Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →SRS can relay a live encoder feed from an Ubuntu VPS to YouTube Live: publish to an SRS input, then forward from SRS to the URL and stream key shown for your active YouTube broadcast. Use a pinned SRS version and its matching configuration, prefer RTMPS for the YouTube leg when supported, expose only the ports your route needs, and test the full path in Live Control Room before going live. There is no universally best VPS location for every streamer in India; measure routes from your actual source.
What SRS does in a YouTube Live setup
SRS (Simple Realtime Server) is the relay between an upstream publisher—such as OBS or FFmpeg—and YouTube’s ingest service. It does not replace YouTube Live Control Room: you still create or schedule the broadcast there, use its current destination URL and stream key, and monitor YouTube’s preview and stream health. SRS supports RTMP and other media paths; the input and forwarding configuration must match the SRS version you deploy. See the SRS project documentation and SRS RTMP documentation.
The route is: encoder or source → SRS input on the VPS → SRS forwarding connection → YouTube ingest. This is useful when you need a server-side relay or a stable intermediary, but it adds another service and network leg to configure and troubleshoot.
Choose a version and deployment method first
Do not combine commands or configuration copied from different SRS generations. The SRS v4 build guide documents a source-build path on Ubuntu 20, while current project materials describe SRS 8.0 and recommend Docker; the v7 RTMP documentation also shows a Docker route. The v4 Ubuntu recommendation is specific to that guide, not a general statement that Ubuntu 20 is the best or supported image for every release. Check the chosen stable release’s own instructions and use its matching config. The SRS v7 documentation is labeled unstable, and the project’s develop-branch README can change.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Deployment path | What to decide and retain | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Build from source | Pin the release or branch; use that version’s documented Ubuntu image and build prerequisites; keep the configuration file and logs accessible. | Direct control over the build, with responsibility for dependencies and repeatable rebuilds. |
| Docker | Pin an image tag rather than relying on a moving tag; save the matching configuration persistently; map only the ports required by your selected input and management setup. | Reproducible packaging, with responsibility for container configuration, persistence, and updates. |
Before installing, record the Ubuntu release and architecture, SRS release or image tag, configuration file, and intended input/output protocols. The available documentation does not establish a VPS size that is sufficient for every resolution, frame rate, or workload, nor does it provide a provider performance benchmark.
Prepare YouTube credentials and network access
Get the destination from the active broadcast
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that specific stream. YouTube explains that the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and permits YouTube to accept it; treat it like a password. A channel owner or manager can reset a compromised key. See YouTube’s guidance on stream keys.
- Use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room for the SRS-to-YouTube connection if the forwarding client and selected configuration support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection. Its URL and port are obtained separately from the ordinary RTMP destination; follow the values shown for the active stream and YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
Never put a real key in a public tutorial, screenshot, repository, command copied into shared shell history, or log that others can read. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the forwarder.

Open only the required network paths
Your upstream publisher needs inbound access to the SRS input you configured. SRS examples commonly use RTMP port 1935; broader examples may include HTTP or API ports, but that is not a reason to expose every service publicly. The VPS also needs outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest destination for forwarding. Restrict firewall rules to the configured services, limit access to management endpoints, and verify your provider’s firewall as well as the Ubuntu host firewall. Port mappings differ by SRS version and chosen config; use that version’s documentation rather than assuming one universal set.
Configure the source and forwarding route
Keep the configuration aligned with the selected SRS release. SRS examples use an input URL shape such as rtmp://<server>/live/<stream>; the application name and stream path are determined by your configuration, so this example is not a guaranteed endpoint for every deployment.

- Install or start the pinned SRS release using its corresponding source-build or container instructions. Start it with the configuration file that defines the input application and forwarding behavior.
- Configure OBS, FFmpeg, or the chosen publisher to send to the VPS’s reachable SRS endpoint. Enter the app and stream name that match the SRS configuration; ensure DNS, firewall rules, and port mappings permit this inbound publishing connection.
- Configure SRS to forward the incoming stream to the exact YouTube destination URL and current key from Live Control Room. Prefer the RTMPS URL where the forwarding setup supports it. Keep the key out of publicly readable config, logs, shell history, and screenshots.
- Start the publisher and confirm that SRS receives the stream and forwards it. Check the YouTube preview and stream health before selecting Go Live; do not assume that a successful connection to SRS means YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
For version-specific build and service checks, follow the SRS v4 build guide only if you have deliberately selected that v4 workflow. Its commands and Ubuntu 20 guidance should not be mixed with a newer binary or configuration.
Set encoder quality for YouTube
Configure the upstream encoder for the actual resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast, then validate the result in YouTube. YouTube’s encoder settings page recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; for H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a measured VPS bandwidth requirement. Leave room for network overhead and instability, and test the real route. Recheck YouTube’s current encoder settings before broadcasting because recommendations can change.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds where your encoder exposes that setting; do not exceed four seconds.
- Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, not by copying the 1080p30 example to another format.
- Test with movement and audio representative of the real broadcast, then check stream health and any warnings in Live Control Room.
- YouTube says 4K/2160 streams cannot use its low-latency option and are set to normal latency. Do not promise an end-to-end delay based solely on SRS settings: encoding, network routes, YouTube processing, and viewer buffering all contribute.
Which VPS location is best for streaming from India?
There is no established universal winner among Indian cities, providers, or overseas regions. A server geographically close to the creator is not automatically best for the complete route to YouTube. Test candidate locations from the actual source and compare stability, packet loss, round-trip behavior, and YouTube preview or stream-health results. If the encoder itself runs on the VPS, test the relevant ingress and egress paths separately. Also compare provider bandwidth allowances, egress policies, price, and availability before committing; the documentation cited here does not verify a provider, price, or region ranking.
Verify the broadcast and troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fix |
|---|---|
| SRS does not start or behaves differently than expected | Confirm the binary or image tag and configuration belong to the same SRS release. Inspect the process status and logs using that release’s documented method; resolve configuration errors before changing firewall rules. |
| Publisher cannot connect to SRS | Check the public address, configured app and stream path, listener port, VPS firewall, host firewall, and container port mapping. Ensure inbound access is enabled only for the intended input service. |
| SRS receives a stream but YouTube shows no preview | Verify the forwarder targets the URL and key for the active Live Control Room stream, that outbound access works, and that the publisher and forwarder are both running. Allow time for preview, then inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| RTMPS connection or SSL error | Copy the exact RTMPS URL and port displayed in Live Control Room and verify the forwarding client/configuration supports that destination. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance directs users to check the RTMPS URL and port. |
| Key rejected or possibly exposed | Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the SRS forwarding configuration. Keep the replacement private. |
| Playback appears delayed | Separate relay delay from YouTube processing and viewer-player buffering. Test the full route and chosen YouTube latency mode; a historical SRS v3 low-latency example is not evidence of guaranteed end-to-end YouTube latency. |
| Stream health degrades intermittently | Test the actual source-to-VPS and VPS-to-YouTube paths, watch packet loss and stability, and compare candidate VPS routes. Ensure encoder bitrate is appropriate to YouTube’s current settings and the available connection. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube 24/7, rather than relay a camera or live gameplay encoder through your own VPS, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera broadcasting. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
