logs.
  6. Verify ingest and playback. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, check that the source appears as active in Incoming Streams. Then verify playback using an output protocol configured for the application.

How to send an SRT stream from Wowza to another destination

Outbound delivery is a different workflow from inbound ingest. Create or select a Live application and add an SRT Stream Target under Generic Target Destinations. Select the source stream, then configure the destination host, port, and transport options. In this setup, Wowza Streaming Engine is the SRT caller, so the remote endpoint must be ready for that connection.

Wowza documents the SRT Stream Target latency setting for Engine 4.8.5 and later. Its stated minimum is 120 ms; the default is 400 ms when no value is specified. Wowza recommends setting latency to 2.5 times the network round-trip time (RTT). If the peers set different values, the higher value applies to both. For MPEG-TS, Wowza says to use the default 1500 payload size. Check Wowza’s SRT Stream Target documentation for the target configuration.

What SRT latency should you use?

Start with the documented default or Wowza’s RTT-based recommendation for the workflow you are configuring, then adjust in controlled steps using the real source-to-server or server-to-destination route. Do not treat the SRT latency setting as camera-to-screen delay: it describes network transport buffering between SRT peers, not the entire video pipeline.

What the buffer does

SRT uses UDP and timestamp-based delivery buffering so packets can be delivered on a regular schedule. When a packet is missing, ARQ can request retransmission; the buffer needs enough time for the retransmitted packet to arrive before its delivery deadline. A larger buffer can give loss recovery more time but adds transport delay. The negotiated receiver buffering delay is governed by the greater of the local receive-latency and the peer’s latency request, and the buffer must be sufficient for the stream bitrate and delay. See the SRT project’s protocol overview, SRT API socket-option documentation, and SRT latency documentation.

Tune against the route, not a universal number

  1. Measure RTT and observe packet loss and jitter on the actual network path.
  2. Begin with the documented default or RTT-based recommendation rather than an arbitrarily low setting.
  3. Reduce the buffer incrementally while watching for late-packet drops, visible artifacts, and reconnects. Increase it in controlled steps if jitter or loss causes interruptions.
  4. Repeat under realistic network load and across the route the stream will actually use. A setting that works on a quiet local network may not work over a busy internet connection.

End-to-end delay also includes capture, encoding and encoder lookahead, multiplexing, other network and application processing, decoding, player buffering, and display. If the SRT transport setting is low but viewers still see substantial delay, inspect those other stages before lowering the SRT buffer further.

Troubleshoot common SRT problems

  • No connection: Check caller and listener roles, the destination address, the configured SRT UDP port, and firewall or security-group rules. Listener mode reduces per-source port administration; it does not remove the need to permit traffic on its configured port.
  • Connected, but no published stream: Check the stream ID’s publish syntax and the application, instance, and stream path. Confirm that the source is sending the expected MPEG-TS packaging.
  • Encryption handshake fails: Confirm that passphrases and key lengths match, and that both sides are using the intended global or per-user credential setup. Do not expose the passphrase while troubleshooting.
  • Stutter, artifacts, or late drops: Measure RTT, jitter, and packet loss, then increase available SRT latency in controlled steps. Check sender and receiver buffer behavior; no one value suits every network path.
  • Overall delay remains high despite a low SRT setting: Check encoder lookahead and frame buffering, transcoding, the playback protocol, player buffer, decode, and display stages. The SRT latency number does not represent glass-to-glass delay.
  • Outbound target will not connect: Confirm Wowza is configured as caller and check that the destination host, port, latency settings, and remote listener expectations agree.
