To set up Xbox Cloud Gaming, open the Xbox app on a supported TV or visit xbox.com/play in a supported browser on a PC or phone. Sign in, choose a game available for cloud play, and connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB unless that game supports touch controls. Most cloud games require an eligible Game Pass plan; select free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in a supported region.
Check what you need before you start
- A supported device and region: Xbox Cloud Gaming availability depends on device, model, and location. Confirm your exact TV or streaming-device model on Xbox’s TV compatibility page before buying hardware.
- Game access: Most cloud console games require an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential subscription and a game supported for cloud play. Select free-to-play games are available with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
- A controller or supported alternative: A compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB is the usual setup. Some games provide Xbox touch controls.
- A reliable internet connection: Xbox states 10 Mbps download as the minimum, recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Its detailed guidance specifies 10 Mbps for mobile devices and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets. These are Xbox’s guidelines, not a guarantee of smooth play; performance also depends on your connection, location, and device.
For browser play, Xbox lists Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari as supported browser examples. Its cloud gaming page has the current requirements and availability information: Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on a TV
- Confirm compatibility. Xbox lists select LG TVs running webOS 24 or later, select Samsung TVs from 2020 onward, select VIDAA OS devices on VIDAA OS 9.6 or later, and specific Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube models. Support varies by model and market; check the current supported TV and Fire TV list.
- Open the Xbox app. On a supported TV or Fire TV device, find and launch the Xbox app.
- Connect a compatible controller. Pair it with the TV or streaming device over Bluetooth, or connect it by USB if supported.
- Sign in and choose a game. Follow the app prompts to sign in, then select a title available for cloud play. Most games in the TV app require an eligible Game Pass subscription.
If your TV is not supported, a supported Fire TV device may be an alternative, but check the precise model against Xbox’s current list first. An app being available on one model does not establish compatibility with every TV or device in the same product family.
Play Xbox Cloud Gaming on a PC
- Open Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or another browser listed by Xbox as supported.
- Go to xbox.com/play and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Choose a game marked as available for cloud play.
- Connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB, unless the game supports another control method.
Xbox also offers cloud streaming for select games you own. To look for eligible titles, sign in at xbox.com/play and check for “Stream your own game.” Xbox Wire described this browser route on November 20, 2024, but ownership alone does not mean every game can be streamed; the eligible catalog can change. See Xbox Wire’s explanation of Stream Your Own Game.

Choose the setup route that fits your devices
| Route | What you need | Controls | Key check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supported TV app | A supported TV model or listed Fire TV device, internet access, and usually an eligible Game Pass plan | Compatible controller; touch controls depend on the game | Verify the exact TV or Fire TV model and market availability |
| PC browser | A PC, supported browser, Microsoft account, and game access | Compatible controller is the usual option | Use xbox.com/play and confirm the game supports cloud play |
| Phone or tablet browser | A supported mobile device, browser, Microsoft account, and game access | Bluetooth controller or touch controls for supported games | Check OS version and current regional/device availability |
Fix common setup problems
- The Xbox app is missing from your TV: Check the exact model, operating system version, and market against Xbox’s supported-device information. TV support is selective, not universal.
- A game does not appear or will not launch: Confirm that it is currently cloud-playable in your region and included in your access route, such as the required Game Pass plan or the select free-to-play offer. Catalog and feature availability can change.
- The controller does not connect: Pair it in the TV, PC, or phone’s Bluetooth settings, or try USB if both the device and controller support it. Compatibility can differ across devices. If the game supports touch controls, those may provide an alternative.
- Streaming is unstable or looks poor: Check that your download speed meets Xbox’s guidance, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi if available, and consider whether other network traffic or your location is affecting the connection. Meeting a speed guideline does not guarantee a particular result.
Know the limits of cloud play
Xbox says “Game titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, XBOX Game Pass plan, and platform.” Streamed games may also have limitations involving resolution, audio outputs, cloud-save storage, companion-app support, or accessories and peripherals. Check the current game and service details before subscribing or purchasing hardware.
