You can play Windows PC VR games wirelessly on an Oculus Quest 2—now branded Meta Quest 2—using Air Link, Steam Link, or Virtual Desktop. For most beginners, start with free Air Link: connect the gaming PC to your router with Ethernet, connect the headset to the same 5 GHz Wi‐Fi network, pair both devices, and launch Quest Link.
Wireless PC VR is local network streaming, not ordinary internet streaming. Your PC renders and encodes the game, sends it over Wi‐Fi, and the headset decodes it. That makes the PC’s Ethernet connection, 5 GHz signal quality, router placement, and interference more important than your broadband download speed.
Choose a wireless PC VR method
| Method | Best for | Cost | Game ecosystem |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Air Link | The official general-purpose option | Free | Meta PC VR and SteamVR |
| Steam Link | Players whose games are mainly on Steam | Free | SteamVR |
| Virtual Desktop | Advanced wireless desktop and PC VR streaming | Paid app | SteamVR and compatible Meta/Rift PC VR games |
Use Air Link first if you want access to the Meta PC VR store and SteamVR without buying another app. Use Steam Link if your library is almost entirely on Steam. Virtual Desktop is a useful paid alternative when you want additional streaming controls or Air Link does not work reliably; its developer notes that not every game is compatible.
Do not confuse PC VR streaming with casting the Quest screen to a television or viewing Windows in a flat virtual monitor. This guide is about rendering VR games on a Windows PC and streaming them to the headset.

Check your PC and network first
You need:
- A Meta Quest 2 headset with current system software.
- A VR-capable Windows gaming PC.
- Current GPU drivers and Windows updates.
- A 5 GHz-capable wireless router.
- The PC connected to the router by Ethernet whenever possible.
- The headset and PC connected to the same local network.
- Enough free storage for PC VR games and the required software.
There is no single current GPU requirement that should be treated as universal for Air Link. Requirements vary by game and can change with software updates. For Steam Link, Valve lists Windows 10 or newer, Steam and SteamVR, an NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, 5 GHz Wi‐Fi for the headset, and a wired PC-to-router connection as its published requirements. See Valve’s Steam Link requirements.
Virtual Desktop lists a VR-ready Windows PC, a GTX 970 baseline, and a wired connection from the computer to a 5 GHz 802.11ac or 802.11ax router. Check the official Virtual Desktop requirements for current compatibility information.

A PC connected by Wi‐Fi while the headset also uses Wi‐Fi can work, but it adds contention and often increases latency or instability. If you can make only one network improvement, wire the PC to the router or to a wired access point near the play area.
Use the router’s 5 GHz SSID rather than 2.4 GHz. Keep the headset in the same room as the router or access point when possible. A separate 5 GHz SSID can help if band steering repeatedly moves the headset to 2.4 GHz. Avoid guest networks, client isolation, and access-point isolation because they can prevent the devices from discovering each other.

Wi‐Fi 6 can help in congested homes, but it is not a guarantee of lower latency. Wi‐Fi 6E and Wi‐Fi 7 are not required for a Quest 2. A newer router will not overcome poor placement, wireless backhaul, interference, or a PC that is already overloaded.

Method 1: Set up Meta Air Link
Air Link is the best first attempt for most Quest 2 owners because it is free and supports Meta PC VR games as well as SteamVR.
Install the PC software
- Download and install the official Meta Quest Link PC app.
- Sign in with the Meta account used by the headset.
- Update the PC’s graphics drivers and Windows.
- Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet.
- Open the Meta Quest Link app and leave it running.
- Open the headset or device settings in the app and enable Air Link if the current version provides a separate toggle.
Meta has changed the name of its Oculus software and periodically changes its menus. You may see labels such as Quest Link, Air Link, or Devices in slightly different locations.
Pair the Quest 2
- Connect the headset to the same home network as the PC, using 5 GHz Wi‐Fi.
- Press the Meta button on a controller to open the universal menu.
- Open Quick Settings.
- Select Quest Link or Air Link.
- Enable Air Link if prompted.
- Select your PC from the available devices.
- Confirm the pairing code shown in the headset and on the PC.
- Choose Launch or Enter Quest Link.
A successful connection opens the Quest Link PC environment. From there you can launch Meta PC VR games. To play Steam games, install Steam and SteamVR on the PC, then start SteamVR from the Quest Link environment or from the computer.
Method 2: Set up Steam Link
Steam Link is the clearest free option when your VR library is primarily on Steam. Valve officially supports Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro.

Prepare the PC
- Install or update Steam.
- Install SteamVR from Steam.
- Sign in to the Steam account containing your games.
- Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet.
- Leave Steam available in the background.
Pair the headset
- Open the Meta Quest Store on the headset.
- Search for and install the official Steam Link app.
- Open Steam Link and select the detected PC.
- Enter the pairing code shown in the headset into Steam on the PC.
- Run the network test if Steam Link offers one.
- Start SteamVR and launch a compatible game.
Steam Link is primarily for SteamVR content. It is not the appropriate route for a PC VR game purchased exclusively through the Meta PC store unless that game is also available through Steam or another compatible launcher. Valve lists Wi‐Fi 6 or Wi‐Fi 6E and an RTX 2070-or-better GPU as recommended improvements, not minimum requirements; see the Steam Link announcement.
Method 3: Set up Virtual Desktop
Virtual Desktop is a paid Quest app that focuses on wireless desktop and PC VR streaming. It is not necessary for a first attempt, but it can be worthwhile if you want more streaming controls or need an alternative to Air Link.

