To put two cameras, gameplay and a webcam, or other video sources on one YouTube livestream, compose a scene in OBS Studio and send that finished scene to YouTube through an encoder stream. Add each input as its own source, arrange and crop the sources on the canvas, then test the image and audio in YouTube Live Control Room before going public.

This is different from YouTube’s horizontal-and-vertical dual-format feature: split-screen puts multiple panels inside one composition; dual-format sends horizontal and vertical presentations to different viewers.

What you need before you start

You’ll need OBS Studio, a YouTube channel eligible to livestream, and whichever sources you want to show. Sources might be a game capture, a window or display, a webcam, or a capture device. A new camera, microphone, capture card, or paid software is not required if your existing setup already supplies the video and audio you want.

  • YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Use encoder streaming when you need to arrange external video sources and overlays. OBS’s source-composition approach is documented in the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  • Keep your YouTube stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in the broadcast, screenshots, or a public recording.

Set up a split-screen stream in OBS

1. Create the YouTube livestream and get the encoder details

  1. Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live.
  2. In Live Control Room, prepare the stream details and choose the encoder workflow. Open the stream settings that provide the server and stream key.
  3. Copy the stream key securely. Avoid displaying the Live Control Room or key while capturing your screen.

YouTube’s interface labels can change, so follow the current controls shown in Live Control Room if they differ from these names.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Make a scene and add the video sources

  1. In OBS, create a scene for the layout you want to broadcast.
  2. Add one source for each input: for example, a game capture or window capture plus a webcam, or two camera sources. OBS also supports sources such as display captures, images, and text.
  3. Arrange sources in the preview. Drag a source to reposition it; use its bounding box to resize it. To crop a source, hold Alt while dragging one of its edges.
  4. Check the source list order. Sources higher in the list can cover sources below them; move a source up or down when a panel is hidden or layered incorrectly.

3. Choose a layout that stays readable

For two people speaking, make two similarly sized panels and align them to opposite halves of the canvas. For gameplay with a presenter, give the game or captured window most of the canvas and place the webcam in a smaller corner panel. These are layout examples, not requirements; size panels so important game details, faces, and on-screen text remain visible.

  • Check the composition at the output size, not only in the larger OBS preview. Small text and narrow face panels can be difficult to see on phones.
  • Leave enough space around each source that borders or other overlays do not obscure essential content.
  • If you use a camera, frame the person before resizing the source. Crop excess background rather than shrinking the person until they are hard to see.

4. Set video and audio

In OBS video settings, choose a base canvas resolution that gives your sources room, then choose the output resolution and frame rate appropriate to your computer and upload connection. There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every stream: settings depend on the encoder, available upload capacity, and YouTube’s current recommendations. OBS notes that 60 fps can demand more system resources than 30 fps, so test performance before relying on the higher frame rate.

Confirm the intended microphone and other audio devices in OBS. For a two-person conversation, listen to both voices; for gameplay plus commentary, make sure game sound does not overwhelm speech. If you have multiple microphones or capture-device audio, check which sources are active and avoid unintentionally sending duplicate audio.

5. Connect OBS and test privately

  1. In OBS, open stream settings, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or select the server and stream key from Live Control Room.
  2. Start the encoder feed from OBS. Check YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that it receives the expected picture and sound.
  3. Use a private or unlisted test when appropriate. Check framing, audio levels, source visibility, dropped frames, and whether the computer remains responsive before you schedule or start a public broadcast.

6. Start and monitor the broadcast

Confirm the correct event and audience settings in YouTube before starting the public broadcast. During the stream, keep an eye on source visibility, audio balance, dropped frames, and chat. When the program is over, end the broadcast through the current Live Control Room workflow.

Split-screen composition versus YouTube dual-format live

YouTube’s horizontal/vertical option is a separate presentation feature, not a substitute for building a multi-source scene. A split-screen OBS scene can contain several panels in one output; dual-format live provides a horizontal 16:9 presentation and a vertical 9:16 presentation for different viewing contexts.

YouTube says the vertical version is a center crop of the horizontal feed by default. Its available editing-canvas choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. Viewers in the Shorts feed see the vertical format, while other viewers see the horizontal format; both share one live URL and chat. For third-party encoder setup, YouTube says to choose Encoder and RTMP(S), use the second stream key for vertical, and send each format to its matching key. The vertical format cannot be added after streaming has started. See YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance for feature details.

If you plan to use both formats, design and preview the vertical composition before going live. A horizontal split-screen can crop poorly in a vertical frame, especially when two panels sit side by side; check that faces, gameplay action, and any text remain visible in both presentations.

Common problems and fixes

  • A source is missing or covered: Confirm that it is visible in the OBS source list and move it above sources that should appear behind it.
  • A panel is cut off or the framing looks wrong: Reposition and resize it in the preview. Use Alt-drag on an edge to crop, then check the result at the output resolution.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Recheck the selected YouTube service/server and stream key in OBS, and confirm that the encoder feed has started. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
  • The picture arrives but audio is missing or hard to hear: Verify the intended audio devices in OBS and listen to the incoming stream in Live Control Room. Adjust levels so speech and game or program audio are intelligible.
  • The stream stutters or frames drop: Test at a less demanding frame rate or output resolution, and review whether the computer and upload connection can sustain the chosen settings. In particular, 60 fps can require more system resources than 30 fps.
  • The vertical presentation looks badly cropped: Preview the vertical layout before starting. Adjust the editing canvas or build a composition that keeps key content inside the vertical frame; the vertical format cannot be added once streaming has begun.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a live camera or interactive split-screen production, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without leaving a computer on at home, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
