For the most reliable Xbox One surround setup, connect the console to your AV receiver or soundbar by HDMI, then connect that device to the TV: Xbox HDMI OUT → AVR/soundbar HDMI IN → AVR/soundbar HDMI OUT → TV. For a compatible HDMI system, start with 5.1 uncompressed. If you have an older optical-only system or your TV limits multichannel audio, use Dolby Digital or DTS instead. Atmos is optional and requires a compatible device and connection from end to end.

Check your equipment before connecting it

This guide covers the original Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X. Microsoft’s Xbox One family specifications list HDMI audio and optical S/PDIF for all three models, as well as Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, PCM, and Atmos-related game audio support. The original Xbox One’s HDMI input is for passing video from another device; it is not a replacement for an AV receiver and does not provide surround passthrough for a set-top box. Microsoft’s Xbox One specifications.

  • AV receiver and passive speakers: A flexible option for separate speakers, input switching, and calibration. Confirm the receiver supports the Xbox’s video formats as well as the audio format you want.
  • Surround soundbar: Usually simpler to install; some models include a subwoofer and wireless rear speakers. Surround and height effects depend on the model, placement, and room.
  • Powered speaker system: Check whether it accepts HDMI or optical and which surround formats it decodes. Some systems have fewer inputs and format choices than an AVR.
  • Headphones: These use headphone spatial audio such as Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos for Headphones, or DTS Headphone:X. They do not activate physical room speakers.

Have the Xbox and its power supply, the TV, the audio system, and enough HDMI cables for the chosen route. Use an optical TOSLINK cable only if the audio device needs it. Connect passive speakers to the receiver and power any subwoofer or rear-speaker modules; follow the equipment manuals for placement and wireless pairing.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Turn off the Xbox, TV, and audio device before connecting.
  2. Connect the Xbox HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the receiver or soundbar, such as Game or Media Player.
  3. Connect the audio device’s HDMI OUT to a TV HDMI input. If you also want TV-app audio through the system, use the TV port labeled ARC or eARC.
  4. Select the Xbox-connected input on the AVR or soundbar, then turn on the devices.
  5. Configure the Xbox audio format below. Enable HDMI-CEC only if you want device power or volume control from the TV remote; manufacturers use different names for CEC.

This route lets the audio system receive the Xbox signal directly rather than relying on the TV to pass every format. Dolby recommends connecting source devices directly to an Atmos-capable soundbar when it has an available HDMI input. Check that an older receiver can pass the Xbox’s required video signal; a receiver that handles the audio may still limit 4K, HDR, or high-refresh video. Dolby’s soundbar setup guide.

Alternative when the TV is the HDMI hub: Xbox to TV, then ARC/eARC to audio device

Xbox HDMI OUT → TV HDMI IN
TV HDMI ARC/eARC → AVR or soundbar HDMI ARC/eARC

Use this route if the audio device cannot pass the Xbox’s video format or you want the TV to switch among several sources. The TV must support and be configured to pass the format you choose. In its audio menus, look for options such as Pass-through, Bitstream, or Auto; enable eARC if the TV and audio device support it. Menu names vary. Standard ARC and eARC do not guarantee the same formats on every TV, so consult the TV manual. A TV may pass Dolby Digital but downmix multichannel PCM to stereo, or may not pass Atmos from an external HDMI source. Audio delay can also occur. Dolby notes that Atmos from a device connected to the TV depends on the TV’s ARC/eARC support and suitable bitstream output. Dolby’s connection guidance.

Choose this if your older receiver or soundbar has an optical input but no suitable HDMI audio input. HDMI still carries video to the TV; optical carries audio to the audio device. Optical is useful for compressed Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 and stereo PCM, but not Atmos for home theater or multichannel PCM. Set the Xbox to a compatible compressed format. Microsoft documents optical as an option for older Xbox consoles, and the Xbox One family specifications list optical output. Microsoft’s spatial-sound documentation.

Connect and verify the speakers

For a conventional 5.1 layout, connect front left and right, center, surround left and right, and the subwoofer to the receiver or system as its manual specifies. A 7.1 setup adds rear surrounds; Atmos systems may add height or up-firing speakers. Do not assume that wireless rear speakers are ready as soon as they are plugged in: pair them as directed by the manufacturer.

Run the receiver’s speaker setup or room calibration, if available. Use the device manual for placement, crossover, and level settings rather than relying on a universal distance. First establish that the correct channel reaches each speaker; fine-tune levels and the subwoofer only after that test succeeds.

Set the Xbox audio format

On current documented Xbox menus, open Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Volume & audio output. Older dashboard versions may show Settings → All settings → Display & sound → Audio output; labels can vary by system update. Microsoft says HDMI options depend on the capabilities reported by the directly connected receiver, soundbar, or TV, so a stereo-only endpoint can hide multichannel choices. For compatible HDMI 5.1 or 7.1 systems: uncompressed

Under speaker audio, choose HDMI audio → 5.1 uncompressed for a 5.1 system. This is the recommended starting point when the Xbox is connected directly to an HDMI receiver or soundbar that supports multichannel PCM. For a true 7.1 layout and compatible receiver, choose 7.1 uncompressed. Do not set a 5.1 speaker layout to 7.1 just because the option appears. Uncompressed PCM avoids an additional lossy encoding step, but audible results depend on the source and playback system.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

If 5.1 uncompressed is missing, the Xbox is not detecting a compatible multichannel HDMI endpoint. Check that it is connected to the AVR or soundbar rather than a stereo TV, verify the receiver input and speaker configuration, and inspect the TV/ARC settings if the TV is in the signal path.

