How to Set Up VRR on PS5 and a Compatible TV

Enable VRR from PS5 Video Output, verify your TV’s specific HDMI input, and check the game and connection if the option is missing.

To enable VRR on PS5, connect the console to a TV input that supports HDMI 2.1 VRR, then open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and set VRR to Automatic. Supported games use VRR automatically. You do not need a new cable or TV if your current setup is compatible.

Check that your TV and HDMI input support PS5 VRR

Sony documents PS5 VRR for HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors. The precise TV model and input matter: an HDMI 2.1 label alone does not guarantee that every port supports VRR. Check the TV manual or manufacturer’s specifications for the input you plan to use, and look for any TV-side setting needed to enable its enhanced HDMI signal. Sony’s PS5 4K and 120 Hz troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the correct HDMI 2.1 port and the TV’s settings. Sony also cautions that results vary by TV and game. Sony’s VRR announcement describes the feature for compatible TVs and PC monitors.

VRR, 120 Hz output and ALLM are separate capabilities. Support for one does not establish support for the others. Sony says 120 Hz output depends on both the TV and game supporting 120 Hz, and not all HDMI 2.1 TVs support ALLM. Check the display’s specifications for each feature.

Turn on VRR in PS5 settings

  1. Update the PS5 system software. Sony introduced VRR through a console update; its current support instructions show the setting in the Video Output menu. See Sony’s PS5 VRR support page.
  2. Connect the PS5 to the compatible TV input. Use the port identified by the TV maker as supporting HDMI 2.1 VRR, and enable any required enhanced HDMI setting on the TV.
  3. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The screen includes information about the connected HDMI device and its reported capabilities, including VRR. Sony documents this menu and device information here.
  4. Set VRR to Automatic. With a compatible display, this lets the display’s refresh rate adjust in sync with the PS5’s graphical output.
  5. Launch a game that supports VRR. On a supported display, VRR activates automatically for supported games; no separate per-game console switch is needed. Sony’s announcement explains the automatic behavior.

Should you apply VRR to unsupported games?

The Video Output menu includes Apply to Unsupported Games. It is optional: Sony says enabling it may improve or stabilize results in some games, but behavior can vary by game and TV. If you notice unexpected visuals or other unwanted behavior, turn the option off. This setting does not make an unsupported game natively VRR-compatible. Sony’s VRR support page describes the option and its caveat.

If VRR is missing or does not seem to work

  • Check what the PS5 detects. Return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and inspect the connected HDMI device information. If VRR is not reported, first check the TV connection and input.
  • Use the TV’s VRR-capable input. Consult the exact model’s manual; some televisions support the relevant feature only on specified HDMI inputs or require a setting change. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance advises checking the HDMI 2.1 port and TV settings.
  • Check the TV’s enhanced signal setting and firmware. Enable the input mode needed for HDMI 2.1 features. Updating TV firmware is also sensible when troubleshooting display signaling; Sony specifically mentions current firmware in its 4K 120 Hz guidance, rather than identifying firmware as the cause of every VRR issue. Read that guidance.
  • Temporarily connect the PS5 directly to the TV. A receiver or another device between console and television can affect the signal. Once VRR works in a direct connection, check whether the intermediary supports the needed signal path.
  • Try the cable already included with the PS5. Sony recommends it; a suitable Ultra-High-Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 is an alternative. A cable cannot add VRR support to a TV or input that lacks it. Sony’s cable guidance is here.
  • Confirm the game’s support. VRR is automatic in supported games. You can try Apply to Unsupported Games if you want, but switch it off if behavior becomes unexpected. Sony explains the setting.

VRR, ALLM and 1440p: useful distinctions

On an ALLM-capable TV, PS5 VRR output automatically switches to low-latency mode even if ALLM is set to Off. To disable ALLM completely, Sony says you must also disable VRR. See Sony’s VRR guidance.

If your TV supports 1440p output, PS5 can test SDR and HDR at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, as well as VRR output, when you select 1440p. That test does not guarantee that every resolution and refresh-rate combination will work on every display. Sony’s 1440p support page explains the test options.