- Install or purchase Virtual Desktop from the Meta Quest Store.
- Install the Virtual Desktop Streamer application on the Windows PC from the official Virtual Desktop site.
- Enter the relevant Meta username in the Streamer application.
- Connect the PC by Ethernet to a 5 GHz 802.11ac or 802.11ax router.
- Open Virtual Desktop on the headset and select the detected PC.
- Use its Games tab or launch SteamVR.
Start with conservative quality settings. Increase resolution or bitrate only after the connection is stable. The official site warns that not all games are compatible.
Improve latency and image quality
- Wire the PC. This is usually more useful than buying a faster internet plan.
- Use 5 GHz Wi‐Fi. Keep the headset close to the router or access point.
- Reduce local congestion. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads, and other heavy traffic while playing.
- Use a dedicated 5 GHz SSID. This can prevent band steering and make troubleshooting easier.
- Check mesh placement. Wireless mesh backhaul and roaming between nodes can add latency or packet loss. Ethernet backhaul is preferable.
- Lower settings before replacing hardware. Reduce render resolution or streaming bitrate if the GPU or encoder is overloaded, then raise quality gradually.
- Watch the PC while playing. Use Task Manager → Performance to check GPU, CPU, Ethernet, and Wi‐Fi activity.
Internet bandwidth is not the main measurement. A fast broadband plan cannot fix a weak local signal, packet loss, or an overloaded wireless channel.

The PC does not appear
- Confirm both devices are on the same non-guest network and the headset is using 5 GHz.
- Restart the headset, router, and Meta Quest Link app.
- Temporarily disable VPN software.
- Check that Windows Firewall allows the Meta Quest Link app and related services on private networks.
- Make sure the PC is not connected through hotel, public, or captive-portal Wi‐Fi.
- Move the headset closer to the access point.
- Disable router client isolation or AP isolation.
- Try a dedicated 5 GHz SSID.
- Remove and re-add the headset in the PC app.
- If available, use a USB Link connection once to confirm that the PC recognizes the headset.
Do not permanently disable Windows Firewall or router security. A temporary diagnostic test should be followed by restoring protection.

The pairing code fails
Restart both the PC app and headset, verify that you are using the correct Meta or Steam account, and remove and re-add the device. An app or headset update may also be required.
The stream stutters or has high latency
The usual causes are a Wi‐Fi-connected PC, weak 5 GHz signal, congested channel, background traffic, GPU overload, or encoding limits. Wire the PC, move the access point closer, close unnecessary applications, and lower render resolution or bitrate. Increase quality only after the stream remains stable.
For a basic local-network check, open Windows Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig
Find the router’s local address, then run:
ping <router-IP-address>
This can reveal obvious local instability, but it is not a complete VR-streaming benchmark and does not measure headset decode time or game-rendering performance.
The screen is black
Update the GPU driver, restart Meta Quest Link and SteamVR, and temporarily disable overlays such as recording or performance-monitoring tools. Confirm that the intended VR runtime is running and test another game or runtime. A black screen can result from a driver, runtime, or application conflict rather than the Wi‐Fi connection.

There is no audio
Check the Windows playback device and the headset’s in-headset audio settings. Restarting the Link or SteamVR session can also restore output routing.
The game opens on the monitor instead of in VR
Start SteamVR before launching the game, confirm that the game supports VR, and check that the intended OpenXR or VR runtime is selected. A normal flat-screen PC game cannot become a VR title simply because it is being streamed to the headset.
The connection drops when you move rooms
5 GHz signals weaken through walls and over distance, and mesh systems may roam between nodes. Move the access point nearer to the play area, use a wired access point, or remain within a strong coverage zone.
When wireless is not the right choice
Use a USB Link connection when the home network is congested, the PC cannot be wired, wireless artifacts remain distracting, or you need maximum consistency for a particular game. Wireless removes the cable from the play area, but it does not remove network and encoding overhead.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore buying a premium router, try the existing setup with the PC on Ethernet and the headset on a clean 5 GHz network. If the signal is still weak, a properly wired Wi‐Fi 6 access point near the play area is often a more targeted upgrade than a top-end Wi‐Fi 6E or Wi‐Fi 7 router. Buying a Virtual Desktop license is another option when its controls and workflow are worth the cost, but it is not required for Air Link or Steam Link.
Air Link vs. Steam Link vs. Virtual Desktop
| Choose | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| Air Link | You want Meta’s official free option, own Meta PC VR games, or need access to both Meta PC VR and SteamVR. |
| Steam Link | Your library is mainly on Steam and you want direct SteamVR integration without buying another app. |
| Virtual Desktop | You want additional desktop and streaming controls, or Air Link remains unreliable on your network. |
No method is universally fastest or best. Results depend on the router, game, GPU encoder, software versions, interference, distance, and whether the PC is wired.