For older receivers or limited ARC paths: Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream

Choose HDMI audio → Bitstream out, then set Bitstream format → Dolby Digital. Choose DTS instead only if the receiving device supports it. This is a practical fallback for older receivers, soundbars, or TV passthrough paths that do not accept multichannel PCM. If using optical, use a compatible Dolby Digital or DTS option; do not select Atmos for an optical connection.

For an Atmos home-theater system

Atmos requires an Atmos-capable receiver, soundbar, or TV, a suitable HDMI route, and Atmos content. With the Xbox connected by HDMI, select HDMI audio → Bitstream out → Bitstream format → Dolby Atmos for home theater (wording may include “HDMI only”). The console may prompt you to install Dolby Access. Microsoft describes this setup path in its Xbox TV and audio guidance; the official Dolby Access listing is available from Microsoft Store.

For Xbox-to-TV-to-audio routing, Atmos depends on both the TV and AVR/soundbar supporting the format over the ARC/eARC path. An Atmos-capable system does not make every game, streaming app, or Blu-ray an Atmos source; content and app behavior matter. If an Atmos setting produces missing channels or worse results with ordinary 5.1 material, test Dolby Digital and check the audio device’s compatibility guidance rather than assuming a universal failure. Nakamichi documents one device-specific Xbox audio issue.

For headphones

Under Headset audio, select Windows Sonic for Headphones, Dolby Atmos for Headphones, or DTS Headphone:X when available. Windows Sonic is included with Xbox; Dolby Atmos for Headphones and DTS features may require their respective app or license. The current Dolby Access price is not established here; the $14.99 figure in Xbox’s announcement was historical, from November 13, 2017, not a current price. Xbox’s 2017 spatial-audio announcement. Avoid stacking Xbox spatial processing with a headset’s own surround virtualization or equalization unless its maker recommends that combination; double processing can distort positional cues.

Configure the TV, AVR, or soundbar

  • Receiver/soundbar input: Select the HDMI or optical input used by the Xbox and confirm the correct HDMI input assignment if the AVR has separate assignments.
  • TV audio output: If using ARC/eARC, select the ARC/eARC audio system and set digital output to Pass-through, Bitstream, or Auto as appropriate for that TV.
  • eARC and CEC: Enable eARC where supported. CEC is optional for remote control and power behavior; it is not itself a surround format.
  • Listening mode: Use Auto, Direct, Dolby, DTS, or the manufacturer’s equivalent that accepts the incoming format. A Stereo, Pure Direct, or similar mode may silence or downmix surround channels.
  • Speaker layout: Set the receiver to the speakers actually connected—5.1, 7.1, and any height channels—and run its calibration routine if offered.

Test that surround sound is working

  1. Confirm the AVR or soundbar is on the input connected to the Xbox and is not muted.
  2. Return to Xbox audio settings and check which formats are available; compare them with the signal path and connected device.
  3. Run the Xbox audio test if it is available on your dashboard. Confirm each speaker plays the expected channel.
  4. Start a game with directional audio and listen for front, center, side, rear, and subwoofer activity while moving through the environment.
  5. Check the AVR display, soundbar display, or companion app for the received format, such as PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, or Atmos. The indicator varies by product; consult its manual.
  6. Test a streaming or Blu-ray app separately. A game and a movie app may not use the same format or output behavior.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Only stereo uncompressed is available The Xbox sees a stereo TV or an HDMI/ARC path that does not report multichannel support. Connect Xbox directly to the AVR or soundbar and check again. If that is not possible, try Bitstream out with Dolby Digital.
No sound Wrong input, mute, loose connection, or HDMI handshake problem. Select the connected input, check volume and mute, reseat the cables, then power-cycle the Xbox, TV, and audio device. If needed, test another known-good cable.
No Dolby Atmos option The connected endpoint or signal path does not report Atmos support, or setup is incomplete. Connect directly to an Atmos-capable HDMI receiver/soundbar where possible; otherwise check TV ARC/eARC and pass-through settings. Install Dolby Access if prompted.
Rear speakers are silent The game is not outputting surround, the receiver is in stereo mode, or the Xbox format does not match the connection. Test the speaker channels, select a suitable receiver listening mode, check the Xbox format, and try another surround-capable game.
Video works but audio is stereo or lacks surround The TV is downmixing or the ARC path does not pass the selected format. Use direct HDMI to the AVR/soundbar, or choose Dolby Digital bitstream if the TV path supports it.
Audio is delayed TV, ARC, soundbar, or receiver processing adds latency. Try direct Xbox-to-audio-device HDMI, disable unnecessary processing, or adjust the device’s lip-sync setting.
Some channels disappear with Atmos selected Format handling may be specific to the soundbar, app, or content. Test Dolby Digital for ordinary 5.1 content and check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance.

Best starting point by setup

Your equipment Connection and Xbox setting to try first
HDMI 5.1 AVR Xbox → AVR → TV; 5.1 uncompressed.
HDMI 7.1 AVR Xbox → AVR → TV; 7.1 uncompressed, with the receiver configured for a real 7.1 speaker layout.
Atmos soundbar with HDMI input Xbox → soundbar HDMI IN → TV; use Dolby Atmos for home theater if the soundbar and content support it.
Optical-only soundbar or AVR Xbox HDMI → TV plus Xbox optical → audio device; use Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1.
TV-first setup using ARC/eARC Xbox → TV → ARC/eARC → audio device; use the format the TV passes reliably, with Dolby Digital as a fallback.
Headphones Try Windows Sonic first; compare other headphone spatial options if their app or license is available.

A compliant HDMI cable appropriate to the required video signal is what matters; a premium “gaming” label does not itself improve surround audio. An HDMI audio extractor may solve a difficult receiver/video mismatch, but adds another device that can cause handshake, HDCP, video-format, or latency problems.
